      Yes in 1990's he was simply unbeatable. In fast grass courts he had unmatchable serve and volley game.

    I believe Sampras is the GOAT in tennis. He started when Edberg, Becker were at peak. Then he had to compete many great players of his generation like Agassi, Courier, Chang, Stitch, Rafter which is the reason why Sampras only won 14 majors. During his career, he managed to dominate all other players of his generation and won 14 majors. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic face less competition as there aren’t less good players of their generation. Perhaps, only Murray. So, in my view, I think Pete Sampras was and still is the GOAT in tennis.

      @bdgregorybd Před rokem

      @@minboogie I would say the three most versatile players of all time are 1. Federer 2. Djokovic and 3. Agassi. After that I really don't think any other particular player could dominate on every single surface. Nadal would never be a great serve and volley era player, Sampras would never win off of Wimbledon in this era, and Rod Laver never won a major on hard courts so I think his calendar slam means a little less because of that.

    It's really important to remember, when discussing who gets GOAT status, that sports medicine and nutrition keep getting better every year. A knee injury in Pete's heyday could shorten a player's career by five years, whereas the same injury today might shorten a player's career by five months. That's not to say that you could definitively say that Pete was above today's Big 3, but rather that comparing players between eras is always tricky.

    The difference between these players are generational and technology. Would have Roger, Rafael or Novak have stopped Rod Laver from winning 2 grand slams? Would Rod Laver have won those two grand slams today? It’s not fair to say who was better. Different technology both fitness and technology changes the game. The goat? That answer can’t be found. The best of the era is the best we can come up with at best, and even then it has intangibles to look at. The goat does not or will ever have a definitive answer.

    @samueltso1291 thank you so, so much for speaking the truth and highlighting what I’ve been saying for the past five, ten, fifteen and even twenty years or so to tennis fans and non tennis fans alike! Pete had to beat (THE BEST TENNIS PLAYERS IN HISTORY) (which wasn’t an easy feat during those years) to become (THE GREATEST TENNIS PLAYER OF ALL TIME) whilst the tennis players in recent years who began their careers (after 2001) are (NOWHERE NEAR) as challenged as much as Pete’s generation of tennis players were which includes the whole of the Sampras era because like you say (and like I’ve been saying since the year 2001 which was the year he should’ve won Wimbledon if he was allowed to have the time off to let his body recover from previous matches in Wimbledon that same year) he could’ve won a lot more matches long before that time if he wasn’t challenged as much as he was on and even off the court as well which includes the turmoil he was going through in 1996 which was why he would’ve and should’ve undoubtedly won Wimbledon that same year as well too… I should know what I’m talking about cause I was born in 1976 so I was there from very early on as a toddler and infant watching players all the way from John McEnroe to Bjorn Borg to Jimmy Conners to Stefan Edberg to Boris Becker to Michael Stich to Andre Agassi to Pete Sampras to Goran Ivañisević to Patrick Rafter to Yevgeny Kafelnikov to Mark Philippoussis to Lleyton Hewitt to Andy Rodrick (to name but a few) of that quarter of a century era but I’m gonna stop there because my own generation and personal era of tennis ends after 2001 which includes after and before the last three tennis players I mentioned began and ended their successful tennis careers…

    Stan Smith doesn't know jack squat. Love the different players but they all burnt out maybe not Laver, the big three find ways to survive and stay at the top. It is their fighting will and the love of game that helps them take the pressure that the previous generations lacked. They decided to retire when it became difficult to stay at the top. Love Borg, he has 11 within 6 years, probably the best win/year averages of the open era, but burnt out at 25. The tennis environment is also changing due to Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, it is becoming more hospitable unlike the yesteryears. They are to be credited for this achievement also.

      Totally disagree that the big 3 have a willpower other generations lacked. They've had the benefit of modern sports science which previous generations lacked....and each other's accomplishments to drive the others. Any great player from any era would find a way to win in another given the ability to train from a Yount age with the same technology

    • @wozmac771
      @wozmac771 Před rokem

      @@Skiiiiiifreeeeeee I can see your perspective, and would agree 50%. Here is my analysis. Borg was mentally very strong. Most probably the best average, in ATP for Slams. 11 GS titles, in 6 years. Burnt out at 25 because of pressure. Sampras, lost his mojo because of pressure and when he got Anemia (just found out a few months ago). Agassi was out the door and then he decided to come back, again due to pressure and dislike of the solo sporting. He was a team player. Becker, didn't want to lose.
      If you compare them with Federer (Bad back and had to work on mental game). Djokovic, asthma and wears contacts (have a slight prescription). Nadal, constant injuries.
      The difference is technology esp. in shoes. game has become a social media also, its not as isolated. These three and Andy Murray, travel with their family and friends that helps them a lot emotionally.
      They are fiercely competitive, need to show the other who is better and also have to fight the public. The family and friends connections help in the social side, but on the court they eat live and breathe tennis. All these keep improving in small things over the years. Plus being in the top 10, for 20 years is a sign of mental toughness.
