James Randi and a Psychic Artist

- A medium contacts the spirits (apparently), while a 'psychic artist' draws the face of the spirit being contacted.
This is a good example of bad cold-reading. Cold-reading is the main technique used by self-proclaimed psychics such as Sylvia Browne and John Edward. It consists of throwing out random snippets of vague, highly generalised information (often names, numbers or initial letters) until one connects, then attempting to fit further information to it using logical guesswork and probability.
To the recipient of the psychic reading, this gives a strong illusion of specific information coming from some outside source. The recipient usually leaves convinced that the psychic was highly accurate, that they knew things they could never possibly have known, etc.
It is sometimes combined with 'hot reading', whereby the perfomer already has information about the person being given the reading, found out beforehand through a number of methods. The big-name TV psychics and faith healers use this technique heavily.
The effect is even more impressive if the psychic is performing on TV and has editorial control over the proceedings. Then, almost anything can be made to seem true.
From episode 1 of 'James Randi - Psychic Investigator' (1991)
* This video is fully annotated, and explains the techniques used by the psychic *
So when you die your spirit hangs around a second rate BBC studio waiting to be sketched and make contact with an old woman....
+ShaunJW1 Yes, it's what they call "Hell"
+Matt Moves hahaha
That's what I plan to do. Just wander around yelling "Yoohoo! Can YOU see me? No? Hey, you! Other guy, can YOU see me!? No? Bugger...Hey kid, boo! Nothing? Bah!" until one day I'll wander into a studio or a poorly lit house.
ShaunJW1 it must be all the illuminati symbolism in the background that is keeping em there lol
ShaunJW1 that some depressing shit
that lady is such a waste of good art talent
IKR!!
I'm pretty sure she made (or still makes) a lot of money from her talent! So many people believe in this! Should be against the law to charge for this type of service.
she sure is,people will pay money for them drawings
ThatJakebox true true i like her style its simple but its got something special
Drawing a generic portrait is far from artistic talent, it's an acquired and practised skill.
Our generation needs another show like this
Yup, but this time about things like racism, sexism and etc ... after HQ cameras invented we rarely see such claims in a broad cast.
Mansour GA We have other bullshit beliefs that linger without any evidence to support them, not just psychic visions or telepathy. It's disconcerting how many people believe in homeopathy, acupuncture, or that genetically modified food is bad for you. I agree that we should also be mythbusting commonly held bullshit beliefs regarding social issues, such as sexism and racism as well. I think the show that comes closest to doing this is Adam Ruins Everything.
"Dont make it fit, what ever you do"
Now that is fun
Claims of paranormal aside, it's really quite impressive how quickly she was able to produce that drawing.
Bishonen Princess.
Embossed paper is one of the oldest tricks ever!
Rolf Harris could do pretty much the same...... Oh
"Does the name John mean anything to you? Johnson? Johnny? James? Jack? You must remember Jack. No? Jackson?"
"Yes! I had a friend called Tony Jackson!"
"Tony's coming through very strongly. He died at quite a young age didn't he?"
"Oh, he's not dead, he just moved to Australia."
Steve27775 Now THAT was fuckn funny....... pmsl...
I love the psychic in the movie Ghost played by Whoopi Goldberg. "He is a handsome man." Widow in shock: "Handsome??!!"
Goldberg as the psychic: "In our Father's realm, we are *all* handsome. The widow is now overjoyed that her husband is doing well.
With these" psychics, " they can never be "wrong".
my Big Johnny is responding.
Im dying😂
Jinny...? Jinson? .... Jonny Jackson...Jack Johnson???? Jamie Johnson?? Jonnie Jamieson??? I feel his presence here.
Eh, well at least she's a good sketch artist.
MegaSnake1000 is she though? wouldn't be able to catch the killer if a bunch of people recognised them :P
Daniel Thornton maybe a lot of people have seen the killer. isnt it better if more people can place them? lol
+Daniel Thornton She wouldn't just be making the woman up though. She'd have actual features to draw. :P
+Daniel Thornton She wouldn't just be making the woman up though. She'd have actual features to draw. :P
Not really, a faint outline in pencil would be invisible to the cameras, but as easy as pissing on your hand to draw over,, but not as dirty!!
How to behave as a woo-woo believer on CZcams:
1. Make an outrageous claim
2. Give anecdotal accounts as 'proof'
3. Ignore all requests for supporting evidence
4. State logical fallacies (appeals to authority, appeals to popularity, etc)
5. Demonstrate total ignorance of the scientific method and the peer review process
6. Refer to the works of pseudoscientists (Sheldrake, Zammit etc)
7. Make rationalizations to avoid any scientific testing
8. Claim that skeptics are not 'true' skeptics
9. Claim that skeptics haven't done their research, get their information from Randi, etc.
10. Claim there is a conspiracy among skeptics and scientists to prevent the spread of knowledge
11. Descend into juvenile, condescending behaviour
During the eight years these videos have been up, I've had people claiming the existence of telepathy, gods, demigods, demons, fairies, auras, channeling, 'auric sight', 'magick', 'spirit ecosystems', dowsing for dogs, fifteen different definitions of astrology, interdimensional shapeshifting aliens, 'transcendental surgery' (where spirits perform the operation), magic talismans, disembodied minds, 'omnipresent thought particles', nature spirits, curing cancer by thought and ghosts appearing in JPG's of gravestones when you stare at them. Plus a conspiracy among scientists to prevent the public from finding all this out. And this is barely scratching the surface.
The gamut of human gullibility and fallibility staggers me. Other skeptics sometimes ask me why I bother engaging with these people to the extent that I do, when it is clearly pointless. I do it because the internet is rife with claims such as these, and such claims need to be challenged. I am happy for others to follow these discussions and draw their own conclusions.
+UncleFeedle You do good work, man.
+UncleFeedle I am proud to be this comment's 50th like.
As much as I would love to live in a world of magic and psionics, there just isn't the proof in that bowl of pudding.
Should u respect these people's beliefs?
+UncleFeedle Pity that established religion gets off scott free. Same shit, different bucket.
+SOSA1beast here's the thing about beliefs and respect of said beliefs. a belief is an idea, and ideas must be challenged. to say that we should JUST respect people's beliefs is to say that we must not challenge their ideas, and that we should just agree with them from the start, and that is a bad thing to do.
I love the way these scam artists use the word :" Possibly"
It's kind of like the TV shows which try to prove that aliens exist, or the Illuminati, or something like that. I swear, every sentence that tries to convey an idea to the audience starts with "is it possible?"
MegaSnake1000
It's difficult to discredit things of that nature without inquiry through proper research. Look up the Disclosure Project
KnowledgeIsKey215
Scientific skepticism is not about discrediting claims, it's about finding evidence in support of claims. Without evidence, belief is not justified, particularly when it comes to extraordinary claims such as psychic powers.
Darth Rabbit a scam but people still believe in it
jonboy walton
Watch the documentary on the Scole Experiment...
2:50
"The picture doesn't fit with her. That's fine."
What? That's like saying "The runway was too short and the plane crashed. That's fine."
Why didn't she just become a painter ? ^^ honest and she is very good at it!
Jesse Sisolack
I don't think its a mental condition. the people who claim to have psychic powers and are not faking it arnt aware what they are doing is a trick anyone can do. and when they make those "hits" they are so astonished they are convinced they are psychics when they arnt. and when found out to not be true they cant believe it themselves.
james Randi said it best, the reason why is because they are stubborn.
not as profitable
We're working under slightly difficult circumstances. Yeah, all scam artists like him say that.
Every video of James Randi Debunks has 60 or close to 60 dislikes, I'm sensing that 60 psychics new age crystal hipsters are buthurt.
lolol you're totally right
people need more Logic and Reason
Nice!
People want to believe the lie because it make them feel better even though all logic disproves the facts.
Bit like that with religion. I suppose.
I would like them to contact my grandmother who did not speak English.
+romansUK I had a Psychic medium from England do a reading for me last week when I was in Stansted, UK. My ancestors, grandparents, father, my husband parents, and my three brothers that died many years ago all came to connect with me for that reading and non spoke English. This lovely lady was almost 100% accurate with all the descriptions with regard to their life, characters, features, and and how they died and the messages they had for me. It was an hour and a half private reading, so I will not disclose what was said and how they know my where about in life right now and what I needed to workout and how I need to do so with my current situations. I've never met that Psychic Medium lady in my life up until last week.
+Alda Syr
Congratulations, you've discovered cold-reading.
+Alicia S it's still a scam and they are really good at reading you
+Alicia S Congrats. You met the real psichic :)))) Sad how guilible you are. Just because you don't understand how exactly she tricked you , doesn't mean she didn't trick you :)
after they 'cross-over', all of them speak English in the other dimension...:P
Do we have someone who knows someone who died from one of the most common causes of death in the UK? :L
And yet they only half got one out of this audience XD
Edward Dibley dude I’m in Canada. How could you possibly know this about me?
Edward Dibley Yes and with the most common given name in Christendom...
Even if spirits are real, i wonder how hard they must be laughing after all this.
I doubt they care. Somehow I doubt if you are in Hell you can see the earth....now in Heaven I believe you might have that ability to watch your loved ones...I dont really know.
David Burk
In Nirvana you can't.
David Burk "I dont really know" No shit mate
Jesus din die for you 2 just ett a Big Mac. He died for Merica is free. Jesus my friend ins hevan.
Anyone else troll like this? It seems to get more replies than proper English because stupid people seem to understand it better.
The drawing kind of looks like a female George Washington
indeed
Maybe George Washington was a cross dresser.
To the uploader: Thank you for making these videos viewable here on CZcams. I love James Randi and can't seem to get enough of his debunking. I appreciate it.
No problem
why are people embarrassing themselves like this?
*Money*
And why are those in the audience clapping?
I often wonder the same thing about the Trump administration.
yea a record breaking economy and wall street is happy, strange
Hardly record breaking. Also, every economic crash that has occurred was first met with a fast rise before it plummeted.
I believe strongly in mental telepathy and foretelling the future. When I was a young lad and I got caught playing hooky from school, I knew right then my dad was going to give me a good ass whooping later that very same day. And sure enough.... he did.
If someone could really tell the future then they woud play the lottery.
Absolutely love Randi! He's so calm, lets everyone make their case, doesn't claim the supernatural is real or not, he's polite, fun and so clever. Just such a fantastic human being
How did he get people onto his show? If I were that blatantly a fraud there's no way I'd do that. Perhaps his ability to get charlatans on his show proves that Randi had super-natural powers. ;)
He offer 1 million dollar if any one proved he is wrong.
+R TE But you'd think they'd be aware that they were going to fail.
Maybe show offer money just for participation and maybe they thought they can beat the Randi even everyone before them failed, after all these people are dirty scammers....
Anyway he stopped this long time ago lot of people sued Randi, even though he won all of them he spent lot of money to defend himself.
They come becouse a lot of mediums seriously believe their own shit. Its a bit like every thief believe his method so good he dont get cought, but in the end, they all got cought.
a Psychopath is not necessarily act to harm people physically, there are many of Psychopath who live normally ! and there are others who are already leader of communities and even countries. So the key here is they believe they have such powers and fool people make them to even have more believe in that.
Of course there are many charlatans out there that i can give them an IQ above high for understanding live is a short period and they should do anything to make it enjoyable for themselves. Not honorable from my perspective o f view, but yet understandable.
what a beautiful drawing of Anne Frank
"we might have 2 links here " ...
"don't make it fit... whatever you do" she says knowing full well that NONE OF IT FITS unless you make very tenuous links
she could make a living honestly by just drawing...
0:12
"Is this a picture of a dear departed soul" *shows himself* lol
the buffoon ' ghost hunter' looks like john Cleese.
Man.................John Cleese would have made a fucking brilliant buffoon ghost hunter. XD
ambulance girl Agreed. Couldn't run into a better ghost tbh. XD
"he will make a fucking brilliant ghost some day"
He's already been a buffoon ghost. In the Harry Potter movies he played Nearly Headless Nick, a ghost who inhabited (lived at? haunted?) Hogwarts.
It's a sort of improvisation based on hints.
"I'm getting a very elderly lady with lots of lines on her face and thinning grey hair and she's very frail ... hold on ... now she's telling me she used to be young and fit with lots of thick dark hair and a lovely unlined complexion ... I'm getting some more ... she was born at a very young age, in a bed ... does that sound familiar to anyone? ... Ah, yes, yes, I hear you dear ... she's saying she might have had children, but might not have -- her memory is not what it was ... and her husband had a quite common name starting with one of the letters of the alphabet -- but definitely NOT X, Y, Z or U ... Oh, sorry dear! I misheard ... she says it COULD have been U because she had an ancestor from Italy in 1246 and his name might have been Umberto or Ussolini ... she definitely remembers hearing about or seeing a newsreel about or reading about someone being bombed in either World War 1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam or Bosnia-Herzegovena ... I'm getting the feeling she's telling me about severe breathing problems -- minutes, even seconds, or just as she died ... Oh yes, that's VERY strong, she's telling me she REALLY remembers not breathing after she died."
FACT!!! But tell that to James Smart-Alec Randi and he won't believe you!
She really remembers not breathing after she died? Hahaha
I enjoy debating the subject of paranormal skepticism. This is why I began this CZcams account. I certainly don't spend all week on it. And I'm quite happy with my life, thank you very much.
"Do you know a Will Butler"
"NO"
"Don't make it fit"
😂😂😂😂
32103045 I know that Will Butler is alive and well and playing in the band Arcade Fire!
Her assistant looks like John Cleese lol
I fart in your general direction.
That old lady is a damn good artist. Gotta give her that, but that's it.
what a great artist! I wish I could draw that nice that freaking quick
The best part is the artist walking in a circle and saying to the spirits "come on..sort yourselves out"...acting like that deserves an oscar nomination.
bruh at 2:34 i could have sworn he said possible heart condition in her vagaina. lmfaooo
I recognize that face as madam bullshit
3 months ago I also sold off or gave away a lot of my material possessions and let go of my flat and became homeless. I travelled a little with the money I got from my DVD's, books & clothes to broaden my mind since I'd not been able to leave the UK since I got here over 7 years ago & re-evaluated what I want to do with my life. And this work, giving readings, demonstrations & also furthering my own understanding & research into the unknown is what makes me happiest, everything else is a hobby
"Dont make it fit, whatever you do."
I sense a J coming through, and an A after that, anyone in the audience have a third cousin who's name is either

Oh yes I knew it!
No, but I saw a movie once with a Jajar Binks in it, does that count?
The more I watch this the more annoyed I get at how bad
these two goons are. And call me cynical but I find it dodgy
how the one man who is agreeing with them is also a so called
medium. Maybe he didnt want to see his fellow con merchants
get nothing perhaps?
lol I'm in a fit of tears reading that. Nice one!
what a great con. they work so well together.
2:04 *feels face gently*
Ah you butlahh?
1:40 illuminatie xD
So am i, for some reason i just discovered him today and i can't get enough!
good annotations, well worth watching.
Why do they even wanna paticipate ?... They must know what they are doing is fake....so they must know that it will go horribly wrong ! ^^
Sometimes people tell themselves a lie so often, their mind begins to believe its the truth. Its a way to cope with cognitive dissonance.
EndQuarkConfinement
I think other go there just to sponsor them, there will always be some believers ready to follow them. Other just try it out and hope to et lucky and pass the test.
People are either somehow convinced of their psychic ability or (more likely here I think) so convinced of their ability to make it up that they can show Randi up.
Probably Psychotic rather than psychic, So are delusional.
"Is there life after death" is it me or is that a massive contradiction. If there was life, consciousness, whatever after death, then it wouldn't be death... doesn't the concept of death mean the end? nothing? no one? is there such a thing as death? or life? Not saying anything for definite but just wondering, you know... if there was life after death, there would be no such thing as death...?
AjnaFX edgy
AjnaFX lol also "did they pass quickly?" "No they took 78 years to die !
Haha brilliant
I'd imagine the spirits looking at the drawings are like "WTF, I don't even look remotely like that?, and on top of that she has the wrong sex!
@ebrobaru If you are really interested in the matter of the transcendental surgery, we can communicate via PM, but publically I wont reveal such things.
Lady is just trying to show off her drawing skills
I must admit, that's an awesome drawing
What kind of controls would you have put in place to satisfy there was no tricks? I employ many of my own controls already but I'm genuinely interested to hear what a sceptic believes I might try and do, so I can proof my demonstrations against any accusation. So, what controls would you expect?
The process you highlight is actually similar to an exercise we do.. and we don't consider it random chance. I give my students a container with 25 folded pieces of paper in it and each one pulls out a word on the paper which ends up being very significant to them. The belief is that spirit have a hand in guided the chooser to the right paper or object, much in the same was as Tarot readers are guided towards which cards they choose. This is where science and spirituality cross over a bit.

This is essentially a team cold reading with illustrations.
I love that at 2 minutes the mustache man admits that he'll only stick with the name if someone says it fits them.
Why is the masonic eye in the triangle o n the floor and on the back. What's the name of the place?
as soon as she said 'obviously got a lady coming through' I would have put up my hand
@nekoaure What exactly is a transcendental surgery? How so you know that it worked?
CZcams somehow changed the whole thing again, I saw that many times, when lower rated comments somehow where on the top, I think it might be something to do with the timespan in between rates or something?
0:40 I LOVE how her first sentence explains the huge gullibility in people who believe in something that is imaginary.
"We're trying out best." Hilarious.
2:55
"Sometimes we work like that"
=
"Sometimes we utterly fail"
This is hysterical.
11 years later and it’s still hysterical. 😂
"throw enough balls at enough coconuts, you win a goldfish"
"First, is this a picture of a dear, departed soul? No, it's a drawing of me."
What is the theme music that plays in the background
i love the ambient music. so spooky..**
What's really interesting, is that as an artist myself, and as someone who notices specifics, the faces the woman drew (both the examples and the demonstation), all have very common facial features. It's like this one image in a creepypasta, actually. The face that is shown is something compiled of common features to make a face most people will find familiar. It's not something anyone has likely ACTUALLY seen in reality, but it is made to FEEL like it. That is the trick here.
@nekoaure What exactly was the matter of the "surgery"? What was wrong with you and how do you feel better?
Gotta love the guy's face of defeat at the end.
@UncleFeedle I love these videos, and I enjoy your commentary. While I am certainly no "Randite," I have great respect for the man, as it appears you do. I have a question. Do you know if Randi plans to do any more of these shows? Ever since I saw his conference at TED, I have been looking for his video's voraciously.
If the test is designed correctly, that is all that will be needed. What and how much information can you glean from these spirits you detect, and what degree of accuracy can typically be expected?
Where can I find his full shows
Woman: Can speed sketch very well.
Also woman: I will grift people with this skill.
If I was one of these people and saw James on stage I would just walk away.
@sooperfukker Oh my GOD!!!!!!! I came out of the john only a few minutes ago!!!! You have a gift!!!
This has become my new favourite video just for how "sketchy" they are"
These conmen need to be pranked. Have 20 friends show up and *ALL* raise their hands.
When you have a picture of anybody, it's bound to look similar to someone in the audience or at home. I see random pictures all the time and think of how much that person looks like someone I know. So that doesn't mean anything. But like you said in the description box, it's just a really bad example of bad cold reading. If they were really psychic, they'd have someone coming through that they could relay meaningful messages to someone in the audience from that person they say they're able to contact. It's just all bullshit and I'm so glad James Randi exposes these frauds for what they are. But thanx for the video.
"I can only draw white people. specifically Byzantine Era Roman Empire folks" lol
Passed away from chest or heart problems. Had hair that got thinner with age….WOW, psychic miracle 😂
the annotations made me laugh, I mean that in a good way :)
@ebrobaru Transcdental surgery is also called as spiritual surgery, where a surgery is made by spirits in the spiritual body, and then the effects comes from this one to the physical body. It's made to relieve or even heal a body disorder. I know that it worked because it had a strong and noticiable effect in my physical body.
So it doesn't matter if it is real, or whether their dead relative still exists, as long as they go away happy. How wonderful.
I actually post these responses for the benefit of others who read through the comments. I welcome others to look through such exchanges and come to their own opinions.
Don't fight it, embrace it.
Very interesting "Cold Reading" .
Was that a Freudian slip when the chancer woman said, ‘they’ll make it fit whatever you do’?
The woman drawing said, "Dont make it fit whatever you do."
I already said a few times.. I was the Subject of the test.. 10 trainee mediumships tried to read me in the circle. I gave them a fake name, didn't speak, to prevent them detecting my foreign accent... they did not expect the test, they thought they were doing a meditation class..i also did not know i would be the subject of the test until i was half way to the location of the test, i thought i was going to check out a space for a workshop. It proved these people had abilities in my mind.
"Don't make it fit." Stop, you're killin' me, folks!
The guy in this also appeared on the Wogan show where he had one of the most epic fails ever seen on national television. He tried to demonstrate his mediumship to the audience and crashed and burned. The host couldn't hide his smirk.
"... anyway, thank you very much Carl and Steven... " wait what?
What was this show called?
LOL, "I don't know if you've heard of that name, have you?" "No." "Right, next person." -_-
A: "I keep a leprechaun in my basement."
B: "Ok, let's see it."
A: "I have a lot of experience with leprechauns."
B: "Not relevant. Show me the leprechaun."
A:"I won't show it to you, but I've convinced some other people that it is real".
B: "That doesn't mean anything. Where is your evidence?"
A: "I have more authority on leprechauns than you so you can't comment on it."
B: "That's redundant. You haven't even show it to be real."
A: "You can't prove my leprechaun doesn't exist."
etc...
