- During the waning weeks of the war in Virginia, 1st Lt. John Downing commanded the Sharpshooter Battalion of the 25th Army Corps' 2nd Division. He served in this capacity on detached duty from his regiment, the 127th U.S. Colored Infantry. Some of the enlisted men in the 127th served as sharpshooters with him. This was just one of his roles during the war, which spans his early service with the 44th New York Infantry to defending the Texas-Mexico border.

44th New York aka Ellsworth Avengers or People's Ellsworth Zouaves. One of my favorite units too.
To say his obit didn't do home justice would be an understatement. Thanks again.
Interesting +. Great record of service for this Captain...WIA numerous times...tough sort!
Keep this coming Ron!
What an amazing story. I guess we don’t know about his life post Civil war.
Thank you, run, that was quite interesting.
great story about an interesting man
rose from Private to Captain and wounded multiple times without dying!
Although it’s likely his descendants know little and more likely none this. I’m sure many of them would be thrilled to discover this history… I know I would!
Wounded five times! And not one purple heart......
Here's a story that explains why he did not receive the Purple Heart: www.nationalww2museum.org/war/articles/history-of-the-purple-heart#:~:text=The%20Purple%20Heart%20is%20the,Washington%20on%20August%207%2C%201782.
@@lifeonthecivilwarresearchtrail Thanks... although I was not aware of the exact dates I was pretty sure no one got the Purple Heart during the Civil War.
