    Beaches being raked in Soviet Union is not a myth. I have seen it. To be fair, i have seen the result not the process itself. So i don't know the actual purpose or if it was done by men in uniform. But realistically, what other purpose could it have served? Considering the paranoia of the time i find it plausible even if hardly useful. Even as a kid i was wondering "but what if the spy rakes the sand behind himself?"

    I am French. I am an aviation fan and I went several times to Lynkjoping where I had the privilege to see this bird for real. What a beast. Raw power, beautiful. I miss it. Too bad it was hanging up out of reach in the ceiling of the museum and too dark in winter to see the other one outside. Never mind, I also visited the goteborg museum too. I love the Saab aircrafts. Viggen and Draken flew almost every day in the area at low altitude and also over the village so the houses shook. a pilot flew over the paper mill between the chimney and a building.
    Could tell many memories from that time.
    There are also sad memories where they flew over a croft outside the village and scared rabbits they had out so they died from the supersonic bang when they flew over.

    Many years ago (yeah, it sorta sucks getting old even though the alternative is way worse) I was told a story by a friends dad (the dad being ex Swedish Airforce pilot) about a picture taken from a Viggen.
    The picture only showed some blurry grey construction against a clear blue sky.
    Apparently the grey stuff was the underside of the bridge between the island of Öland and the main land. Picture had been taken by the Viggens spy cam while the pilot was flying the plane on its back under the bridge.
    If true or not I do not know. But I do know there were some crazy pilots back then.

    • @larss337
      @larss337 Před 4 lety +7

      Actually, as far as I know this happened at F21 in the 1960s. The plane was a J29 "Tunnan" that flew upside down under the bridge at Luleviken. Allegedly the plane was piloted by the head of the reconnaissance squadron. He was ordered to take pictures of the bridge during a exercise. Apparently, thinking that this menial task was somewhat beneath him he decided to spice it up a bit by flying upside down under the bridge with the cameras running. I was told, in 1978, that the pictures were still with the reconnaissance squadron but I never saw them.

    • @MIPousette
      @MIPousette  Před 11 měsíci

      SwAF QRA has historically mainly been carried out with armed canons. On JA37 it's a built in 30mm Oerlikon canon. Swedish radars see all the way across the Baltic Sea, hence the QRA already has a pretty good idea of what to expect before they take off. As I understand, the reason why QRA by standard is not fully equipped with A2A missiles is because the intention is not to come across as aggressive and provocative. The intention is to mark presence and to document for intelligence purposes.
      As an example, when U137 ran aground and got stuck in 1981, there was a lot of movement/activity on the Sovjet side. At F13 (and probably other air wings as well) you had everyone in high-alert. Jerry told me they were a four-ship on the runway, fully loaded out, engines running, following the developments across the radio. Luckily, tension de-escalated and they were never launched against any attacking sovjet forces.
      The point is, configuration and load-out was based on the threat and situation.

    Viggen was a beast.. i really like to fly it in DCS - i wonder why it never was exported, but i guess the US were involved (deal regarding the engine or smth i heard) it would have outclassed many planes out there.. and also the Draken (just compare it to the crappy Starfighter... Draken was as fast und just better in every other aspect)

    So cool to see the ghost (czcams.com/video/kBq5qA8r4dA/video.html) on the cars from Koenigsegg today. It's because they are built in what used to be the old hangar of the Swedish air force’s Johan Röd squadron. Nice video I enjoyed it!

    One of the best fighters of the era, unfortunately underrated because of retarded export restrictions. It was slightly superior to the Mirage F1 that did very well in the export market.

      I doubt the Viggen would’ve done well in export, as it is extremely specialized to it’s role in the Swedish Air Defense network. Other nations would have to extensively modify the airframe to their needs.

      Frankly Frank not entirely correct. Even the J35 Draken was in service until mid 80’s. AJ, SH &SF37 was supplied 1970-1980 & JA37 1980-1990 tot 329 built . Mid 1980’s 54 of J35 Draken where upgraded from F to J- version (new systems & weapons), and these where retired 1998. Viggen was fully retired by 2005
