  • Several weeks back I saw some of you in the comments discussing with one another your bags. And there was a topic of "do your bags make you happy though?" raised, which I think is a fascinating aspect to explore and discuss!
I thought I'd include in here some short storytimes, plus, what is REAL happiness?
Let me know what you think, I'd love to know!xx

My bags make me so happy, I like to arrange them on their shelf and just look at them. My husband has a running gag of when I'm feeling down he takes all my bags and starts hanging them all over me because I had told him how happy they make me and when he does that it makes me laugh LOL.

Andersen's fairy tale, The Emperor's New Clothes, is about the effects of conformity--and being the one to stand up for truth, without submitting to pressure. I'm sorry, but who ever said your bag was like an Emperor's New Clothes needs to actually read the story; he or she is just ignorant. You worked hard for your money, and you want to look and feel good; no one has the right to dictate that. I really don't get how that person got Andersen's fairy tale from your bag haha

My Granny was always saying- money can't buy happiness, but it's better to cry in the fancy car than on rust ridden bike. Her family lost everything during war and she survived hunger and poverty and she was never money oriented. But she always was saying- just like you did - that money give you freedom and security. And that's my approach. I love travelling- and although not business class - I prefer to not travel on tight budget.
I love my makeup and skincare- and occasionally mid shelf handbag.
I love the fact that I don't have to skip on nice food ( there was a time when I couldn't afford any decent quality food or had to limit meals). And I like nice things- so now I'm ignoring haters lol

I do have a wardrobe of tailored dresses which sometimes I am embarrassed about because I know "i don't need another dress" as I already have enough. But every time I wear each dress, that fits me perfectly, that is unique in its design, it makes me feel special and pretty.

I remember one day I was at a gas station covered in grease, almost looking like a homeless person because I was so dirty, and a very fancy lady in line behind me said she liked my Hermes wallet, and it made me smile. It's not just a language for rich people, it's a language for people that know what these products mean!
So yes, these things do bring me happiness, and who cares if they do?

@@antoa5825 yes indeed. Haters will always find a reason to shame you and make you feel unworthy of what they wish you didn’t have. If you’re blind, they’ll say “you can’t see your beautiful bag so it’s wasteful”. If you’re missing an arm they’ll say “you cant carry it so it’s wasteful and someone else should have it”. If you’re in full health they’ll say “someone less fortunate could have used that money”. Miserable people will find any reason to lessen your joy. It’s sad. But it’s good, because once the words leave their mouths you will know who you’re really dealing with; a miserable person. Act accordingly.

Like you with your BMW, I do actually always have a grin on my face when I'm driving. One of you told me that in the Buddhist religion, they see the human experience on earth as being about spirit and material goods. They see material goods as good karma coming back to you, so it's not a bad thing. It's what you do with it that counts. Pretty interesting I thought! Hugs to you my friend xx

My luxury bags do bring me joy I will admit, because they aren’t just lovely to look at and wear, but are also a symbol of my success - I never thought that I would be able to own things like that when I was younger. I worked hard and paid for them using the money that I earned and nobody can ever take that away from me. I have also been careful in selecting which bags I do choose to buy, all of which have since either retained or gone up in value since I purchased them so I know that I have something to fall back on should I ever come across hard times. I think that everyone measures success in different ways, one of mine just happens to be materialistic! However I agree with you Sophie that true happiness comes from within, your relationships, your health, putting food on the table, those things are invaluable.

I have worked hard on a professional and personal level to be where I am today. What makes me most happy is the people I chose to have in my life and the little things like the sun warming my cheeks. I am very blessed and wish the best for others, so people who don't like that are not people I want in my life anyway so it really doesn't matter.

Since I was a little girl, I loved scents and later I started spending my money on perfumes from the drugstore. Later I started getting more expensive perfumes and I used them frequently and I remember my mom telling me to "save them" for special occasions. She has been saving hers in boxes and never used them. That was the point when I realized that every day is special and you should use what you have every single day. Because every day is special and you should enjoy what you have not "keep it for a special occasion".

I never had luxury handbags. My most expensive bag is COACH, I paid around 400€ for it. Don't use it very much but love it and will never sell. I bought 7 COACH bags and spent around 2000€ on them.... Shortly after that I discovered for myself vintage COACH bags. I fell in love with them. I sold all my other bags and newly bought bags I didn't even use. Absolutely adore using my vintage bags. I really like them, I like the feeling of soft leather and craftsmanship. Maybe it is weird, but can not help it. I collected around 40 vintage Coach bags to understand which ones will work better for me. They are all beautiful and I have chosen 9 or 10 to keep and using them on daily basis. Still would like to get 1 or 2 luxury brand bags, but not quite sure what I would like....probably BVLGARI as an evening bag and maybe LADY DIOR. I like all your bags and outfits you create with them. You always look very elegant even with trainers on. And my answer is YES, MY BAGS MAKE ME HAPPY when I use them or when I look at them. Thank you for the video!

I wear all my high end jewelry, including diamonds to work. That is my thing. One co-worker asked me if I am not nervous wearing them or losing a stone etc. she told me she has one Diamond pendant but keeps it in a safe and only takes it out for special events. I told her life is too short to just keep things tucked away. They make me happy wearing them each day. If I lose a stone, we’ll that is why Jewelers are here to help.

I love jewelry, so I have a small collection. It makes me so happy to get up in the morning and pick out what pieces I'm wearing today. But I do get negative comments from family members and work colleagues sometimes. Especially if I happen to be in sweatpants and a tshirt/hoodie/graphic tee. It hasn't stopped me from getting jewelry but it can dampen my mood if someone makes a comment because my jewelry is what I wear to boost my confidence and make me feel more feminine.

I love the topic Sophie. I am someone who loves exploring different type of crafts. Each new craft I explore cost me a lot of money (tools, material, etc). But people don't judge me for it. Because the they don't see the "behind the scene" expenses. They only see the end products. To be honest, all my craft related tools and materials that I buy, would easily add up to a designer bag price. But yet, people see me as a non materialistic person. If only they see the "behind the scene" stuff I buy 😁

Yes, at the age of 50, I know what matters and what doesn't . My bags bring me joy but at my age, they don't define me. I have worked very hard and have achieved the success that I wanted. I always tell my teens, self accomplishment is the greatest gift in life. Do what you wish with it. If you are judging others, then you need to ask yourself why others happiness ( no matter the source) unravels you . There must be discontentment there. I love my life and won't apologize for that. Great topic. xx

In the last two weeks I watched many of yours videos constantly and I digged my wardrobe and taken out my existing luxury items, cleaned them and displayed them nicely including my belts . To my surprise I had quite a few luxury items like Versace, Gucci, Prada . Watching them makes me happy and you are sooo right. I bought them Worked very hard to get them and I could effort to buy more . I wasn’t buying just because people was critical about the money I am spending.
Spending our well deserved money to what makes us happy should be our pride and motivation. Go girls !

Collectible items can range from bags, cars, watches, paintings, art works, digital assets, etc... and they can also reveal a person's social status. The people who are sarcastic and giving you a hard time are simply jealous of you. They think they are better than you or more deserving than you so, just ignore them because they are not your friends.

for me, its my books. My absolute faves I will collect multiple editions and special editions. I recently discovered book boxes ($90 to get them here to aus, but they are only 27pounds for uk) but so far they are stunning. My copy of Empire of Vampire is just beautiful, and looking at it makes me happy (and its now worth 200pounds or about $400 aud second hand, so its not a cheap hobby haha). Same with art work. I have some prints that just make me smile.
I feel like people who judge you for what you buy are just jealous of you spending money they might wish they had. But you never really know another persons financial situation to know how they paid for anything so its a bit silly.
Its hard today with social media constantly throwing in your face what you SHOULD love because other people love it i've found. But focus on the self and what you enjoy is more important to me. It's hard, but you will be happy in yourself and the goals you achieve for yourself. And asking yourself WHY you want something. Do you actually want it... or did social media tell you you want it?

My bags and shoes really do bring me happiness, especially when dressing up, I feel lifted up. What was bringing more happiness was when my bf loves taking pictures and video with me with those items! Another time is when I take them out to wear to pretty places ☺️
I do get a lot of judgement about my items, especially when meeting friends/then meeting more friends of friends, but I bring them out anyway because it's what I love to wear. If one judges you so much buying luxury and feel disgusted by it, then it's an easy way to realise that they won't be someone you want to spend time with. But if they can see past that and actually get to know you, then I feel like I found a friend that genuinely wants to know me than feel blocked by.. a handbag 😅🤣

My husband and I are very lucky that we are successful but we don't let family know because I feel like they think(not my family, his) that we don't "deserve" it. They are nice people but judgey. I completely agree, of course being able to afford good quality healthy food & life’s necessities, the opportunity to own, love & take care of my pets as well as being able to maintain meaningful relationships with the people who matter the most to me provides me with the most happiness. As long as you have built good foundations in your life (family, friends, etc) having money to buy things you love can bring an added measure of happiness to an already happy life. Bags are my thing but I didn’t think about them or covet them all the years I was working as a teacher. I remember someone asking me if a bag I was carrying once was a Mulberry and I didn’t even know what they were talking about then! Now the mortgage is paid off and the children have left home I’ve developed an interest and have the time to enjoy watching videos such as this. I have a lovely and growing collection but it’s not something I talk about with any of my friends and I don’t think they would recognise the brands. They don’t define who I am and I like to talk about other things with my friends. Like Sophie said it’s nice to hear from other people who enjoy buying luxury goods and get inspiration.

I'm a teacher and I get judged constantly for the bags I have. It's weird because it's very common for women in Korea to have a fancy handbag but as a foreigner, I seem to get judged more by other foreigners or men (Korean and foreign) the most for saving up my teachers salary to buy handbags, stay at luxury hotels for holidays and my birthday and eat nice food. I save up all of my money. So because at least I'm doing the work it takes to treat myself, I've stopped caring about their judgements. But it used to bother me.

Along the way, somehow the happiness left as I've felt judged many times because of the bag I had and have since stopped using it. So while it did make me happy at first, I found that the judgement that came along with using it has made me uncomfortable. I think this is a case of having to develop an "I don't care about you" attitude and reconnect with the initial joy I felt.

Money goes a looooong way into making one happy. No, it is not only money, of course, relationships matter too. But if you have money you have access to stability, healthcare (unfair since everyone should, I think), and food. I'm older and after many years, I'm finally able to afford good things in life, and I am unapologetic about it. But I do want to remind everyone that giving to others (in time, charity, volunteering) is also part of this wonderful recipe of happiness. I say: enjoy all your beautiful bags, shoes, etc. (I do and am looking forward to buying some key items!), but also.....don't forget to give to others who truly might not have much support in life.

Thus I often don’t get taken seriously or people think I’m immature because of my love for nice bags. Same goes for makeup - I defo get a lot of heat for being decked out in makeup on a Monday morning while others are carrying cups of coffee and give me funny looks or make stupid comments about how I probably don’t have many responsibilities outside of work 😳

I enjoy beauty, craftsmanship, tradition, and creativity in any form. This makes me happy. My husband and I have traveled the world and love eating delicious food that looks like it should be hung on a wall as art, or exploring an incense shop where the same family has done their craft for 300 years. Luxury bags, decor, clothing, cars, watches, art, or whatever, are outlets for people to express themselves. You can carry a truly beautiful item with no logos and people will notice, because beauty attracts people. Yes, beauty is subjective, but speaking of it in general terms, there are things that the human brain is just naturally attracted to. Call this symmetry, or the golden ratio (aka divine proportion) things that are "pleasant" to the eye draw our eye. Whether we can appreciate it or not is a different story, but no one should be made to feel bad for appreciating something they consider beautiful and makes them happy.

(I’m a makeup artist) last weekend I had a client and while I was at their home (really nice neighborhood btw) the husband made a comment “ Are u going to charge us extra since you have all those Louie bags?!” I bring my makeup in my keepall and yes it was matching my Palm Springs and my hat 😂 but still… I was mortified!!! I felt so bad. Thank you truly for this video. I work very hard Bc I love to work and I love to be able to have nice things and no one has the right to me feel ashamed… I paid for it!

There’s no Louie tax, but the judgmental attitude will cost you, sir. 😉 Seriously though, I cannot imagine. If I had my makeup done and the artist had LV bags, I’d assume she must be amazing at her job, because she’s making enough to afford luxury items!

Thank you for starting this discussion! This is something I have been asked many times and can’t help but think that having a fashion collection doesn’t have to bring happiness s happiness is different for everyone. At the same time when you work really hard, having a symbol of that work and success is really gratifying. I just always wish that fashion items have the garner same respect for that which luxury cars and watches do which I can’t help but just assume it comes down to misogyny

Great topic.. I think a lot of the negative comments come from envy/jealousy.. I admire someone that stands tall..walks with confidence…fills the room.. and if a luxury bag or clothes gives you that extra boost…great 👍 there are a lot of things I cannot afford to do/buy..but I save up and eventually I can get it… love this chat 🤗 thank you Sophie 💕🇨🇦

I can relate alot, I get judged almost on the daily, im a soft hearted person somethings it gets to me, but I won’t let other people’s problems, because it’s there issue not mine, I don’t brag or show off, I just love luxury 😍
I won’t let them stop me living my life the way I want! I do often leave my bag in the car for the school run , but defo feel I still get judged for my designer clothing, but I’m going to get my cost per wear and rock my Chanel coat on the school run! 😍if they don’t like it that’s ok it’s not my problem!

Miss Sophie! thanks for opening this discussion! I have few thing in life (material and non material) that makes me happy. One of those are my desgner bags and jewellery. At the time that we are living on at the moment, where i cant see my family ( another thing that make me truly happy) , then my bags and jewelleries are one of the few things that i can pull happiness from! Life is short, do and have things that make you happy. You cannot bring your money to the grave

Thank you for the many perspectives you outlined, and I’ve appreciated reading the comments sections too. Personally I am happy that I have been able to work hard and afford the things that I need and like, whether it is from Target and IKEA or from a luxury brand. It is a wonderful feeling to know that through MY hard work I have been able to pay for life’s necessities as well as some other things to treat myself without piling up credit card debt. Do I have everything on my wish-list that can be categorized as ‘unnecessary’? Nope, but that is just something to work towards and look forward to. As long as my loved ones and I have our health and our honest day’s work can get us life’s necessities, I consider us blessed and accomplished. Wishing you and your YT community many blessings❣️

Hi Sophie, Thank you for the in-depth talk about being happy with objects. Let's face it, there will always be remarks (positive or negative), it's very human. For me, certain clothes and bags are pieces of art, that makes me happy when I wear them. Prices have nothing to do with it, cheap or expensive, I get the same feeling. To each their own !!! Yes, happiness are many things, just enjoy what you have, and don't compare 😃

I love my designer handbags and work hard in my tech sales career to buy them! There are sales goals that I set for myself personally and when I hit them my reward is a new handbag. There are times someone makes a comment about my expensive handbags but they are a symbol to me of my hard work and reaching a goal.

Great topic! "Money buys freedom" I definitely agree on that. Like you said, it doesn't solve all your problems in life and make bad/sad things go away, but being able to pay bills, buy food, pay rent etc. that does take an enormous weight of ones shoulders and lessens stress, which I'd bet makes most people happy. A stress-free life and financial stability I think are two things most people dream of having and in a perfect world everyone should have that. Also buying things you've always dreamed of can definitely make you happy. The things I've dreamed about buying and eventually have bought still make me giddy and happy everytime I look at them and use them, even it's seemingly insignificant like a new dress or a bag. I agree it's definitely a mix of the material stuff and things like family, friends, work, health etc.

My bag collection make me happy but lately I feel I have enough and will be not buying so many anymore. I bought most of my LV while grieving my eldest daughters death but I love all of them. I’m at purse peace for now ☺️

My beret collection makes me happy. They're not designer or expensive - what I paid for them range between £10 and £30 - and all but two are the classic plain wool one with the little tag thing in the middle. But I happen to think I really suit a beret, they can be worn in a host of different ways, and they top off my outfits and gives me that classic-vintage-parisian vibe that I love.
OBVIOUSLY looks aren't tied to a person's worth, yet there is no denying that stepping out of my front door looking nice and put together makes me feel confident, which in turn makes me happy, especially since my confidence was at one point VERY low - and that's how my bags and shoes and nice coats (and my berets!) makes me happy.

7:56 onwards perfectly said! 😊 For me, money is a tool I use so that I can more easily access happiness. Happiness come in all forms and we can have multiple joys that come from within us and also those that come from things we appreciate.

That is so true! Happiness is not a destination, it’s the journey itself that everyone should enjoy
