  • Spring has gotten away from us! We plant our trees that we got last fall to begin growing our orchard. And our pigs take us for a bit of a wild ride as well.

    The lawnmower is back at it again! MVP of the whole build, if you ask me. LOL

    I suggest a tractor. You can a front end loader, forks, grapple attachments. Then rear blade, bucket, grass cutting, spreader.....and many more. Tractors are very versatile too.

      @TriStarHomestead  Před 2 měsíci

      You can get all those for a skid steer too. Tractors are versatile though. That’s part of my dilemma.

    I watch a bunch of homesteader channels. My impression is that early on while you are building up, the skidsteer is far more useful but once you get the main buildings up, a larger tractor with its larger attachments is way more useful. For example the snowblower that fits on a larger tractor will move a lot more snow than the one that fits on the skidsteer, and the brushcutter on the tractor will cut a lot more than the one on the skidsteer and so forth.

      Interesting take. I think both have equipment that is better than the other but luckily the snow thing won’t affect us. As for brush cutter, you can get some huge cutters for skid steers and some that are far more powerful than a tractor. But they both have their place.

    Skid steer is good, but a tractor with a back hoe is better if u have a lot of trenching to do.

    • @TriStarHomestead
      @TriStarHomestead  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Trenching a wide trench would be tough with a skid steer. You can buy a trencher attachment though for a skid steer but it wouldn’t be quite as wide as a backhoe.

    I think it depends on if you’re going to be plowing or discing a field, then you need a tractor. If not then get a skid steer.

    • @TriStarHomestead
      @TriStarHomestead  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Luckily I will not be doing either one of those ever.

    Yea I got to see ya fish a little at the pond again. Maybe if needed you could stock some bluegill in there if there is not any. Glad to see you two back at it again. Hope your feeling better. I thought for a while the little supervisor took the day off but she showed up. I would go with the skid steer and then eventually a tractor.

      Stocking is on the list! Been looking for a place that ships fish since I can’t get any locally. Hopefully I can get some ordered soon.

    a Tractor more attachments and maintenance and parts are more cheaper

    • @TriStarHomestead
      @TriStarHomestead  Před 2 měsíci

      Interesting. I haven’t looked at maintenance costs on either one. I’m sure tires are a bit cheaper than tracks though.

    Tractor no doubt is more useful without tearing up lawn when you turn.

      Fortunately, or more likely unfortunately, we have a lot of invasive nitrogen fixers up that way. As we take them out we will plant some others.

    Hey guys, I would suggest the skid steer. Not trying to tell you how to do anything but I would like to suggest that you clear an area around your fruit trees of bark, here in Australia they recommend that you leave about 3/4 inches around stem of tree to avoid stem and root rot. Just trying to help you guys succeed.

    Tractor with a front loader. It can do all the things a skid steer can, plus you can run attachments on the back. Especially if you got a tractor with a PTO on the back.

    • @TriStarHomestead
      @TriStarHomestead  Před 2 měsíci

      Tractor can’t run a forestry mulcher though. But a tractor would be better for hay cutting.
