Depth of Speed was born from a desire of story, travel, and a love of anything automotive related. Next year my wife and I will be taking to the streets to uncover and document the greatest stories from the automotive world. From coast-to-coast and from top to bottom, finding the best stories will take the highest priority. Every time I meet someone new or attend an event I amazed at the depth, passion, and love that the automotive world brings. Depth of Speed is just that, an in-depth look at these stories. There is something about motors and machines, that to an outsider looking in, would make us seem plain crazy.
We have begun the process of outfitting our trusty Scamp trailer to traverse the entire country. Known affectionately as a fiberglass egg, our Scamp will be our home for one year of our lives. At only 13 feet long it will make for a cozy year.
Episode two of Depth of Speed takes us to pinstriping shop of Andy Kawahara. Known succinctly as Andy's Pinstriping, his craft is a true unification of art and automotive. Josh Clason speaks with Andy regarding why he loves pinstriping and how the old crowd has embraced the artform. While most will unanimously agree, the art of pinstriping much like sign painting is a dying breed due to the vinyl industry but with that comes glimmers of hope.

Dude, I'm so glad that people like you are keeping the art form alive. From what I've seen your talent speak volumes. I've known pinstripers and sign painters of note who've long since died and their talent has gone with them.... your works have shown that the spirit and creativity endures. Thank you.
I wouldn't put vinyl on a wheelbarrow! Painted or nothing...Beautiful work pal...
Go get'em Andy!!
Hope you're going well

It's a fading art that's for sure. When I first go started 50 some years ago, I watched a pinstriper/sign painter and made it look easy, so I figured if he can do it, I can...and I did!
I have been doing this for about a year now. I’m 63 years old and retired. I always wanted to learn how to pinstripe I have been custom painting for about 10 years . Metal flakes , candy paint and gold leafing along with some other forms of painting. It’s really relaxing and a lot of fu. It does take time. Learning how to pallet the paint different ways. Hopefully I can keep it up.
Im a 20 year old striper... I guess I represent the next generation. Its a true art with an emphasis on accuracy and skill.
Awesome stuff
Gotta respect a real artist
Very nice movie! I practiced for a year now
The soul is in this Art. Have you consider teaching? You are right is not the money for been money, but to keep this Art alive. Thanks
true art
i really want to pinstripe now
Nice video, try the M/C and hot rod show circuit nationwide for a while, you may find it very interesting...
You guys have awesome background music on all your videos. Where do you find this genre of music??
where is Andy the pinstriper?
looks difficult. I wonder if they ever mess up a paint job
You just wipe it off if you dont like it
willkilla ya I’m constantly messing up paint jobs, but they keep on hiring me back, even catch them on fire every so often, but hey we all mess up ..so what , WHEN DO YOU HAVE TO BE BACK AT THE HOME .?
Once he said "you can't have a computer do it" I was just like, "you wait and see. I'll build a robot to replace you! I'll build a robot to replace everybody!"
You're not very encouraging to beginners of course you can't do it the first try it takes years and years of practice
Man... he's full of himself.
Could be full of shit like yourself.
