- On March 23, 1993, a giant comet was discovered near Jupiter. After being tracked for several weeks it was discovered on May 20, 1993 that the comet was going to impact Jupiter in July of 1994. This video gives a very brief history of the Shoemaker Levy 9 comet.
Watching your video, I was trying to remember Shoemaker's connection to Arizona when I finally realized he was the one who determined Meteor Crater in Arizona was actually a meteor impact rater, rather than the previously-assumed volcanic crater.
Fascinating man with an incredible resume of accomplishments. Thanks for sharing this one!
PS - I live in Arizona and have a friend visiting for the first time, and Meteor Crater is on our agenda next Saturday!
You are correct about Eugene Shoemaker. Enjoy Meteor Crater.
I had never heard of that event until today. I guess I was busy with work and life back then. Very interesting. You should never stop teaching, Forrest.
Welcome back Forrest, not heard from you for a while. I remember the event very well, watching it on The Sky At Night here in the UK. Well done for bringing it back to me. Don’t be a stranger. Keep your F.B channel going, loving it. David.
This wee teaser has left us yearning for more of you Forrest.
Amazing video

Awesome, thank you!
I remember my Geography teacher in school, Mrs O’Neill, telling us about this comet when it was discovered, she was pretty stoked about it and it peaked my interest in our skys and beyond. Thanks Mrs O’Neill.. Belfast, Ireland.
Edit: Oh, and thank you Forrest for bringing back fond memories and of course, all your amazing videos. Long term subscriber. 😊👍
Always great video brother from the imperial county California 👍👍🇺🇲
The legend returns once again.
Missed ya Forrest. !! Welcome back.
Thank you 🙏. I’m waiting for cooler weather so I can head out to the desert to make more videos.
Mt. Wilson’s observatory is a very cool one too. Great view from up there.
Great to see a video up - you would make a GREAT history professor. I would have learned so much! Thank you!!!!
Glad you’re back!

Another good video, thank you Forrest.
Another fantastic history lesson and video!
Great piece of history.
Very cool! If you're ever in the Flagstaff, Arizona area, you can stop by the Lowell Observatory where Pluto was discovered.
I remember this well. Thanks for showing us where the comet was discovered!
Thank you for another super video! I used to love to travel, especially to places with great history. I can't travel much anymore so your videos and those that offer virtual travel are wonderful. Thanks again! 👍
The inspiration for “Deep Impact” in a sense. Good stuff as usual, Forrest!
Another great video Mr Haggerty! Stay safe and god bless!

Is this you Vianey?
Yes this is me! I know with the changes in the names I wasn't sure if you would recognize me!@@forresthaggertychannel4301
Wow, how have I and I imagine most people not heard of this event? Short video, but I'll take what I can get from Mr Haggerty and his too-rare informative and entertaining posts.
Thanks Forrest for sharing Palomar Observatory with all your followers. Back in the 80’s when I lived in Julian, I’d ride my motorcycle up to Palomar for a Sunday run with my girlfriend. For those who are looking for a beautiful place on a weekend drive, definitely put this observatory on your list.
I agree! It’s very beautiful and peaceful up there.
Thanks!
Thank you 🙏. I will put it towards my next project.
Very interesting. I never knew anything about that.
Really super cool
Very cool
Thank you for great video, im probably never gona be there.
Thanks Jupiter for taking one for team!
I remember see in the comet back in 94/95 ?
Notification gang
I had to refresh my memory. The largest impactor was fragment G which created an explosion of 6 million megatons. Which was 600 times the entire world's arsenal. Left a mark the size of Earth.
The probe Galileo detected a fireball of 23,700 °C; 42,700 °F that was 3,200 km; 1,900 miles high.
Kindof a shame for a perfectly useful telescope not to be employed somewhere. At least it's preserved for future use.
wow that beginning almost had me sleeping. Love your videos.
That's not exactly a compliment.
@@AllergicFungusim trying to say he has a relaxing voice.
I heard Jupiter acts like Earth's big brother protecting us from comets etc. that would otherwise hit us.
Forrest Haggerty! Can you a video about the assassination of sweden prime minister Olof Palme that happened on 28 february 1986 in Stockholm? And about Dag Hammarskjolds plane crash?
It's so cool that we got to witness Armageddon. Lucky for us it was on another planet 😓
Very funny 😄
@@forresthaggertychannel4301 Lol thanks. You make great videos, kudos.
All the cool stuff is in California.
Sounds like a nice tall tale that never actually happened to me. Let me guess those nice CGI photographs prove it right?
It didn’t actually happen to you because you are the one living in a simulation.
The comet was only a mile in diameter. A single piece would not end life on Earth, let alone the entire comet.
Never has there been a President who loves America as Donald Trump.
Wrong.
