- I have a huge amount of respect for all of the artists I cover in today's video regardless fo whether I'm talking about some good or bad art from their career.
I've loved watching the trend of professionals reacting to good and bad things in their own field of work. The Corridor Crew's videos of 'VFX Artists React to Good and Bad Special Effects' is currently my favourite series on youtube (partially because I used to work in special effects). But in general it's always interesting watching well studied professionals talking about their craft. Another particularly fun one has been watching LegalEagle go through court and trial episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. For anyone who hasn't seen the two shows being referenced, here are links to both!

Since I've been a professional illustrator and animator for 7 years now, I figured it'd be fun for me to break down what may have gone very right or very wrong in some of comics best and worst pages and panels. In this episode I break down some classic artwork including the infamous Rob Liefeld Captain America cover with his crazy wonky chest, Jim Lee's aversion to drawing feet, Milo Manara's controversial, busted looking Spider-woman as well as work from Kenneth Rocafort, Greg Capullo, FCO Plascencia, Francis Manapul and Humberto Ramos.
I hope you enjoy and learn a little something about the process of making comic book art from composition, the inking and coloring process or general anatomy. Thanks for watching!

most characters do. Reason being is that tights are easier to draw, because the body begins life with basic anatomy. Its more economical in terms of meeting deadlines than it is to draw actual clothing, because good clothes drawing never looks the same. Muscles and bones don't change much and their changes are predictable. But clothing? Wind, flexing, wet or not, gravity, etc plays a factor in how it is perceived. too much extra work, which is why you find very few characters doing anything seriously dynamic in them.

@@HessianLikeTheFabric Actually yes, because mangas were invented in the late 1800's but most of them were lost and never recovered, however the first ever manga to be serialized began in 1946. The earliest known comic book is called The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck. Originally published in several languages in Europe in 1837. A little history lesson for ya.

As someone who's self taught and knows a few that are as well, if that artist just picked up a few books on anatomy or had a model, he probably would've had better results and awareness.

@@Pdalow self taught, in a grand scheme of things, is a generalization, even art students have to learn on their own, no one's holding their hands afterwards.
I've always thought that Spider man and Spider-woman were SUPPOSED to be "weirdly jointed",attributing to the purposely uncanny positions.
But it has to be in an unrealistic “comicy” art style. If it’s in a realistic art style, it doesn’t work.

Spiderman is known for his ability to compensate for injured muscles/Bones with his awkward forms.

Its not Jim Lee who has issues with feet, its Rob Leifeld, theres proof of that. When Liefeld does draw feet they look weird
Pick up any Marvel Previews issue, and look over the covers. Lots and lots of artists play the Hide the Feet Game.
@@theneedfulniche This is something of a myth. Using covers doesn't really tell you anything. Feet not appearing on covers has little to do with artists' ability or desire to draw them and more to do with the kinds of images in which feet would or wouldn't naturally appear. The only way you will see the feet is if it's a full body shot from straight on or of the "camera" is looking down on the subject. The latter is pretty rare in comic book covers because it tends to lessen the power and impact of the subject. Instead, it's much more common to have the "camera" looking up at the subject, even if just slightly. This makes the subject appear larger and more powerful. Imagine a video of a moving train shot from a helicopter high above versus being shot from a camera lying on the tracks. A camera angled up like this simply cannot see a person's feet unless the person is airborne.
Rob Liefeld really does hide feet, though. The difference is that he'll draw a full figure then conveniently obscure the feet with rubble or smoke or something. In none of those Jim Lee examples did it seem like he was deliberately hiding feet.
You don’t draw feet unless you have to, no one wants to see feet. You want to see the characters.

Drawing feet is hard because of toes (and how we hardly draw them, so it just becomes this thing that becomes torture when you actually have to draw).
But these characters are usually wearing shoes, it is super weird that one would avoid feet with shoes.

Sean Pattison I was just about to post a comment but I had to check if someone already did. True. Liefield is known in the comic industry to hate drawing feet. I think It was even mentioned in the first Deadpool movie by Deadpool as a joke.
Look at 90s era X-Force. No one had feet, and when they did, they were basic triangles with little detail. Liefield said this was because he knew he couldn't draw feet, and was afraid to overdo it. So when he had to draw them they were just triangles.

@Tongue Twister Depends on the kind of art you wanna make, if comic art a great place to start is with anatomy lessons and perspective lessons. I've taken a lot of great courses on udemy, and my fav was one by a guy named Neil Fontaine. Was really great for teaching me to draw people quickly

I'm going to comment on your explanation. You're use of the shirt and knuckles is a poor example. Her pants are not a sheet that covers both of her legs. Her legs are separated, unlike your hands, so the fabric wouldn't react the way you said it would.

Well to be fair, these are supposed to be professional artists so naturally the need to hold themselves to a higher standard.

@@hexogramd8430 without him, someone else would come up with a fourth wall breaking self-referential trollish ironic type, who only doesn't now because there's already a Deadpool. Might not be called the same thing but would absolutely fill the same gap. It's a character type that was bound to show up sooner or later. I don't even really see what's so special about Deadpool. He's a knowing prick, and that's more fun than annoying in medium sized doses, but there really isn't much else to him. Some pretty standard thing with him having bad scars. Some pretty standard thing with him having lost love trauma. All easily repeatable.
So yeah to get rid of art like that until such a time as he actually decides to try harder and improve his craft, sure fine gimme whatever we'd end up with instead of Deadpool. Fair trade.

Rob liefeld only deserves some credit for deadpool. He made the design but the actual personality behind the character had nothing to do with him.
The personality behind Deadpool, the fourth-wall breaking, the wacky and irreverent sense of humor came more from other artists and writers who worked on the character.
What do you mean he created the character if it wasnt for him no one would have been able to develop him and as far as I remember deadpool has always been that way I was actually buying comics in the early 90s and was around when deadpool and let's not forget cable came out. It's like saying well, Walt Disney only deserves partial credit for mickey mouse smh😂😂
@@TenguBeats He created the design, what people actually remember deadpool for was made and written by other people. Liefeld got the ball rolling but its not because of his comedic talent or ability to write good characters (especially in the 90s where he vomited out whatever pouch covered recolour he felt like for his own series with dreadful artwork lol).
Then youre remembering wrong. Deadpool has not always been the way he is. Liefelds version was a mostly serious mercenary that had a little bit of dry humor now and then. Nothing on the scale of stuff deadpool is known for. If liefeld hadnt inspired a gag character then someone else likely wouldve. Mightve been a different look but that hole wouldve been filled. Liefeld ultimately isnt that important for deadpools main qualities. Thats like saying bob kane deserves the main credit for batman when his first version was a piece of shit, just a guy with awful looking batwings and a generic domino mask with a red shirt. Being the first step/part of something doesnt mean much if the first version had to be overrhauled before people actually carrd about it. Also walt disney actually did make and help animate the mickey mouse people remember, unlike rob who just had deadpool as a mostly throwaway assassin

A lot of artists try to avoid drawing feet. I think Rob is just famous for going to the most hilarious lengths to do it and when he DOES draw feet often doing a dreadful job of it.

Jim Lee draws feet just fine. Rob Leifeld is known to not draw feet.
The reason why is because marvel editors frequently crop images to fit the page. So most of the time the feet would get cropped off so most comic artists don't bother drawing them. Lots of artists struggle to draw feet as a result of this.

Or hands. He tends to draw them as fists a lot or holding something, or he omits them all together. A lot of the time they are incredibly tiny.
He also has drawn feet…just as bad.
@@12pdfb5 Not in Liefeld's case. He intentionally drew mounds of dirt or rubble in front of the feet so he didn't have to draw them.

could you also maybe do some manga artists like some have a beautiful art style and some will be very simple or cartoonish l guess a few examples of some good ones would be Junji Ito, Hiramoto Akira, Kentaro Miura, and Inoue Takehiko and some examples for some very stylistic ones are Hirohiko Araki, Tetsuo Hara, Eiichiro Oda, and Asano Inio it would be much appreciated if you could do something like this

Lee Bermejo is one of the most realistic comic artists to me. He isn't afraid to make it look "ugly". Superhero costumes look too perfect and he isn't afraid of showing the folds, creases, and stitches of each suit.
I am a beginner on comic art. I just Wonder how People doesnt consider artist like Lee Bermejo as the best. How can you compare Lee Bermejo art to others not that detailed?

Rob Liefeld if he had people around him that nurtured his talent and gave him pointers, probably could have evolved as an artist, but no one cared to do that. There are obvious flaws with his anatomy and scale, that if worked on, could have made him a better artist. They milked his popularity and stretched his availability so thin that it was impossible to hone his craft. Rob himself more than likely thought he was good enough and because the current work was what was selling titles for Marvel that was more than enough incentive to keep stagnant. Even looking at his current work, he hasn't learned from his flaws from the 1990's, even in character design.
Jim on the other hand, at least knew what his flaws were (except for costume design) and improved on them. His 1990's work is much different from his 2000's for example. Characters are more chiseled, broader, and in the case of his women, no longer fracturing their spines in awkward posing, spaghetti strands of hair in ponytails or poofed out, longer than the bodies themselves. Its hyper stylized but with realistic anatomy. It is really hard to describe.

No. Rob Liefeld is just terrible. And he's always been terrible, since the nineties. He has been criticized since the nineties as well, and apparently hasn't done anything to get better at drawing.
Being self taught is no excuse for being bad at what you do professionally.
I've seen self taught works and botched plastic surgeries that are better than that Capt. America picture.
You just don't understand true art. It's all about big chests, pockets, and messed up feet. That's true art.

Agree. I started to learn comics (in a school, not self taught) in 1995. Back them he was already criticized and we used his work as an example of what not to do in anatomy.
Also, I don't think that "not having enough time" is an excuse either. His work shows that he just doesn't understand the human body.

During his X-Men years, Jim Lee made a lot of the same mistakes Rob did. It's just that Rob's mistakes were 10x worse.

Yeah but the thing was lee was able to adapt and overall improve his designs. Rob at this point just wants to be the Ed wood of comics art.
Rob and Jim both started at the same time and both along with Todd Mcfarlane started Image. So my point, Rob is self taught so very reasonable to say he tried to mimic Jim and Todd's styles.

Also, you say that Rob Liefeld is "objectively a better artist than 99% of people on the planet," but that is because drawing is a particular skill, and most people do not develop that skill. Like, dentistry is a skill, but I don't want to go to the world's worst practicing dentist simply because "he's better than all the other people who aren't dentists." Would you hire a lawyer who advertised themself as "a better lawyer than 99% of people"?

Personally i think it would be a better question to ask how many feet to characters has Rob Liefeld drew. Also one thing i'd like to point out although he created the look for deadpool (although it is copied from Deathstroke) he isn't the one responsible for creating the character acts (that is subjectively the best part about the character).

Milo Manara is actually an incredibile artist, but, as you said, his work is mostly erotic art. I think that the greatest italian illustrator, and one of the greatest drawer in general, is Gabriele dell'Otto, who worked for both Marvel and DC

@@PopCross I was really surprised to see Manara do this and frankly just how off key the whole drawing is. I've always felt that the noses on his female characters are way, way too small, in many cases practically non-existent.
If I'm not mistaken, Milo Manara's work on spider-woman had to see it completely naked, but Marvel didn't like the idea, hence the problem with the costume. At least I read so in an article but I could also be wrong.

Jim Lee is a much better artist than Rob Liefeld. Out of the seven comic book artists who created Image Comics, I have always thought that Jim Lee was the best out of the bunch.

They're the two best artists of the seven Image Comics founders(and then after them,I'd say it's Marc Silvestri,Erik Larsen,Jim Valentino,Whilce Portacio(all of whom are talented artists,in their own right) and then there's Rob Liefeld,who is the least talented out of all of them.

You don't need a college education in anatomy to be an artist who knows and utilizes proper anatomy. That's NOT anyone's problem. In highschool I knew plenty of artists who understood this and could draw perfectly realistic people.
I think it's the time crunch with not being able to just redo something once you're almost done, mixed in with someone trying to put a spin and flare on their work to stand out and be original.
Kuu Phone Incorrect. Even with mediocre knowledge of anatomy one is still constructing an image off basic volumes, cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders. The Captain America image, and all images shown by that artist, have an issue with the artist not making a good base made of sold volumes upon which his anatomy relies.
If you’re constructing your character’s torso based on, let’s say a box clearly placed in space, with clear understanding of its angle, perspective, centerlines, then your anatomy on top will be as sound as your knowledge of it (so, anything from none to perfect) but the construction will be sound.
The CA image, as was said, looks like it was based on an unfolded box, or a barrel that the artist then forgot how he’d decided to place in space and didn’t check the anatomy he drew for reference. I could say it’s a case of a missing shoulder on the far side to help with the 3/4 angle but even then the wonkiness of the volume is there but it’s a stretch. I think it’s both a case of him being a bad artist in that respect as well as the ones playing him being bad at hiring.
Of course, the style is reflective of the logic of 90s comics that were likely heavily influenced by bodybuilding which reached its peak in size and conditioning during this era... the unfortunate thing was that those bad artists just saw weird musculature that wasn’t there and put muscles upon muscles instead of actually using bodybuilding for reference. Anyway...
A few corrections: Rob Liefeld Co-created Deadpool with Fabian Nicieza, at 1:12 the image on the far right is actually by Mike Deodato Jr, and allegedly it's Liefeld who often hides feet and Jim Lee is just in on the joke/pokes fun at Liefeld for it a bit. Sorry about those! I put more time and care into the second episode in which I state these corrections at the end! Link to the video here!

Like I've said to many others, when you start drawing hands, imagine each finger is just a sausage connected to yet another sausage. I'm not sure how I do it now, but hands don't give me much trouble. Feet are also weird because of their movements. Not all people have one foot straight with another one to the side, and if you draw a person in a way you can't draw the feet you're used to, then the overall composition will look wrong.

Now you can separately give him props for Deadpool and Cable, and still scold him for trash illustrations.
For every Deadpool and Cable, there's Stryfe or Shatterstar original designs... Ugh.
I've always had a disdain for Liefield's drawings, especially those lemon sucking faces.
He tried to emulate Arthur Adams' pouty mouths and failed miserably... forever. Indeed did not care to improve.
@E S To my recollection, Liefield has never pencilled Supergirl. 8:38 is Rocafort, who is good, if very stylised.
It's very obvious that the Supergirl is not Liefield; she has joints, feet, and is relatively proportional. LOL
Except everything anyone likes about Deadpool didn't come from Liefeld. Joe Kelly took knock-off Deathstroke and decided that there wasn't anything interesting there and instead turned him into a joke character because they figured Deadpool was going to be forgotten soon. Kelly also came up with the supporting cast, like Blind Al.

I do find your honesty very helpful your opinions are absolutely comical. And a lot of the views that you bring up absolutely makes sense as it should. Even for myself as being an illustrator myself I look at my own mistakes and other mistakes and realize what I have to do to keep the extremities of awareness together when it comes to Anatomy angles and what and what is not real. just like my illustrator art teacher used to point out the same minor and major details. It's a bit hard but I realize live references or even live poses are the best ways to get the best effect. Thanks a lot keep up the good work great stuff.

I think that is a reallllllly bad idea. Artwork sorta exists as it is. Now, if it is framed as "I'm gonna do MY version of this piece of comic art" that would be fine. But stating it as 'fixing' other people's work is not something that a professional artist should do.
@@TheSwordThain the corridor crew, who popcross claims to be directly influenced by, 'fixes' cg in movies and tv shows, and they are professionals (and have a sub count in the millions). popcross himself basically did it in this video where he slides captain america's head forward in photoshop. so maybe dial back the 'l's in that 'really', cos im not sure things work the way you think they do. especially when some degree of realism is the aim, you can absolutely add or change values and lines to achieve something closer to real.
@@auto1nfanticid3Just because those people do it doesn't make it okay. It's already controversial when comic art gets recolored or reinked. It's considered a smack in the face to the artist. When George Lucas removed the original effects from Star Wars it was a slap in the face to the artists and numerous news outlets thought so. Just because some freaking youtubers do it means nothing.
