Yosemite Thunder and Hail Storm

- A pretty wild storm surprised us and escalated quickly while backpacking along the John Muir Trail in the Yosemite High Country (only 10% chance of rain lol). We barely made it to our campsite in time before it started dumping down hail for hours along with some intense lightning and thunder echoing through Lyell Canyon where we were.
The hail was the largest I've experienced (up to 3/4" in the diameter), but we stayed dry and comfortable in our nice and sturdy MSR tent. The hail ended up staying frozen on the ground until the next morning making it look like it snowed in the middle of summer.
Craziest thing about the whole experience though was the second to last lightning strike of the storm actually hitting ground within a 100 ft. of our tent. Didn't get that on video unfortunately, as it happened as the storm seemed to be fading out, but it sounded like a bomb went off right next to us and blew apart a tree or something like that. Probably the scariest experience of our lives.
Storm ended up clearing out just before dark though and the quality sunset it left behind put us back into high spirits.
The only problem with these rain storm tent videos is they are usually too short. I love hearing the rain hit the tent when I’m camping!
I am from South, FL and visited Yosemite back in 2012 with my wife and parents. My God, what a majestic place! Only poetry can describe its beauty. We went to Glacier point and Mariposa Grove, can't wait to take my kids there one day.
I love the rain.😊🇬🇧
Wow! I would have snuggled in a sleeping bag and read a book until I drifted off to a wonderful sleep.
Beautiful scenery and prime time with your kid, can't beat it!
Saved on my sound fx. Beautiful sunset at the end. Thanks!
There@the end what a magnificent sky !!!
And knowing that the camera never does justice to the scene I can only imagine how awesome it really must have been!!
You are living in a beautiful land. I wish i could visit places like that. Bless ya.
Stunning sunset

Thnx for share with us
Yosemite is beautiful. I also love to be in a tent when it rains
Wow, I would've laid down and had the best sleep in years with that kind of storm.
Or you might have pee-d your pants and shook with fear all night. (smile)
rhi gel Guessing you've never lived in Texas before LOL Talk about storms. This one is child's play
@@VangusKhan You are the tough guy.
@morning glory I camped in a hail storm in East Texas and lost two tents to that thing. Also got nifty bruises from the 1-2 inch hail. I have some pictures somewhere if you want to see the damage and injuries ^^
Hail storms are the best storms!
@@Erich-Lab hey, which tent do you use? Do you think there is a tent strong enough? Or can you recommend a tent?
Absolutely beautiful country and a nice thunderstorm with a awesome sunset as the cherry on top. I grew up in So.Cal and can kick myself for not taking full advantage of what the Sierras can offer. I'm in North Carolina now and occasionally hit the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains but they fail in comparison to the mighty Sierras.
Cool video.. thanks for sharin
Natures white sound for sleeping. Thanks
Nice tent
Lol whenever I'm in a rainstorm I don't last more than 5 minutes and then I fall asleep
Sounds like my sex life, only without the rainstorm, and the extra 4 minutes
@@adampaul2986 lol 😃u kill me!!!!:)
I love when the wind comes in between where the tent stops and the ground begins! It's invigorating!
wonderful footage, thanks for filming :) Tim
CANNOT BEAT M S R TENTS..........
moorwalker Daz Lol well done Daz, yes mate the proof is in the pudding, they can sure take a hammering alright :) Tim
I live in middle east K.S.A i wish if i spend my vacation in such a place like that ! Wo0ow so beautiful weather so romantic so relaxing, i would love to stay there for days as long as i can to enjoy that kind of awesome weather with my friends :D
Perfect weather for camping lol that is amazing.
When God gives you ice make some cocktails !
Fortunately, an interesting experience and not a tragic or dangerous one - not hit by lightning or a falling tree, not blown over by high winds, not washed away by a flash flood...and all those things do happen!
Great sunset! Funny, we had a similar situation a few years ago in the high country north of Hetch Hetchy. Personally, I can't stand being cooped up like that during a storm. So I ALWAYS carry heavy raingear -- especially a thick rubber sou'wester for hail protection. Find a nice, low-ish grove of trees to minimize lightning risk, stay off the ridgelines, and take in the views most people miss!
Fantastic!
awesome video!
Gorgeous area...🙂
Indeed
Nice view at the end of the video
I love the sound of hail.
Cool Video Sir! Looks chili
You guys were brave!!! Thank God, you made it...I have no idea what would happen if lighting hits a tent. Guess it wouldn't end well...
that looks like a good tent
In a good mood
Funny how the stones fall mostly in the lake and around the tent. Lol.
WOW, the reflection is beautiful and, and, and, it's just amazing.GREATE experience.👌👍
That's quite the hail!
Awesomeness !
Nice place!
My husband's motto, never camp close to trees when windy & or raining & also lighting
excellent tent hah? enjoy
I haven't heard thunder like this for years now... where I come from... thunders cracking sound is so extreme it can shake houses... so loud...
Awesome
Someone stole the floor of your tent. Don't feel bad, I went out fishing and they stole my entire tent. You only lost half.
+schlaznger Haha it's hard to see in the video, but the tent actually does have a floor. It's a double wall tent and has two doors and vestibule storage areas outside of the inner tent. That's a bummer about your tent getting stolen though. Can't believe some people.
@Derek Sinclair drinking doesnt pay 'eh????😄
Imagine having no tent for protection. Ouch!
Does anybody know which tent it is?
Thanks for sharing.
Was it intentional that you camped next to the river? I'm not familiar with the place but there is always dangers of flash flooding.
+Kyle R Normally we camp further away from water for impact reasons, but the storm was coming in fast, we needed to find a nice flat spot to setup quick. Only a 10% chance of thunderstorms that day, so we didn't think flash flooding would be an issue. Definitely learned to be more mindful of that now
Don't you guys get feeling scare lightening ? and how could choose a good place for avioce from the bad thing could be happening during raining ?
You are so lucky, it must be feeling so nice . I wish i could do the same, woooow
nice video, good camera
Him 'I hope our tent can handle this!' Me 'I hope lightening doesn't strike the tree we've pitched under!'
Fun!
Dont your tent have a floor?
Thats life
Hey Dustin, just curious to know if this video is from the month of June. Preparing ourselves for a possible June hike throw Lyell Canyon. :D
+Brian Waddle Yeah this trip was the beginning of June. Any of the spring through summer months you can get thunderstorm activity up there, even if the area's general forecast isn't really predicting them. So best to be prepared for them with at least a rain jacket/shell and fly for your tent. Usually they'll show up early afternoon and don't last long. Good idea to get most of your mileage done in the morning if and when possible, unless you don't mind hiking in the rain. You never know up there though. The weather is highly variable.
***** Thank you for the insight.
excellent view at 4:32
Wow did you survive?
Why don't u have a bottom on the tent?
this is my asmr
Sounds like you're frying bacon in your tent.
All your gear is going to get wet because you have a tent with no
bottom. Now all the insects are heading for your tent to get out of
the rain and there a little bigger than the ones in the city. Happy camping!
No floor in the tent?
Always bring a Tarp! just for extra help.
Opps, you guy's.
I don't believe in rain flys, but excellent, light tarps are available. Always carry one.
✌
great choice in storing your bear canister in the vestibule :-)
MrGotfast Haha thanks for commenting (trolling maybe?), but don't worry we actually store it outside away from the tent at night when we are done using it. I'd think it would take a pretty eager/desperate bear to want to track down a closed bear canister during the day in a rainstorm that's sitting in a tent with two people in it. ;-)
Snap, crackle and plop!
Rain camping shelter super 🏕️🏕️🌧️🌧️👌😍
what camera did you use thanks
+Solo Bikepacker Canon T2i for this video with kit lens
It's got some of the best quality audio! If you go there again and get hit by another storm, could you record the entire thing including the before and after? That would be so nice. @@DeeboskimThank you very much.
Were you able to get that? It looked like you only got the second half of my reply that says "Thank you very much." If you didn't, just read my question above that. Sorry about that; I don't know how it wound up like that.
what msr model is that???
I was just thinking the same. I'm looking at 2 tents at the moment and one of them looks to be this one.
The hail didn't tear up your tent? I live in an area notorious for big hail......
I was pretty worried about that, but no it didn't damage the tent at all. This MSR tent has a pretty thick and durable rain fly, but pretty sure some of the Ultra light style tent fabrics I've seen would gotten tore up.
I would have stayed outside and enjoyed the show.
Best
I love watching this video and their is just something about being in a tent in a storm. check us out we are from the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee area.
We got hail the size of golf balls with huge pointy spikes on them.
Which MSR tent was this in your video? -Carl
I can't remember the model and it has since been discontinued. It's a 3 person similar to their Hubba models, but has less mesh on the inner walls and was rated for 3.5 seasons. We mainly use it now for shoulder season camping when temps are cold and rain or snow is in the forecast. It's still as good as new.
@@Deeboskim So is the model info not included anywhere on the inside of the tent, or was it only included in the packaging? I thought the manufacturer was supposed to include it on the inside either near a zipper or the inner-most layer where you open and close the entrance. Even if they've discontinued it, I'd like to know in case they have one at a surplus store near me. Sometimes, our local newspaper "Where can I Find It?" section author will look for it if we know exactly what type or model it is. Thank you very much in advance if you find it.
I wonder what make of tent it is
sorry msr
i thoulght someone stole mine once
it was 30 feet in a pine tree lol.
Dude!
Mark it's just a Canon Rebel T2i
Hell with the sunset look at the river rising!
What part of Yosemite was this at?
+Exduper Lyell Canyon
+dustin boone Thanks. I did the "Hump" trail to Pear Lake last May. Good times, but the weather cooperated, so no hail :-). Good video, thanks for sharing.
are there no bears?
What a great trip, and your with your girlfriend.
The girls friend needs to be in her own tent
3:35 10 ft to the left is completely safe
i would have gone fishing
