College Campuses Can Be Minefields For Comedians (HBO)

  • Veteran comedians like Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock say that millennials can’t take a joke - but some comics often won’t ever get the opportunity to perform on campus in front of them.
They complain college campuses are minefields of competing grievances and sensitivities for comics whose jokes touch on sensitive subjects like assault or gender,
VICE News went to Boston to talk to three campus bookers - the college comedy gatekeepers - who contend that they’re merely reflecting student taste.
They say they feel old-school comedians are woefully behind the times and need to acknowledge that certain jokes, particularly those about identity and sexual assault, can potentially cause psychological harm. And it’s their job, they say, to protect students from it.
But at New York City’s famous Comedy Cellar, where VICE News talked with standup Judy Gold, nothing is off limits (provided that the joke is funny). Gold also warns students that the “world doesn't have to adjust” to student sensitivities.

Long story short, children in college do not run the system, they can have huge impacts on the entertainment industry and advertising agencies since they are the group with the disposable income that attracts those entities. Yet beyond protesting and tweeting, they tend not to vote or care about a single topic longer than it trends. Plus the best thing about college students is that they get older, a lot of millennial's (me included) are in their mid 30's with some approaching 40. It's easy to be a self righteous radical when you are a young liberal arts student, but eventually they will grow up and either move towards the center and become gainfully employed or a creepy old person who is always broke and no one takes seriously. However, the right has remained cohesive and just crazy enough to get what they want done but not crazy enough to show their true colors. That's why they are so dangerous.

How do these people plan to be equipped for life outside of campus if they can't even take a joke about anything?! The faculty is actually doing the students a disservice by shielding them from everything remotely controversial. What happens when they graduate? They going to want trigger warning from every person they encounter? It's like dumping babies out of the cradle and into the street. I don't remember my college experience being like this, but that was almost a decade ago. Maybe things have changed.

bongo155 but feelings shouldn't matter more than speaking truth to power. If we can't use our words and our art to commentate on the times or critique our leaders than what's the point of free speech? I'm not saying don't listen to marginalized voices when they point out real harm, just saying that it can't be this cut and dry. There needs to be nuance when we talk about painful subjects in comedy.

Having dealt with them online and seen some of their philosophical ideas bandied about, I can say that they can sometimes end up being just as toxic, racist, and sexist as the bigots they purport to oppose. In my experience, casual -isms usually occur out of pure ignorance. If you approach a person who said the thing with empathy as another human being, then explain why the thing they said was wrong, the vast majority of empathetic humans would learn something new and change their behavior. Unfortunately, the SJW often starts with an insult, tells the other person to shut up because they're not a member of [protected non-privileged group] and therefore don't understand--but no, I don't have to explain it to you. Basically, they shut down conversations that need to happen for any progress to be made, are just as locked up in identity as the bigots, and do little of the work that needs to be done to advance their causes.
This does not, of course, excuse the racists, sexists, and bigots. I just think that we need to be able to have these conversations with each other, stop retreating to our bubbles and reach out to one another as humans. This "other"ing is dangerous for our society because while we agree on at least 70% of our values, we're letting that 30% divide us so much that our government has ceased to function as it should. It used to be we could actually find our common ground and work from there. Now it's all talking past each other to see who can score the most political points. When societies cease seeing their neighbors as neighbors and start seeing them as enemies... that's when civil unrest and genocide happens.
