    The 1980s were an... interesting time for road bicycle racing. Can you imagine today that you are riding a Tour de France with downtube shifters, 2x8 gears, toe clips, and tires that you are supposed to stick on.
    If you are looking for Gazelle kit, just pop over to the Netherlands, you will find a lot of Gazelle and Batavus frame sets just dumped in the scrap. Gazelle didn't have a huge market outside of the Benelux.

      Well I do my club ride on the flats (I'm 49yo) with my Saronni red Colnago Super with a 13-18 block and MAVIC open SUP clinchers. Off the back drafting and using almost always my 13 cog keeps me young.

    Beautiful bike - I'm reminded of my Raleigh Team 753 (1989), which was outfitted with DuraAce groupset and Mavic wheels of similar vintage. Gave that bike to my grandson about 7 years ago, as my road bike riding days are mostly history. Seeing this bike being restored and ridden brought back fond memories of the Raleigh.

  • @demonstructie
    @demonstructie Před 2 lety +4

    That is lush. Lovely frame that thoroughly deserved the effort (and money!!) you put in.
    Love me a Champion Mondial, I found my first one in a skip believe it or not, some 15 years ago. It's not as nice as yours mind, just an AB frame from the '70s. I built it up as a fixie and it served as my daily bike for a good while, commute, errands, the pub - a loyal companion during my 'wild years'. But other bikes took over and it was kind of just sat there, dismantled and slowly accumulating cobwebs and surface rust. Until I decided that it deserves better, so I fixed it up (more or less period correct) and did Eroica on it.
    I've since got a 'modern' Champion Mondial, a '90s model, one of the very last steel road bikes Gazelle made. In the colour scheme I always lusted after, red with white lettering. I intend to build it up with a modern groupset and it should be _really_ close to the one bike I've always dreamed of.

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  Před 2 lety +1

      It’s always a bonus finding one in a skip….and for me you really are saving it from becoming scrap. Nice one, and great to hear your creating a resto mod with one, best of both worlds should make a great build. Good on you! Thanks for your support it’s much appreciated

    I went to a customers house yesterday and got into a chat about cycling, chap showed me his modern road bikes and hanging up in the garage was his all original Raleigh Corsa 501 (lovely gold arrow groupset) that he bought new in 1985/6. Chatting about my own love for vintage road bikes and he said he had no intention of ever using it again and would I be interested at a very reasonable price! safe to say I’ll be collecting a Raleigh Corsa in the next few weeks.

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  Před 2 lety

    Very nice build, love it. I did use a velox branded tubular tape on my latest Frejus build, worked so good that I’m probably never gonna use the normal glue again, it is truly the hassle free option. No mess, and you can center the tubular perfect. I use veloflex tubulars, they are the best in my opinnion.

    Brilliant restoration - The color scheme: phenominal - lug work: Apex. What a treat to look at. Noticed that you chose the right side brake lever to control the front brake. The cable L👀ks to have more of a bend in it - is cable friction affected this setup? The wheel base and tight geometry demands being on the drops more to get better control / feel - do you concur? The acceleration when you stood up looked instantaneous. I'd say this bike fits you the very best of all that you've ridden thus far. Thanks again for the show & tell :)

    Congratulations on the restoration and data on the history of the Gazelle, really impressive. This model specifically looks very nice, either because of the new graphics used on the frame or the excellent Shimano Dura-Ace 7400 group. A vintage bike to enjoy classic and memorable rides. I own and ride a champion mondial but it’s my climbing bike. No need to restore when can ride with modern groups. These steel frames handle beautifully especially for folks who are so used to carbon. We don’t need to wind the clock back on them to appreciate their panache. They still hammer even now.

    You do a great job on refurbishing these bikes to their original beauty. But from a practical stand the gearing back then was way to high for me and probably most riders. Modern compact chain sets make riding over mixed terrain much easier than the old days.

    Cool as a Dutch i am restoring a Gazelle Olympia vintage around 1980 at the moment , blue markings going to look awesome again a fixie though with some 2022 features. But i have to many bikes haha and not enough space so i have to get rid of my Batavus Adagio Nuvinci city bike.Batavus another Dutch brand , that bike is a tank never had any trouble or major repairs biking since 2008 on it 1 flat tire that's it most impressive but super slow !! For daily use i restored a Trek FX7200 (Joe Biden has one) , and for the summer days riding a Nirve Cruiser.But maybe the Gazelle is going to be "weapon of chioce" Greetings from the Netherlands ! Hell Year !!! a new video from what I think is the best restoration channel on youtube. I love gazelles for me one of the best bases for a restoration or custom bikes. The frames are still affordable and leave enough budget for the restoration. My last restoration was also a Champion Mondial for my friend Kim from Munich. Champagne Rose as the paint color and of course Campa as a group. I am very happy about the new video and will now enjoy it in peace, keep it up. It can take an 11 speed block and i plan to build it with Shimano 105. I am on a budget unfortunately but its a steel beauty and a piece of classic cycling history. @@BikeItUK Well its a present to myself at 53. I an old timer with memories of my race days on Columbus steel which i will never forget. And yr so right when you say that steel is good for the planet. The damn stuff will out live me. Had a great conversation with Barbara Tomassini on the phone and she told me spray oil into the tubes every so often and your bike frame will last for ever. Carbon is probably one of the worst things for the environment and very hypocritical of the bike history. Its all a load of bollacks from these green freaks. Pardon my French 😉
