Thanks Nathan for video and the book tip.....Yes i have a problem getting things done....l was just-hu thanking may be beacause i am in my 80's lol....Congrats on the new machine my friend....
Old F-4 2 Shoe🇺🇸
Thanks for the tip. I've downloaded an audio version from Amazon.
As an Air Force veteran from Tennessee, I often displayed the flag of my home state. I was told several times to take it down. I would always reply, "As soon as they take it down at the wing headquarters." They had all the state flags flying there and no one ever noticed the TN state flag until they saw it at my house.
Have you ever noticed that a lot of these “woke culture” folks seem to be asleep at the wheel?
All flags for southern states are racist don’t ya know, if only democrats that whine about racism understood who invented the democrat party. 😂😂
Always hand tighten. I am 64 years old. Working as a mechanic. Always hand tighten!
Right on
The other thing I do (as well as lubing the gasket, which I saw you do) is fill the filter as much as possible with fresh oil before installation - that way the engine is less starved of oil on initial startup... not always possible, especially on filters not equipped with a non-return valve that are mounted at 90 degrees...
Having a gas station for 23 years and doing countless oil chances always tighten with both hands, never a wrench (too tight and you could pinch that gasket.
It’s a shame that some people look for things that offend them 🥺🥺they must be so miserable
Filters used on hydraulic lines are usually torqued to specification rather than hand tightened. The reason for that is that hydraulic lines usually operate at much higher pressures than engines. When it comes to engines hand tight works well. Any tighter and you may have to destroy the filter to get it off.
In all the oil filters I have changed in the past 50 years, instruction on the filter box always say, "tighten by hand," I've never had a problem in the past half century,
The other thing I do is to put oil in the filter before installation. That way oil flow starts immediately, and the engine does not have to fill the filter before oil flows.
Follow the directions on the filter. Usually one half to three quarters of a turn after the filter contacts the base. Hand tight is plenty unless you can't get to it good but never exceed what's on the filter directions. ALWAYS check that the seal from the old filter isn't stuck on the engine base before you put new one on. Happens a lot.
Sawing with Sandy is a fantastic channel. He's a Canadian gem.
I always torque my filters. I use German torque specs, “goodintite”.
You're funny !!😅
That swing allows you to get closer to a wall or ditch without going in it!
Your mother in law keeps breaking the heater so she can see you LOL

Your State Flag is Beautiful.
I would have made the same mistake but actually never seen it in your prior Videos.
Love United America
Love your Channel
👍
Good idea on moving the control pattern to "Universal" or "Cat". I find it much more natural. Always enjoy your videos, best.
Cool little shout out to Sandy! I knew you guys all know each other!
Good Morning Nathan,
I must compliment you on your equipment maintenance !! You are like Mike Morgan (OWTM) who is also pretty fastidious in keeping his equipment clean and well maintained !! And that's why both your pieces of equipment look so good in your respective videos !!
Love it !! Your "toys" will certainly last a lot longer !!
Good morning!
As a retired mechanic 2 rules. Never reinstall the drain plug without the wrench in the other hand. Put the oil fill cap in the hood/compartment latch until you refill. This can help avoid major mistakes
Professional mechanic here Nathan, regarding spin on filters just hand tighten only. Also, you have a pusher fan blade which means you should blow out the radiator from the engine side if at all possible. watch your video and when you start the engine it blows the dust out the back. Love watching your videos!
You probably saw your boom swivel on outdoors with the Morgan’s. . Thanks for sharing
I really like your new excavator Nathan. And I love that quarter sawn oak. Cool video. 👍❤️
I am an Automotive Technician and we only put filters on hand tight.
Reading is the key to knowledge and happiness!
Everybody has their own ways of doing things, but as far as oil filters go, hand tightening then a 1/4 turn is what we have always done with no issues, of course oil your seal before replacing
1/4 turn past hand tight on oil filters is what I was taught. Never had a problem
I strongly advocate reading the owner's manual in its entirety. You never know what else you might find to surprise and delight you.
You are 10,000% Right on the Money! For Mr.Nathan ,NOT to "Know" about the "Side Swing" Ability, is Realy Silly....PLUS; when He disconnected the "Quick-Release" on the Bucket that was suspended FOUR FEET in the AIR, was TOTALLY a "NO-NO". Thoroughly Reading & Understanding the Operator's Manuals before the "key gets turrned" is ABSOLUTE PARAMOUNT! He is a Very Nice-Guy,& We want him to STAY Happy& Healthy.
@NSResponder - yes indeed, RTFM. 😊
3/4 turn after gasket contacts . A good rule of thumb is as tight as you can get it hand tight .
Most come off hard the first time because they were put on dry . Always lube the gasket with oil .
I have been a technician for 30 years .
you got it😄
I was taught to hand tighten the filter then 1/4 turn with a filter wrench. Hope that helps
Nathan, the filters on a new engine are generally installed before the engine is painted and from my experience, its the paint that makes new filters hard to get off. Usually as marked on filters, a quarter turn past contact is all you need.
That KATO really seems to have incorporated a lot of updated features in this machine. Looking forward to seeing more updates
Offset boom you will absolutely love it!
Grew up in a family of mechanics and I was taught to tighten the oil filter up until the gasket makes contact and turn it with both hands and quarter turn more. Never use a tool to install the filter you will overtighten it. If you ever have to remove one that was tightened too much you will learn why. I spent a day removing a filter off a friends car with a punch and hammer once.
Hand tighten filters. If the gasket is compressed too much and is collapsed so that there is metal to metal contact it is likely to come loose. Cat dealership mechanic, 20 years a mine maintenance lead, and 15 years a logging equipment mechanic. Simply oil the gasket and follow the directions on the outside of the filter. The only exception is canister filters which have separate filters and a gasket that is tightened with a central bolt or a threaded outer housing.
Its simple, if there is no oil seeping out around the oil filter seal, then the filter is on tight enough.
I have always appreciated you Nathan since 2018. Thank you for all you do!
Thanks for saying that. Made my day
I'm really impressed with the kato equipment, seem to have a lot of good features and built very well. Just really nice equipment.
Not knowing if I am interested in the book selection or not, but I am glad that there are people that are still reading.
No problem with the flag.
As an owner operator it looked to me like you changed it from SAE - John Deere - Backhoe (US) mode into ISO - Cat - Excavator (normal) mode.
Came to say the same. Right hand up and down is excavator pattern. Left is backhoe pattern. Run my mini in backhoe and my 200 in excavator. Took me a while to get proficient in excavator pattern but ran backhoe more when learning how to operate in my younger years. 👍🏼
@@AllstarVentures Yep, I think a lot of home operators probably drive a backhoe before they use an excavator and thus prefer what's familiar. But for the likes of me that have never used a backhoe, I only know excavator mode.
Always hand tighten really snug. They come off hard because the rubber gasket gets dry and is hard to turn. Hope that helps.
I just finished listening to The War of Art on Audible. I can see why you return to this book regularly. I will be purchasing the hard copy as well. Thanks so much for your recommendation. Outstanding!
The proper torque for filters is based on how tight they should be so you dont have too worry about them falling off !! 😅 it's all just common sense guys !!
I agree with you Nathan, I like to give the oil filters a snug with a wrench. I am no pro mechanic, just a guy that has been in business my whole life. Ive never had a leaky filter.
I like your new format. You can only cut so much lumber right? I really like your work around the property. Keep up the good work.
Thanks 👍
Your dad’s truck is in awesome shape looks really good.
Thanks 👍
I work on equipment. Hand tighten and a tug is perfect. The higher the pressure the tighter the filter should be. Diesel and hydraulic systems need to be pretty tight. Regular automotive is just hand tight.
I believe you are selecting between Caterpillar controls vs John Deere controls. Have you decided on a name for the mini excavator?
for the filters I would talk to the local equipment dealer for their info ,as for using compressed air on the rad be careful you can blow the cooling fins off and cause leaks I have seen this happen
Hey Nathan! Great video and glad to hear you like the slab rack. It sure has been a great addition for me. Thanks for taking us all along on your videos. I really enjoy them!
Thanks again!
The new Kato is a nice addition to your operation 😊
I think so too!
Sawing with Sandy is in central Ontario.
Thanks for the tip on the book, I'll have to check it out.
I'm team "Filter Wrench" myself...and like you, I tighten the filter with a filter wrench just a tick. Another great video. Thanks for sharing.
New engines and equipment have their filters and plugs installed with a drying lube so they do not attract dust in transport and storage. Filters should be installed hand tight, however if your grip or strength are weak use help to put a slight compression on the gasket. Over tightening can damage the gasket, filter threads, or even the engine threads.
Thanks for sharing with us Nathan, glad you got your things all back at the house. Get them back together and working properly and give thanks and get on with everything. Have fun with the new equipment and get it set up to fit your needs and wants. Stay safe and keep up the great work. Fred.
Thank you for the book recommendation...ordered it
Glad you got your computers sorted out ... and now have a spare. Having done few oil changes, filter gets hand tightened only, and they are still a bi-ch to remove by hand. Best wishes to you and the family.
I really appreciate book recommendations. You do so much on the farm that I have to think that there be some books that you refer to or that helped you learn about getting things done.
Another great video, Nathan!👍🏻
on ALL the spin on filters I've replaced, the maintenance guides I've followed said the hand tighten till the gasket snugs up and turn another 1/4 turn beyond that...probably the factory filters are all overtightened, because on the assembly line everyone is using pneumatic impact guns, so they get slammed on...
Amazing how people have a criticism and in this case an ACCUSATION that can defame someone without a clue about the facts.
GREAT VIDEO, THANKS!!
I saw that video where Sandy (Sawing With Sandy) made those divider racks and it looks like it saves him a lot of time. I am glad that you are going to do that too Nathan.
Book recommendations are great 😊
Thanks again for sharing with us
No problem 👍
Always hand tight, too tight you can pinch gasket.
Great content Nathan keep it up along with your flag! Proud to be an American!
I just downloaded the book on Audible and will give it a listen over the next few days. I am always looking for good books so recommend away. I love history and self help stuff so it fits right in however I will listen to most things from people I trust when recommended. Thanks Nathan!
I really like your videos, thanks for sharing your experiences on your farm.
Thanks for watching!
Looks like Dad is walking around like me but still has a good touch on the controls. Nice machine and good luck with it.
Thanks 👍
Hand tighten your filter and then use a oil filter wrench and give it a half more turn and always make sure to put oil on the rubber seal before tightening your filter.
I use to do it for a living
Years ago on the filter on the side of it was printed 3/4 turn after o_ring made contact . I would tight 1/2 turn to seat o rig then loosen them do the 3/4 turn
The Tennessee State flag consists of a field of crimson edged with a band of blue. It has 3 white stars in a circle of blue outlined with white. The stars represent the Three Grand Divisions of the State - East, Middle, and West. It was adopeted in the early 1900's after being designed by an East Tn attorney who was serving in the National Guard.
Also, I noticed that you are putting a lot of torque on the oil drain plug. These will vary slightly by manufacturer, but what I have generally seen is that they be installed with a NEW copper washer and tightened to no more than 25 ft-lbs. If the drain plug is leaking, it is usually because the drain plug gasket (the copper washer) is bad. Copper gets work hardened and will not seal properly if used more than once.
CATERPILLAR has the spec printed on the oil filters they brand. Most of them are like after the seal makes contact, then turn 3/4 of a turn.
Having found that new boom swing control, bear in mind... you have also found at least 2 more grease points...😂👍🇦🇺
Nathan, the radiator, on Mr Kato, should be cleaned
with a strong stream of water. Your air line was not doing the job.
Probably best to hit it with an environmentally friendly cleaner
first and let it set a few minutes, before the water. 😁✌🖖
That's the IDEAL way - which is always BEST !!
I always use a wrench same manner as you do and the reason for me is to prevent vibration loosening which could end poorly if I am out of the machine for warm up when filter came loose but in any case will make a mess. Ray
Great video!
Thanks!
Steven Pressfield is an awesome writer. I loved his historical books on ancient Greece. Gates of Fire and Tides of War are outstanding reads!
Looks like an interesting book on 'getting unstuck' in our creative work. One book I read ages ago that was helpful though it may not be in print anymore) was "A Whack on the Side of the Head"
Nathan always a pleasure watching your videos and the work you do 😮😊❤
I appreciate that!
I agree with you Nathan hand tight and then a snug twist with a wrench.
I’ve changed my own oil for lots of different vehicles over the years, always by hand & never leaked, BUT, there have been times I couldn’t hardly get the old filter off…like it tightened itself!
If you ever have trouble with Aux quick disconnects a lot of equipment have a feature to relieve pressure. I know this works for a lot of them and some even have a switch to do it, if you turn the machine on and not start it on your mini take your safety leveler and engage like you were going to dig. Function your Aux switch back and fourth and it should make it easier to pull the couplings. And as an equipment mechanic for little over 30 years, oil filters get a good hand tightening, suction fuel hand tight, pressure fuel filters snug with wrench, Hyd little more then a good snug with a wrench.
Love the "rays"
Hand tight plus a 1/4 turn
Always was told to hand tighten. From experience there are some diesel engines that you have to drill/punch a hole in the filter to get them to come off lol.
The War of Art is excellent! And the Resistence is ever present!
True
I've always snugged the filter up by hand, and then go 1/4 turn with a filter wrench. That's the way Dad taught me.
That opening view of the lake and mountains is absolutely beautiful.
We agree!
I've been changing oil for almost 50 years now and I only hand tighten oil filters. I was taught that in the 70's by a couple of experienced mechanics.
I've always heard hand tight which is about 12 foot pounds of torque and then another 1/4 turn extra turn.
What I have always been told, and always done myself, is to thread on the filter until the gasget just touches the filter mount and then tighten the filter BY HAND 1/3 to 1/2 turn. The gasket on a spin-on filter actually swells slightly when oil hits it and if you have used a wrench to tighten the oil filter, it can be a real bear to get off. As far as hydraulic oil filters are concerned, I would check with the manchine manufacturer. These systems operrate at much higher pressure than the engine oiling system so they may have a different gasket and/or need to be tightened differently.
Hopefully a little helpful hint, always use a new crush washer on the oil drain plug.
And never over tighten, or you will eventually strip the threads.
You talk about slab firewood, back in the hills there was a set up and the old fellow running the mil, give him 50 buck and haul a dang near a truck load of good wood for kindling and daytime fire.
I used to work for Sears, Laundry Products. The old hands always agreed that, to avoid call-backs, hand tight plus a half turn extra, to be sure. However, for MY appliances and rubber isolated devices, finger-tight alone because I'll be right there if, due to hot-cold cycles, I can tighten things a little. As for the manufacturer, they never wqnt to see you again! LOL
You should keep that lever a secret from your dad then switch it every night and record it for us!
That is so evil! 😆😆😆
That is hilarious ! It would make a funny Video but Nathan's Dad could get hurt which is not funny.
John
I'm with you on the oil filter. Hand tight and then another 1/8 of a turn or so with the wrench. It's all about not having leaks but why stress the threads if you don't need to. 50 years of doing this hasn't failed me.
I always hand tighten my oil filters.
I started out in life as a mechanic, I was taught tighten 'til snug then 1/3 turn more
I have raced cars for 25 years and change filters on a frequent basis. Always very hand tight, when it’s time to remove them I need a wrench. Also if I can’t find original use only Wix or Napa that are Wix.
Worked as a heavy duty mechanic for years, have had my share of oil filters being too tight. My rule of thumb for any filter is: turn filter until it makes contact and turn 3/4 more. Never had a filter come loose or had trouble getting the filters I installl off.
