Nazareth was formed in December 1968 in Dunfermline, Scotland, out of the ashes of semi-professional local group The Shadettes (formed in 1961) by vocalist Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton (ex Mark V and The Red Hawks), bassist Pete Agnew, and drummer Darrell Sweet.[2] They took their name from the first line of The Band's classic song "The Weight" ("I pulled into Nazareth / Was feelin' about half past dead...")[2]. Nazareth's cover version of "Java Blues" by The Band's bassist/singer Rick Danko and Emmett Grogan is on their 1981 live album Snaz.
The band moved to London, England in 1970, and released their eponymous debut album in 1971.[2] After getting some attention with their second album Exercises, released in 1972, Nazareth supported Deep Purple on tour, and issued the Roger Glover produced, Razamanaz, in early 1973.[2] This collection spawned two UK Top Ten hits, "Broken Down Angel" and "Bad Bad Boy".[2] This was followed by Loud 'N' Proud in late 1973, which contained another hit single with a hard-rocking cover of Joni Mitchell's song "This Flight Tonight".[2] Then came another album Rampant, in 1974, that was equally successful although its only single, "Shanghai'ed in Shanghai", narrowly missed the British Top 40.[3] A non-album song, again a cover version, this time of Tomorrow's "My White Bicycle", was a UK Top 20 entry in 1975.[2]
Hair of the Dog was released in April 1975.[3] The title track of that album (popularly, though incorrectly, known as "Son Of A Bitch" due to its chorus lyrics) became a staple of 1970s rock radio. The American version of the album included a song originally recorded by The Everly Brothers, and also covered by Roy Orbison, the melodic ballad "Love Hurts", that was released as a hit single in the UK and in the U.S., where it went platinum. The track became the band's only U.S. Top Ten hit.[4] The song spent a record-shattering 60 weeks on the Norwegian chart.[4]
In 1979, second guitarist Zal Cleminson was added to the line-up, remaining for two albums, No Mean City and Malice in Wonderland, and contributing numerous compositions.[2] Malice in Wonderland produced a popular AOR single called "Holiday".[3] In 1981, they contributed the song "Crazy (A Suitable Case for Treatment)" to the soundtrack to the film, Heavy Metal.
Various Nazareth line-ups continued to make studio albums and tour throughout the 1980s and 1990s, although their popularity had declined such that some albums no longer received either a UK or a U.S. release. They remained popular in Europe, particularly Germany, where "Dream On" became a hit single. Billy Rankin returned for a second spell in the ranks in 1991 for the No Jive album, replacing Manny Charlton who pursued a solo career.[2]
A tribute came in 1993 when Guns N' Roses covered Nazareth's "Hair of the Dog" on "The Spaghetti Incident?", consolation after they turned down Axl Rose's request for the group to play at his wedding.[2] Rankin departed again in 1994, but with Jimmy Murrison and keyboard player Ronnie Leahy, Nazareth maintained a live following in Europe and the U.S.[2]
In 1999, while touring the U.S., original drummer Darrell Sweet died at age 51 of a heart attack. He was replaced by bassist Pete Agnew's son Lee for later editions of the band.
In February 2008, an album was released on the Hamburg based label Edel Entertainment entitled The Newz. The release of the album coincided with Nazareth's fortieth anniversary tour which started on 25 January in Sweden and visited most of Europe, finishing on 4 November 2008 in Norway.

One of my favorite bands. RIP Dan. Coincidently, my name is Dan also.
R.I.P Dan McCafferty.. thank for the music.
one of the best rock voices in history
what voice ??..
He came into the scene a decade before Tom Kiefer's Cinderella & JK Keith's Tesla. He's one of the firsts with the raspy & soaring vocals alongside Rod Stewart.
@@andremoreira2674 a voz que inspirou Brian Johson, do AC/DC, Axel Rose e Bobby Ellsworth, do Overkill, dito pelos próprios.
Aye and the boy of Nazareth are from Dunfermline in Scotland. Its just over the bridge from where I stay. About 30 mins away.
@@Dcey-cy2wc Scotland rules. I hope I'll go there before I reach room temperature…
Danny McCafferty is the influence of many heavy rock and metal singers for a reason. Kick ass vocals.
Strange how it feels high pitched, but it's not that much.
Nope, Deep Purple who would have influenced Nazareth more like. Nazareth weren't a big band more pub rockers. They were more like Free I'd say. Top single & great guitar work.
@@seltaeb9691 Everyone who listens to even slightly decent music loves Nazareth i don't know where you're getting the idea that they're a small band.
Dynamite Dan McCafferty ! Just killing the vocals.
Wow i miss this old crap
First there was Janis then there was Dan, and I'm not being a smartass that's a real compliment
I now right
Dan has left us to play in Heaven's band, and reunite with Daryl Sweet. The growl you can't forget and it made their songs so great.
A band that influenced many later bands yet is seriously underrated !
brilliant, brilliant band, I still love this song as much as I did in 73 when I was 19...that went quick
Damn the 70s ... I hear this and can see myself walking on my parents green shaggy carpet with my big bell bottoms playing my records
Ivante.
The perfect mix of voice / guitar / bass / drums ... amazing rock band !
ДОРОГОЙ НАШ Уильям Дэниел Маккаферти !

The Legend. R. I. P Don.
Bad ass rock n roll!
Rock n Roll can never die!
Charlton was as good as all the top rated guitarists at the time like Blackmore, Lee, Iomi, Beck, Page, Gilmore, Marino, Perry, Winter, Clapton, D Allman, and many more Just listen to him on slide her with Bad Boy he is extrordinary. This group should be in the RRHF without any question Heart got in and Naz still isn't wtf something wrong with that picture. These guys are some of the most creative rock artists that have lived and one of the hardest working groups, rock has ever produced. There style has inspired so many musicians the list is endless.I honor NAZ for what they have given me, through their music. I have so many memories and emotions, peace, love joy, happiness, gratitude, patience not to be in fear and to give life what you got, hope, courage, trust, faith ETC and so much more. These guys are not quitters. What an inspiration they are, to me and all my kids and family. We, love them.We are all looking forward, for them to come back to Western Canada...
I totally agree. This band is really a very good rock n roll band. All their music has such incredible riffs and grooves. They are also very melodic that anyone can sing to. How they are not in the RRHF goes to show what kind of people runs that organization. I don't want to name genres but so many certain genre bands from the 80s and 90s are actually in the RRHF and they're not even Rock n Roll!!!!
of course c maccuswell
Nazareth was very popular in USSR , "It's Naz" 1981 recorded in Vancuver is one of the best live performance at that time. Were you there?
Hi Mikhail, no I wasn't aware of it actually. Not sure how I could have missed that concert.
C maccusweil
-just one thing, fuck the rock n roll hall of fame.
HBD Manuel Charlton! ♥

I heard this song once or twice when I was about 9 or 10 years old and it stuck in my head, nearly 50 years later I decide randomly to search this out on CZcams... wow it didn't disappoint and surpassed my expectations.. can't believe this band weren't more popular, maybe they were?
Nazareth was the first band I heard from my older brothers lp collections that made me know ,if it is not HEAVEY it dont mean squat!
One of my fave guitarist .... Sir Manny Charlton!!!
Neb - the master of slide!
Отличная была вначале группа! Потом когда они перестали сотрудничать с Гловером постепенно скатились в попсу. Но даже за ранние их альбомы им спасибо!
I was a bad bad boy back in the late 70s and early 80s

was already fermenting & about to kick-off even further. It’s Saturday morning & catastrophic hangovers are about to be exacerbated by my cranking-up ‘Woke Up This Morning, My dog was dead...’
But that was what the palliative TISWAS was for...

On of The the Best álbum one clássic bad Boy
Fantastic voice.xx
Rock clássico é rock clássico. ....
How this guy already looked old that time .
Rock n Roll will never die!
Tyler sang in a few groups in the 60's just like Dan,so he has been around as long but Stevens Style wasn't as raw sounding and Bon Scott had a total different sound.Only after Brian Johnson joined the voice style became more raw for ACDC that was 10 years after the amazing sound of Dan's raw power was ever heard. Dan's raw vocal sound, was first to ever be heard in rock as a style, what an amazing style it is.So many have sought it for there own style but only NAZ can claim it as truely being theirs no matter what anybody say's. They own it
RIP. Rok music forever
