This week, Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Jayashree Arunachalam and Shardool Katyayan are joined by The News Minute’s Pooja Prasanna and lawyer Vakasha Sachdev.
On the Karnataka polls, Pooja says the JDS and BJP are “better allies” than the Congress and JDS since “their target base does not overlap. Both parties bring something new and fresh to the table”. She adds that the “myth of the Vokkaligas being secular is nonsense”.
The panel discusses the inheritance tax debate, with Vakasha saying the tax has a solid rationale behind it “from a social justice perspective”. Jayashree says the matter escalated into a controversy because people are “conflating a lot of things, like what Modi said about the Congress taking away people’s money”. Shardool adds, “Most of the people arguing about this tax won’t have to pay it because it applies to the creamy layer of society.”
Vakasha then explains why the PMLA is problematic. On the state of the Indian judiciary, he says over the years, “we’ve had our justice system constantly become a voice for the establishment”, adding that there is a lack of critique of the courts. Abhinandan says people are possibly “afraid of critiquing the court because of contempt of court...so courts have completely gone out of scrutiny”.

A deeper concern I think is the question of what is the conviction that the person or more importantly their parent who earned the assets and wealth have about this tax being put to good use. What is the India they have encountered in the pursuit of that wealth? This btw is a general problem I have with taxation not anywhere else as much as in India. If I do not see the country in any way shape or form taking that money putting it into the future of my children and my society am I not safer securing the future of my family?
Also here’s a solution .. third generation gets taxed the fuck out of their inheritance

One more thing. When people say inheritance is unearned, it pains me to not that I am eligible for that law, BUT I work 5-6 days a week 12hr shift. If by any miracle I’m able to save enough time to leave 5-10 million worth of property for my child, that is unearned.
I know there are exceptions. But just a good for thought.
I do thank Waheguru that I am able to work, but that doesn’t marginalize my hard work.

Inheritance tax is a great idea provided it actually covers everyone rather than providing another loophole to super rich to skip on them, which we know would happen. Does INC for example plans to introduce estate tax for farmers ? Because we know that plenty of politicians already hide their wealth in farming, which is tax-exempt.
Sorry, I need to disagree. The panels views on inheritance tax are atrocious. If someone has worked hard and saved to pass it on, the state has no right to have a part of the pie!

Hi Team, I couldn't resist to register my complaint. I watched/heard 5 times the part where Vakasha was talking about the inheritance tax, I don't know who is "pikati" - The english was just like Jayashree, why I like those episodes where these highly educated people do not speak too much, I do not understand the English they speak, I can understand US accent and the UK as well, but Indian's vocabulary is so vast and the way SOBO and South Delhi and South Chennai guys speaks they just mess this big time, so casual but and fast and without opening the mouth .. I got headache and I super angry - because he was talking very important and interesting ... but fu#k it.
I am definitely not a BJP supporter but I lean center right on fiscal issues. I have been voting for BRS, even though I don't particularly like them, because I have no option with BJP or congress. If congress becomes more conservative fiscally i will have a party to identify with, up until then people like me only have options at the state level.

Wealth and inheritance tax is must in India given massive income and living style inequality, this society has Party like SP where out of 62 candidates 2 are of family, same goes with NCP, BJP, CONGRESS, JDS. See, when Rajasthan, MP, Chattisgarh assembly elections were held all predictions were in favour of opposition parties, including opinion polls.
But finally unbelievable happened all doubts were on EVMs and still that strong conviction exist. That's why prominent people went to supreme court against EVM.
When first phase election was going on EVM case was under SC and there was an impression that SC is going to order counting of 100% VVPAT slip. This fear, coupled with the low voting percentage in first phase has shaken the confidence of Modi, as a result he went out of control and started uttering hate speeches.
But you see the change in Modi from yesterday after the supreme court (comedy) order in EVM case. There is visible relief on the face of Modi and Amit Shah. That means something transpired at higher level just before the supreme court order. Now Modi seems to be little calm. Means, the circumstantial evidence indicate that there is heightened possibility of EVM / VVPAT manipulation.
So don't think that Modi and Shah will go down without fighting. They have the support of all traitors in Police forces, Civil service and judiciary. They have huge black money power to purchase anybody and power to offer any cream positions in Govt. They have no respect in human rights and democratic principles. So anything can happen wrong with election process and EVM and they can manipulate final result. Surat is a small example.

Its seems that the American Estate tax threshold is $13million, in Germany it’s an inheritance tax that varies between 7%-30%.
