- A deadly pileup on a Louisiana highway was caused by "super fog" that knocked visibility to below 10 feet. Two people were killed in a series of multi-car pileups on Interstate 55, northwest of New Orleans.
LiveNOW's Austin Westfall spoke about the dense fog and the deadly crash with FOX's Bowen Kedrowicz.

If you can't see more than 5 seconds in front of you, you're going too fast; no matter the speed limit.
You’d think it would be common sense
You woukd travel about 520 feet in 5 seconds at 70 mph.
‘Super Fog’ didn’t cause this, driving too fast for conditions and human error caused this.
Slow down when it’s foggy.
What source do you have? I can't find info on specifics of fog (appears suddenly?); how fast traffic was going...
@@eddiel2911🤡🤡
So a clear day caused the pileup if there was no fog? Just all those drivers crashing into each other huh
@@abbymonroe929 he's saying if ppl would drive according to weather they wont crash their vehicles you muppet
@@eddiel2911this fog was from nearby marsh fires it wasn't a natural fog. You can find the article online.
I'll never understand why people keep driving when they can't see in front of them...
It's because they never got a real driver's license.
@@BSnicksi'd second that and say some people just tripped into adulthood on accident
In my mid 70s I see that the masses tailgate and drive at 80 mph and it goes on everywhere. You said it perfectly - why would they drive when they can't see. One would think they would at least SLOW DOWN and move to the right lanes and even the shoulder. But the speeding and tailgating goes on everywhere and it is not IQ related.
If you are on a freeway and the next exit is not for miles, what else are you supposed to do? Pulling over on the shoulder is even more dangerous if people can't see.
Stupidity!!!
FOR THOSE NOT AWARE, BE SURE TO SLOW DOWN IN FOG AND INCLIMATE WEATHER
Inclimate *
MY BAD DO BETTER NEXT TIME@@colleenpeck6347
And TURN ON YOUR BLINKERS!
Once, I drove in heavy rain. I could barely see anything 5 ft ahead. Still, some idiots behind me drove so close, that he almost tailgated me. I guess that genius thought, that if he drove that close, he would at least see my car. LOL
That would require people to have some common sense, that has pretty much disappeared these days, even among older people.
It's like people's minds are gone . The zombie apocalypse lol bunch of total morons.
you misspelled "driving too fast for the conditions"
That's insane. Like a final destination scene.
Yep
The log from the truck😟😔😔😔
Sure blame the fog and not the bad drivers.
slow down...run headlamps on low beam and by all means...turn on your hazard flashers. People have no clue how to drive these days
Ironic since you're not supposed to turn your hazards on in poor weather, only when you're pulled over on the shoulder. In fact, it's illegal in most states.
You don’t have rear fog lamps on cars in the us?
Safer, to switch on your car's rear fog light, if equipped.

SAE J1319. Not as standard, purely optional. Can't create market demand when folk don't know they exist.
Fog alone, shouldn’t cause a catastrophic crash like this. It’s either negligence, speeding, no lights or tail lights working. What I always do when I encounter severe fog is put my four-way flashers on and slow down to it, accommodate how far you can see your ahead. 99.9% of the time it’s either human error or a mistake that causes these type of accidents.
The sad thing about it is people die because of it 😢
Hazard-warning lamps are globally reserved for crash scenes and breakdowns.
USA is much better advised to follow Europes lead and mandate the REAR FOG LAMP function.
Rear fog light function offers many seconds additional warning over a cars other taillight functions.
Its used in thick fog, torrential daylight rainfall, in blizzards, dust-storms, bushfire smoke, gravel roads.
SAE J1319 is US Recommended Practice. To mandate, it needs to be carried into FMVSS-108.
Seems avoidable
Wow.... it's as if drivers never learn.
What a calamity.
Omg this happened in Canada, exact same situation in 1999. On my way to work the fog came out of nowhere and there were multiple casualties. So very scary! Sending prayers and condolences to the families! 🙏🏼🛐🙏🏼
I-55 I drove few times, also on I-10 from east to west to N.O from Florida , always foggy in morning hours & must be very careful
This never happened when Drivers could stop their time and get off the road without hurting your drive time and hours of Service. Also Drivers avoided massive pile ups when we used out CB's. We were able to stop traffic slowing down at a pace people would be able ro slow and stop without 80,000 pounds slamming in to people one after another.
They were probably rushing to get paid for having their kids raped like the rest of the south
You cannot see anything in some situations and stop the car and walk away would kill you easily. Because other cars are in the same situation, in a complete blindness. It was really scary. But get out of the car is suicide!!!!!!
@guyintenn I retired in 2009. Also besides much more traffic and yes so many distractions today. Let's just say with Technology it is easier to get News from a broader range and speed than years ago. I just don't remember like 90 car Vehicle pile ups. Today it seems to be much more common. Stay safe Driver. Pray everyday for the Driver's out on the chaos Highways.
@@guyintennFog did not cause any crashes and never has, people driving inappropriately for the conditions cause crashes
There was a dust storm that caused a deadly pile up on I-55 in Illinois earlier this year. If I remember right 8 people died.
I recall that sudden ice in Texas where all those cars were just smashing each other and couldn't even slow down
Prayers for everyone out there in that crash.
Did..😂.. did you..🤭 did you actually do it? 🤣🤣
@alexandriaraine3802 you a goofy

Below 10 feet? That's some Stephen King Mist there.
Where the wreck started at, this statement is kinda true. I would say about 30 to 50 feet when you were walking in it.
Local news so far reports 7 fatalities and at least 30 injuries
some people won’t slow down even when they can’t see anything!! these are the people who cause these accidents 😡
People always want more lanes to reduce traffic instead of breakdown lanes
I take I55 around 9 most days to get to work on weekdays, but I have COVID so I didn't head out. Ironic how things pan out, my gf had no idea I was sick since I just went back to bed, and she called me in a panic
A crash happened like this about 2 months ago in Illinois on the same expressway I-55 due to fog
ZERO visibility= keep driving anyway
Always in fog and snow and rain. Put on your hazard lights they are brighter than brake lights! Will save a lot of people if you remember to do this and slow
down!
Often an illegal practice in several states. Pull off and stop if you can’t see. THEN the hazard lights
Wrong. You're not supposed to turn your hazard lights in poor weather. It just adds to the confusion on the road.
honestly, there could have been 30 or 40 fatalities from this.
When you saw the crashes and cars, it was a grace of God that more people didn't die
Had the sun in my eyes going east bound on a congested freeway this morning, couldn't see a thing, very dangerous.
If u can’t see with the sun in your eyes, try closing them. Your welcome.
@@tinawindham6958 never thought of that, idiot.
IM SO SORRY ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED BUT WHY PEOPLE KEPT DRIVING 😢
Probably too busy worrying about making women carry their rapists babies
Why wasn't the highway closed with a detour? The highway safety commission was negligent. They knew about the super fog caused by nearby brush fires.
I live in a different section of Louisiana and at the same time where I was this happened. I went in store was no fog got an energy shot came out to a dense fog Was very odd
I’m not from this area but I did drive this freeway a few times when I had to work in New Orleans….I remember every Buba in a pickup was flying down this road. It’s like NASCAR on that bridge….a pile up like this is long long overdue…God bless all
“Bubba’s” are from Texas not Louisiana.

@@Noone765I guess forest gump was wrong then?
And it is a crying shame that other parts of this nation are going to be chain reaction accidents due to ice on the roads and people not knowing how to drive on icy roads.
Whatever the speed limit is on that bridge, they need to lower it substantially.
I remember going thru a blanket of fog and it is so scary
Turn your hazard lights on and slow down to about 5 miles per hour if you cannot safely pull of the road and stop. If need be honk your horn twice every five minutes.
Dont slow down, vision is over rated, you OWN the road.
This is terrible. Prayers for all involved.
Why would you pray for unamerican traitors?
I can't see, but let me go 60mph 😢.. I pray everyone is ok
"Can't see 5 ft in front of my car, better keep driving"! 😂
Super fog? Wth kind of headline is that? Ridiculous
We here in Miami, FL had this 2 years ago and i was driving home from work but this was around 3 - 4am in the morning. No traffic..
THAT IS ONE OF MY BIGGEST NIGHTMARES! BEING IN A PILEUP LIKE THAT! I DRIVE A SMALL CAR SO I'D INSTANTLY BE KILLED! 💔 😭
Looks like some drivers kept driving at high speeds in fog.
Some of them were probably the people that honk and flash their lights when I do even the speed limit in horrible weather.
Driving too close , tailgating.
how can you be tailgating if you can't see the car in front of you?
It was the fog. Not a bunch of reckless truck drivers operating giant oversized vehicles. That mean ol fog smashing cars....
i used to drive with my mobile phone camera on when there’s a denser fog. for some reason the fog doesn’t get picked up on the camera.
Prayers for all

Commercial bosses are going to hold you guys accountable. May cost several points. It's your fault."Driving too fast for conditions." I hope y'all don't lose your CDL. Better to pull off and wait. But you know now. Sorry.
Man, there’s not even any snow or rain/hail 🌨️⛈️ in this area and this type of accident already happened. Something tells me this is going to be a very bad winter 🥶 sometimes being a over the road truck driver 🚛is no fun
That's so sad I pray no children were involved
That was 90 percent wildfire tbh. That fog was barely noticeable
Strange that these kind of accidents only seem to occur in the US. Better educating drivers might be a step forward.
“Super fog” more like negligent steering wheel holders without CB radios. If there’s zero visibility you have no business being out unless it’s an emergency.
Isn't there a camera up somewhere?
This was not caused by the fog, this was caused by driving too fast to see to stop and tailgating.
So no one had the common sense to drive slow with emergency lights on?
D UM BASSES
RIP to the 2 that died.
when a dense fog hits the road, u slow down to a crawl, put on ur low beams & look for the brake lights in front of u. if u can pull over on a shoulder or make the next exit. people drive way too fast & r on auto pilot. theyre zoned out, on the phone, sleepy, dui, distracted, etc..ur powering 3000 lbs or more of a killing machine & ur also surrounded by idiots on the road. enforce the speed limit/lower it. more traffic cops & stiffer penalties for repeat offenders. people are killing people w/ their vehicles. every day i scould count at least 20 drivers i could catch w/ speeding, dangerous driving, etc on the highway i use.
What about self driving cars ?
That has happened before but it wasn't fog
Terrible
Why they don't lower the speed when there's fog 🌫️???
how do you know many cars didn't lower their speed? It seems many/most would.
People NOT driving to the conditions. SMH
This is crazy, it is simply people driving carelessly. Everywhere I go, I see people driving this same way- too fast, tailgating, no signaling, angry speeding with others who are abiding the speed limits. People are so selfish and simply "STUPID". I truly feel sad for the responsible drivers who were sucked into this mess
keep ure distance towards the vehicle before u. the 3 second rule is a good way too use
Revoke everyone's license in Louisiana. Clearly none of them know how to drive in foggy situations.
Assault vehicles?
amazing that people just dont slow down
The local sheriff is a liar and a racist. He knows the roads are dangerous during fog and did nothing to protect motorists on the dangerous highway.
No one is above Phyicis.
I always drive at safe speeds in dangerous conditions as other cars fly past me at high rates of speed and get into all sorts of preventable accidents.
And yes, I will call Lousiana Sheriff a racist and tell it to his face.
When people ignore the lizard brain and forget they arent invincible and more goes on than what's in their bubble
There is no excuse for rear ending anything in the fog... you are driving too fast for the conditions.. simple as that...
😮😮😮😮😮So sad...i pray for all the people in the accident!
No surprise at all because of the speeds people are running at.(truckers included) Everyone is in a big hurry to go nowhere.
All of this could have been avoided road close signs
And everyone still wants to go 70 during bad weather..
Smoke + Fog = Super Fog?!?
If only we had a name for that we'd been using for over 100 years. Hmm, let's go with the "Sm" + the "og." You do the rest, FOX.
Smog is a totally different thing though

The scariest thing about driving is the fact that not only do we have to rely on ourselves but we also have to rely on others. There’s no reason why people should have died in this situation. If you cannot see in front of you drive with CAUTION AND SLOW DOWN make sure you put on your 4-ways so you can be as visible as possible. Get from A to B safely people.
I don’t know, but if you can’t see, don’t drive.
Should lowkey take licenses but it would be impossible to know which people wernt being cautious
That woman is the epitome of Louisiana lol
'reckless driving caused deadly crash and massive pileup in foggy conditions' there i fixed your headline for you
Wow...
Just another reason why I don't want to go to the South. That is a LOT of horrible drivers! I guess they don't teach proper distance in the South.
Why are there wildfires in Louisiana? One of the wettest places on planet Earth? Nobody but me finds this peculiar? Same with Hawaii. I'm not buying it 🙄
Real is FAKE and fake is a dream..Video can be altered , pics also , audio made up , Believe very little and fact check EVERYTHING
Educate yourself. Google is your friend.
Why has West Maui become so dry? What caused wildfires in Louisiana? Just a couple tips for you to start 😉.
It's climate change you numbskull.
. By law and the number One rule is slow down and turn On the emergency flashing lights. That's the only way make others see you!!!!!
I learned that years ago trapping in a dense fog for miles, like driving a car with a white bedsheet covering the windshield. Suddenly I approached a line of flashing emergency lights from Cars in front, I realized all the cars behind should see flashing lights instead of the beam or regular light. These cars in front of me probably are locals and they used to the foggy weather that occurs often during wet cold days.
Never stop the car and walk out of it. That's suicide!!!!
Bet nobody slowed down!
I can't find anything reported on how fast the cars were going. What did you find?
@eddiel2911 I didn't look into it cause it's not my problem, but being a trucker for 7 years or so, I can say the probability of some people speeding unreasonably in the circumstances is incredibly high, I've personally seen it in every single state.
Streets and highways should have been closed and employers should have understood. Lives and injuries could have been avoided. SMH 🤦♂️
Bad driver education, that’s seems to be non existent in the US, would maybe help people with some common sense. Slower speeds and use of rear fog lights.
Bridges over water, is a common place for fog. How much money is spend on infrastructure? Digital signs that can display a more dynamic speed for the prevailing conditions.
katrina evacuee here - LA-DOT is a joke, this happens EVERY YEAR this month without fail - and they don't even put down positioning reflectors on the roads there - or remind drivers to turn their lights on/slow down during such conditions - they all drive like hillbillies late for a shotgun wedding. and yes, they have 24 hr bars there, so add that into the mix. One of the most backward run states in the US.
All the articles I’m seeing says it came out of nowhere and most people were already on the highway AFTER it started? Why are people making it sound like these people just woke up, saw it was foggy out, said ‘oh?’ got ready for work, and just blindly dove into a pile of cars?
RIP to the Souls lost 😢. Sending Prayers for all affected
When getting in this situation, drive slowly and TURN On the Emergency FLASH Light!!!!. Regular lights including the beam are not making you visible by others. They should teach people how to handle when getting trapped in fog
🙏 for all affected by this tradegy, in Jesus holy name, Amen!
Common sense isn't so common anymore.
People need to slow down and use extreme caution when there is fog, or heavy rain. You may crawl at a snail's pace, but you'll make it, and your car will still be in one piece ! Stop driving like the back of your car is on fire. And stop playing "Me first" while driving like a bat out of h@ll ! It's not worth it !
This just in: Deadly war caused by irreoncilable differences. No humans involved.
Like mosquitoes to the zap light 😒😒😒 let drive in zero visibility. I hope the insurance companies dont pay a single penny ..even health insurance companies. Stop paying for stupidity.
Even the most prepared can get into trouble with quick changes in the weather, however...........
If I were one of the Troopers there, I would be subpoenaing phone records to ensure no one contributed to this mess by texting or playing games on their phone while driving (yes, I have seen people playing video games while driving.) It is bad enough when a few vehicles pile into each other, it is worse when you have either the initial vehicle or one farther into the pack that has a severely reduced reaction time when their attention is divided - 60mph is 88 feet per second, and I doubt anyone has even half that between vehicles at speed. 60mph down to zero is harsh even in five seconds in good conditions.
BTW: Phone calls are more difficult to prove, as many now have speaker phone apps right in the vehicle.
Fog didn’t cause this collision. Lack of appropriate driving behavior did.
I only came to see this to gloat over all the morons who treat the road like their personal playground. One of the cardinal rules in every driver handbook is to not overdrive your headlights (etc). When you begin to approach thick fog like this, be an adult and plan ahead or pay the price for you lack of vision....literally. I see fog rolling in, I get off the highway because people are idiots.
Idiotic people driving way faster than safe for conditions. In fog like that people, shouldn't be going over like 15.
