Tried canning my excess tomatoes for the first time in my 70 years. I was inspired to try it when I found my dad's canning supplies when sorting out his house after his passing. Because I watched enough of your video's, I felt somewhat confident to give it a try. I will be expanding what I do next year. I am proud of myself, and I feel my very practical dad smiling down on me.

I’m very, very sorry for your loss Stephanie 💔 but I’m also very proud of you!!
I’m 53, I canned foods with my gran when I was a child and a teen
. But never on my own
I was always to afraid to try pressure canning
.
2 years ago, after the start of the pandemic
I taught myself pressure canning, water bath canning
. All the things canning!! There has been no stopping me!! Now, I’ve put up all our garden this year and many other things that I purchased at our local farmers market!
I’d like to think that my gramma is proud of me too! I know if she were here, she’d be right there in the kitchen with me!! I’m sure your daddy would be too!!
      Happy canning to you!! â€ïžđŸ’•đŸ™đŸŒ

Note for Storing Jars; always store clean jars with the rings on. Chips in the edges of the jar will prevent sealing. Rings prevent chips and minimize additional storage as well as ease of use.

You've probably got a million other people saying the same thing, but I think those who go to the grocery store two or three times a week (or even once a week) have no concept of what that food would look like should they put it all on a shelf for use over the year instead of purchasing it over that year in small chunks. It's a HUGE amount of food. And it's normal. This is how much food it takes to feed people, even only two people. People think it looks like "too much" because we've normalized the small grocery trips rather than putting up and preserving our own. You're such an inspiration to me and you have been for a very long time! I personally NEVER get tired of the pantry tours because you do actually give new info each time. You say, "This didn't work, this worked. We didn't like this recipe. We tried this new recipe and we really love it." You're the reason we can cowboy candy now, so I'll love you forever for that! But do whatever you want to do. Just wanted to give you hopefully an encouraging word that your content is always worthwhile. Even if you feel like it's not new, it's more new than you might think. đŸ„°

I’ve seen a couple of your freeze dried videos and I appreciated that you tell us honestly if you would or wouldn’t freeze dry that item again. But I would LOVE LOVE to see a video of the good, the bad and the ugly that you have learned so far with that method of preserving. I’m contemplating getting a freeze dryer and would love to hear some of your favorite ways to use it ❀

My grandma would of loved to teach me but her hands were medically unable but she supplied me with every jar she collected until she passed in 2018. So lovely to look at! Hubby and I have been rethinking whether or not we need to garden next year. My canning was piled on the floors, wall ledges and on HIS wood piles down in the basement. He was lamenting he had nowhere to put our winter wood, so he brought in this giant industrial cabinet. I got to work trying to organize the stuff that was in his way and filled that cabinet right up! so much food for just the two of us (and like you, when the kids come to visit they take home their favorites) Really, I think we can skip the garden on most things and just eat what we have, but I LOVE preserving food. I get so much satisfaction in saving and being frugal. Love your channel! Think I watch EVERY video you put out :)

Potatoes;as of today, potatoes are 8.99 in Mid-Michigan. I bought 20# to can. It's crazy the prices in the stores. I gardened too and went to the produce stand. My pantry is 85% homegrown canned meals. Hubby got 2 deer and what we have my 2 freezers are almost full. Bought freeze dried (long term) fruits and basic staples, dehydrated, ect. With the prices going way up, we have to live out of our pantry for at least a year or more. Occasional trip for random items but no big shopping hauls. Proud of all my hard work. I feel like my husband bought me a new presure canner 7 yes ago still haven't got the courage yet to use it but told my self this is the year I need to start practicing

    • @diannamc367
      @diannamc367 Pƙed rokem +1

Start practicing with the canner with just jars of water to learn how your canner works and how it works with your stove (where the sweet spot is to keep your pressure stable).
You can do it without lids so no waste there. Unless you want to can water itself, there is some value in that if you need water storage and therefore still no waste.
Do it as many times as you need to to build confidence.😊

I'm going to say about 1200 jars! It's such a wonderful feeling knowing you can feed your family from the work of your hands. We dearly miss our 10 Acre Woods and the bounty the garden produced. We'd plant a minimum of 75 hills of potatoes alone lol. The kids and grandkiddos miss it too lol.

    I enjoy pantry reveals.
You sound like you're coming down with or recovering from something. Hope you feel better.
I am getting ready to move to my retirement farm. The room for the pantry isn't that big so I will have shelves around the outside and then rollable shelves that can fit in the space. All shelves will be earthquake proof and everything alphabetized by product family.
The outer walls will all be long term storage including gallon cans, jars, buckets and things like potatoes, onions, etc. The movable shelves will be canned goods.
All beans will be in one area and then divided by subgroup such as beans - black, beans - green, beans-green/corn mix, beans-green/tomato mix, beans pinto.
Things like cowboy candy would peppers-hot/cowboy.
By being a stickler and doing it that way I will always know which shelving unit to pull out instead of one time putting sweet pickles in one area, dill pickles in another and sometime accidentally putting both under just pickles.

Very impressive and so much work! It will be really interesting to see what is in the pantry at the beginning of the '24 garden season. As for organizing the shelves, I would suggest that you assign a number to each type of item and have a list of the numbers with what each represents posted on the front of the pantry. All you deal with posting on the shelves is a number and a glance at the list can quickly direct you to the location of that item. You don't have to worry about alphabetical order or any order really..apples can be number 1 or number 30..it doesn't take that much time to locate the word "apple" on a list of items. It works for me for organizing other household materials.

Rachel- Thank you so very much. Do not get tired of watching you and your tours. It helps bring a visual and wrap up perspective on all we have viewed. You and several others have helped spark my canning and food preservation. I love watching you and Todd with your meals. AND I have tried several of your recipes. One of the most recent was your ketchup. Love it. Even more than store bought. I have not bridged into pressure canning however seeing you do it helps me to at least consider it. Encouraging to hear - and I know it sounds strange- about the mice thing. Had them the first time this year. Thanks for the tip.
As for your jars? I guess 1030 between your shelves and that may be low. Thanks for your perseverance. I look forward to seeing what you do with your canned and preserved food over the next several years. BLESSINGS!

We did the same thing we had an extra room in the basement that has turned into storage for foods & canning supplies, we built shelves & have filled them big time, started canning meats. Plus the mock pineapple, mock apples & cabbages, most of the recipes came from you & we like everything, my significant is just learning to eat differently. My snow bird friends like beets & tomitillos so I grew them but they didn't want them, just a little bit so I benefited w/ salsa Verde & pickled beets that I love anyway.
Want to thank you for doing your channel, I've learned so much from Todd & yourself. I'm gonna be getting chickens but just a few for eggs.

I'm trying to tell how many jars back they go. I'm figuring 12 rows and being able to go 9 back and then you have the other things in the middle. I'm going to guess at least 2000. I know the feel of accomplishment that I have as I look at what I have put up from the garden, things I have canned from the store - like meat because I don't raise animals. I look at the things I've bought at the store when I've found them on sale. It's such a good feeling to have my adult son rather have a meal that I've fix that getting something out at a restaurant. I'm continuing to learn the different ways to use the foods, and your dinner videos do help that because there are times I've watched, and it hits me...I can do "this" with what I have.

We use our pantry foods all the time!!! It's not to save!!! It's to use!!! My guess on jars is 1223 total!!! Probably to high put I'm sticking with it!!! God Bless!!!

*** My guess is 1,200 jars total on the shelf) Hi Rachel, Mike does most of the canning and I do the organizing. Your pantry is beautiful and abundant. When we first started years ago we tried not to use the food because like you said it's lot's of work. We pickled more this year than ever, cucumbers, green beans, carrots, okra, cabbage. Some nights after work we will make a pickle platter with cheese and some meat with a glass of wine. We have white boards and I keep inventory, just need to make sure Mike updates when he takes and adds. Thanks for sharing, Blessings Rochelle.

I think you have around 1470 jars on the shelves. You once said your jars are about 7 jars deep. Roughly 13-14 rows on each self. 7 quart shelves and 8 pint shelves. 14x (7+8)=1470 + 50 (to account for the double stacked ones) =1520.
My guess is around 1520 jars!!! đŸ˜źđŸ˜źđŸ˜źâ€â€â€đŸ˜ŠđŸ˜ŠđŸ˜Š
