  • Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: TNG, Stand By Me, Geek Royalty) talks to Stefan Pape about his new movie Rent-A-Pal. The ‘90s throwback horror film was written and directed by Jon Stevenson, and stars Brian Landis Folkins, Amy Rutledge, Kathleen Brady, Adrian Egolf, Josh Staab, Luke Sorge, Olivia Hendrick, Karin Carr, and Sara Woodyard.
During the interview, he talks about Stand by Me, how it was such a poignant part of his life connecting to his own personal circumstances and how those from Star Trek are his family.
Plot: Set in 1990, a lonely bachelor named David (Brian Landis Folkins) searches for an escape from the day-to-day drudgery of caring for his aging mother (Kathleen Brady). While seeking a partner through a video dating service, he discovers a strange VHS tape called Rent-A-Pal. Hosted by the charming and charismatic Andy (Wil Wheaton), the tape offers him much-needed company, compassion, and friendship. But, Andy's friendship comes at a cost, and David desperately struggles to afford the price of admission.
Rent-A-Pal will be in select theatres and on-demand September 11

I Loved the movie. I am not a loner but this movie spoke to my heart, and tbh I felt that the guy dies satisfied and happy... and it was a calm death along with a smile on his face.
both him and his mother lived in their own worlds until their death

Few movies can take you back to the same feelings you had when you first watch a film. Close my eyes..

Loved Rent a Pal. Dark and twisted. Will is the villain even though he doesn’t directly do anything as Andy

Interesting the point of view he has on his character cause I didn't really feel it that way.
Yet the movie was quite good and I can fully understand why he joined this project as it has huge links to what's happening now with internet tending loneliness.

Yell out your window, Wil. You would've gotten more of an audience! Sad numbers for 122k sub channel.

This movie could have gone in a slightly different direction and been a very good horror comedy. I would have had David working while his mom was at an adult daycare and at work made fun of and his boss walking all over him and the video pal Andy would be giving him good advice on how to be more accretive and more fun and cool. He would turn things around, play some pranks getting bullies back and becoming popular. Such popularity may lose traction if an alpha challenges him and he is humiliated .... over time though Andy start's suggesting more and more dark revenge pranks to regain his popularity maybe even blackmailing the boss etc. Then in order not to lose David as a friend he gives him the wrong advice that backfires. Many of the scenes I would leave in though. I would probably want to recast David's character with Jim Gaffigan whom did very well playing a creepy pedo guy in Law & Order SVU.
