      I've been doing yoga at home for a year to CZcams videos. I just skip sitting cross-legged, because it hurts so much. Today, I thought I'd see if there was any video to help remedy this situation. I found your video and I can't believe I was able to follow along and by the end sit cross-legged! Thank you. I'll return to practice this every few days.

    I just recently started trying this and I must say, I'm shocked that it's going really really well. You see, I have Stage 3 Osteoarthritis in my left knee and Stage 2 Osteoarthritis in my right knee. I didn't have a lot of faith in this stuff but it actually works! I use this video along with the "How to sit on heels" one that you have. This is amazing! (1) the voice is soooooo soothing, (2) the postures are easily accessible and this works well with me, (3) the overall ambiance is just so relaxing!!!!! My flexibility has GREATLY increased because of this! My question is this: do you have anything on hip adductors because now I'm after butterfly pose and getting my knees on the ground. Thank you so so so so much!

    • @YogawithJoelle
      @YogawithJoelle  Před 2 lety

      Thanks so much for the lovely comment, so glad you enjoy practicing together and well done for your consistency! For working towards butterfly we need both openness in the inner hamstrings and adductors as well as strength in the hips and glutes. Here's a few practices for you to try: adductors (czcams.com/video/jEE-D7sTNpk/video.html), glutes (czcams.com/video/kZS3N82vG7c/video.html), and a quick little flow looking at different versions of butterfly (czcams.com/video/uahGMnSqt14/video.html). Hi Joelle. Thanks for this and many other videos. The only point I would like to mention is that I believe (stretching, not yoga experience much) that those poses you are showing are great but the duration of some of the poses are not long enough to provide flexibility (over the time), but rather warm up or stretch a bit. I honestly had to adjust the speed of the video to 0.5 so that each session will bring me further and further as I am very stiff and in cross-legged position my knees are pointing upwards a lot. Thank you again!

    • @YogawithJoelle
      @YogawithJoelle  Před 3 lety

      Welcome Jennifer, so happy to have you with us! Good question on sitting back on the heels - does it feel like the reason that's difficult is because of a limitation in the ankle flexibility? That's probably the most common reason, although it can sometimes also be due to tight hip flexors or other reasons, too. You might like to try my foot pain practice (czcams.com/video/9GiLEupJq40/video.html) - even if you aren't having foot pain, that will work to help strengthen the areas all around the ankle, which may just not be used to working the way they should. The first few deep stretches of my yin yoga for runners practice (czcams.com/video/Sxeo6clGLBk/video.html) would also be wonderful ones to work on regularly, and holding them longer will get to working on loosening the joints, rather than the muscles thinking that they need to "protect" you in postures that aren't as common for your body. I hope that helps!! 🍀

    Hi Joelle, I hope you’re having a good trip. I revisited this routine after a long time. Although I meditate daily, it’s good to brush up on the basics. One question I have is regarding the seiza posture using a kneeling stool. I usually find that I can’t stand up right away after my sit without buckling down. Which exercises can I use to this help along. Thanks and stay safe on your travel.

    • @YogawithJoelle
      @YogawithJoelle  Před 3 lety

      Wonderful Larry! Totally agree about getting back to basics once in a while. I haven't personally used a kneeling stool, but my first thought would be whether there may be some limitation in the ankles or knees after you've been seated for a while and they just need a little time to wake back up? I'm pretty sure you've tried my knee pain routine already, but maybe have a look at the ankle mobility one if you haven't already (czcams.com/video/7ZHjiBFRws0/video.html) and see if you like any of the exercises there?

    Thank you for such a lovely sequence. I used to sit on the floor on my left side with both legs folded to the right side for more than 40 years. Now I try to meditate cross-legged, my right knee would not settle down and the outside of my right foot where it touches the ground is numb and painful after even a short meditation. I also cannot put my right leg in front of the left because that would make my posture even more awkward and even harder to have my back straight. I've got targeted practices for all these different areas on my channel, so if you use the search function on my channel homepage (the little magnifying glass), you should be able to find what you need. @YogawithJoelle  Před rokem

      That's amazing well done you! 🙌 And those are terrific goals Trish! Legs stacked is often called Firelog pose (or sometimes Square pose), and it's actually a variation of pigeon (some people also call it Double Pigeon), so I'd recommend trying out the pigeon practice as it'll really help with external rotation of your hips : czcams.com/video/CdQ007-2NG4/video.html It'll also help build some strength to stand up from the floor. But these are great ideas for future videos, thank you!

      You're welcome! Unfortunately it's tough to say exactly how long progress can take, as it's different for every body depending on the starting point and where the specific limitations are. But definitely expect for your body to become more used to feeling "safe" in these positions with regular practice. If you feel like there's a specific part of your body that's holding you back (for example, knees or hips), you might also like to alternate or add on another one of the 10-minute sequences linked in the description box below the video. I hope that helps, and good for you for being consistent! 👍

Generally speaking, getting a little blood flow and movement back into the legs and hips tends to be quite helpful after sitting for a long time. Here are a couple suggested practices to get you started depending on your priorities: knee pain (czcams.com/video/ulOwPW9b6Cs/video.html), legs up the wall (czcams.com/video/cICYAEAgVbs/video.html), calves (czcams.com/video/M2XcfOy-uQI/video.html), feet and ankles (czcams.com/video/cmRykuBQNtw/video.html) Each of these is only about 10 minutes - let me know how you get on! 😊

      Good question! It's hard to say exactly what causes tingling sometimes, but good that you're not pushing into any pain. My best guess is that the feet are just not used to being in this position or to bearing any weight in this way, so bringing a bit more mobility into them, as well as into the ankles, could be helpful. Maybe try my foot pain practice (czcams.com/video/9GiLEupJq40/video.html) to see if it feels doable or see which stretches/moves your feet may respond to the most.

    Thank you for this video. I haven't sat cross legged since being a very little girl due to a knee injury aged 6 my knee used to lock and swell so the teachers let me off from crossing my legs at school. Ironically my knee is less the problem now than my hips probably from spending from very young childhood not doing things that set off my knee with the exception of cycling because the dr said I'd never be able to ride a bike so I stubbornly learnt and rode it everywhere although I did pay for it at times. I'm getting pain around the very top of my leg I'm sorry I don't know what its called but its where full briefs would sit on your leg sorry for the description I can't think of another way of describing it. Its not unbearable and stopped when I'd done the move just leaving a little heat and a little pain in the joint or muscles I mentioned. Is that a normal part of stretching it out? I have fibromyalgia and can get severe pain there so I'm a little scared to flare it up. Any advice would be appreciated thank you. I've been doing your supine hip and bursitis pain and neck pain videos (but I sit on a chair) for a while now though unfortunately got out of the habit the last 6 weeks with being busy in my business. I've decided I need to spend some time on self care to be in less pain and also better in my business and I love your videos as I can do some of them without it involving twisting myself into a pretzel which is a bit beyond me lol.       @@YogawithJoelle hi last time I did this video I wasn't really in any pain to begin with in my hips and legs ect and managed all of it. Since then I've been really poorly the shivering in bed kind (not because of yoga I had a throat infection and another vaccination together making me really ill). Anyway because of the lack of activity no walking outside or yoga with being so ill and probably made worse by the shivering my fibromyalgia flared up and my right hip and thigh was in almost unbearable pain. I've already taken pain killers about 5 hours ago which I don't like to and vary rarely do and I was still in a lot of pain and they barely took the edge off when they were working. Anyway after doing all my own physio excercises that sometimes work because I was in bed and I remembered them and applying heat I was still in a lot of pain. I didn't feel up to doing the full hip pain video as I'm still pretty unwell and weak but I remembered some of these excercises felt really good on my hips and thighs like they were releasing something a bit stuck if that makes sense. So I've come downstairs and gone through this video doing the ones that don't cause pain but not doing the ones that did because I'm already really bad I couldn't do quite as much and the pain has mostly gone. Apparently my hips like my legs pretending to be window wipers among other things lol. Its now 12.50am and I'm really hoping I will be able to sleep now the pain has eased. You probably know how powerful it is, having fibromyalgia yourself but you wouldn't believe how powerful it is for me to do a few pretty simple movements from your videos and that work better for my pain than strong dr prescribed pain killers that I never usually take so I usually just suffer through with the typical british stiff upper lip saying I'm fine when I'm not.       I'm not sure what exactly is it you're feeling, but I would say if it's actual PAIN, that is never "normal." If it's more of a tingly sensation, that can just be that the body isn't used to a certain position and needs time to understand what it's trying to do. In the meantime, I suggest shortening the hold time in that position and really identifying which areas seem to be holding you back so you can target them a little more specifically.     I’m so embarrassed to be here. I’m 28 almost 29 and I’ve “w” sat almost my entire life. I spent my entire childhood moving and being relocated and fostered that nobody ever really caught on or ever said anything about it being wrong. It makes me so angry and sad honestly. Because now I have horrible posture and can hardly do the basics here and I’m generally a decently fit person but I’m really struggling. Because of my inverted sitting, I have awkward knees and don’t even know if it’s safe for me to try to correct as an adult because I probably “grew” into this posture. My hips basically invert in and I have zero lower back strength. It’s kept me from dancing and hula hooping, two things I super love doing, but I look so awkward and gangly and without a good base, I end up getting hurt a lot. I feel so frustrated and existentially distraught about it ;--;

      @YogawithJoelle  Před 2 lety +1

      Nothing to be embarrassed about! We're all in different bodies with different starting points. Give yourself a chance and see how you do, but always "listen" to how your body feels without pushing anything that doesn't feel right.

    • @YogawithJoelle
      @YogawithJoelle  Před 2 lety

      Hi Jayson, happy to provide some other options if some of these don't work for your body. If sleeping pigeon is inaccessible, try knee-over-knee instead of ankle-over-knee. What you're looking for is a stretch in the outer hip. I encourage you to examine your own assumptions about "yoga people" - Yoga is for everyone, but every body is different and it's always my aim to help as many people as possible. Let me know if there are order postures you need an alternative for.
