There are 9 "realms" (aka worlds) that are linked (magically?) Asgard is the highest, Hel is the lowest ruled by the Giant Demon Surtur, Satanic Red with Horns and all.
Earth is Midgard, a place for the Gods to play and learn and guide humans and the other sentient races of earth. The other 8 realms orbit Midgard, and all are mystically linked by the Tree of Worlds, called Yggrassil. Yotenheim was the home of the Frost Giants, and Nidavellir is the home of the Dwarves. Svartalfheim was the home of the Elves, but they were all wiped out long ago.
Finally Vanaheim is the home of cousins of the Asgardians, the Vanir , a race of similar beings but less advanced in technology, more into nature. Frigga, Odin's wife comes from the Vanir line, as does Hogun, "The Jackie Chan guy".

One of the things that almost noone gets is what happened at the climax battle in Puente Antiguo, New Mexico. Thor died. He sacrificed himself for the lives of his friends. Being now worthy, the power of Thor once again restored his life and awakened his Divine Form, as The Mighty Thor, God of Thunder.
Another thing that is for MCU geeks only --- The Battle of Puente Antiguo takes placed on the same day as the Battle at Culver University, Virginia ( The Incredible Hulk 2008) -- June 2, 2010.
So does the Assault on Asgard by the Frost Giants in Asgard, and the Battle for the Throne of Asgard ( Thor vs Loki) on the Rainbow Bridge.
Erik Selvig is Jane Foster's Professor, and he grew up with the Old Norse Mythology tales of Odin, Loki, Thor, and more. So that's a nice coincidence that he was there. Selvig was also at Culver University when Bruce Banner was a teacher there, and they exchanged theories about Gamma radiation.
