Happy Birthday! I’ve been Delta Skymiles member for years and have found differences across partner airlines when I fly to Europe. It appears to me that Delta’s “Economy” is completely different from partner “Economy”. On Delta, Economy means the cheapest possible price with no benefits. I think it’s their way of competing with the bargain airlines like Frontier, Spirit, etc. Economy on European based airlines seems to be similar to “Main” cabin. When booking on Delta, the lowest fares that you will get benefits on will be in the “Main” cabin prices. I think the KLM reps might be unaware of the difference in the definition of “Economy.” Good luck and have a great trip.
Add your flying blue number to your delta reservation and you should be good
Here comes another tip for the future: when you book a US domestic flight, do not book it from Europe. Use a VPN and book it from a US server. In most cases, it is a lot cheaper.
Oh!!! I think your points and miles predicament sounds like a perfect opportunity for a collaboration with Kara and Nate! They’re always talking about it. Not sure if that’s feasible with your current available time but maybe a future video idea?

Yeah, Delta has unfortunately been doing this for a few years with their basic economy fares. Even if you have Diamond status, you can't book seats in advance and don't get skymiles for those flights. It makes pricing them out more difficult.
I believe the KLM agent may have been misinformed. Booking basic economy through Delta's website normally won't give you miles. Maybe they were trying to make an exception with their manager, but you normally need to book main cabin. You should still get the free checked bag, but would have to pay for a seat assignment.
If you don't mind taking the Delta eCredit, Southwest has great deals from the west coast to Hawaii.

I usually find that on check in day, it asks you if you want to upgrade ( sometimes days in advance ) and it’s always for less than if you booked originally. I do a lot of upgrades that way, usually to business or even first.
I’ve gotten to where I don’t worry so much once the tickets are booked , it’s always easy to change later.

Turning 50 wasn't so bad for me, 40 was. Now I'm heading to 70 and that is a hard one. 60 nope 65 not so much other than it was in covid times and couldn't celebrate. I guess we should all be happy with the age we are and enjoy life. Have fun in Hawaii, my happy place and wish I could see you when you get to my home area of Vancouver. Enjoy.
Frustrating! I don’t have an answer but make sure you hold the new flight before cancelling the basic economy flight if you decide to go that route. Good luck & happy birthday!

I flew DFW to Maui on American Airlines. I booked a cheap seat - but I put in a request for a seat upgrade. I had to pay a little (I think around $100) and they charged me 14K miles. Well worth it... the 7 hr flight I got to sit in business class and had great food.

I'll tell you my experience. First of all, if you booked thru Delta proper (not thru KLM or AF or VA website), Delta rules will apply to Delta Basic (bc if KLM doesn't have basic, then KLM rules would apply).
I will tell you, my partner and I had Basic tickets to Paris. We cancelled them, and Delta didn't charge a $200 cancellation fee. We got the entire purchase price as a credit. IDK if that will happen.
But with Basic on Delta you will accrue no miles or status points. You also won't get to pick your seat.
If you have miles, using them out of a non hub airport is sometimes effective, so check that out, too.
(MSP to HNL was 68K miles, but Toronto to HNL (thru MSP, taking the same flight) was only 28K points.
Also, try Booking with miles on KLM as flight availability is different than with cash.
It takes a minute or two to play, but it can be rewarding. Good luck!

Happy Birthday Morgan! Basic economy fares in the US usually don’t offer the perks you get with status. This should have been disclosed on the web site before you confirmed your purchase. At this point I’d leave things the way they are and be prepared to pay for your checked bag. Maybe you’ll be lucky but I doubt DL will honor what KLM told you.

Happy Birthday Morgan! Another thing to consider when deciding on whether to rebook your flight… flying in your current status, you would be one of the first to be booted if the flight is overbooked. Congratulations on getting someone on the phone though - that’s a huge accomplishment! 😂

I learned years ago to not get basic economy ever, no matter how cheap it seems. If you have to make an emergency change it costs more than if you just bought regular economy. After years of traveling I have learned that anything can happen that will change your travel plans.
Usually if you book the flight from KLM, then KLM rules apply although Delta will operate it. Your flight code will be a shared code (KLM airline code followed by 4 digits) indicating that this is 'considered' as a KLM flight. If you book the same flight with Delta directly, then Delta rules apply, and your flight code will be a Delta airline one (Delta airline code followed by 3 digits) indicating that this is a Delta flight. This does make people confused but it usually works in this way. In this case, you can consider that KLM airlines just 'borrow' some seats on the Delta to accommodate its own customers. so perhaps Delta's advice may be more reliable. Well, this is what I know. It may be not correct. Let's see what others say...Happy birthday!
Yes, that is correct. Not 100 %, but 99 %, so enough to get the point.
I _could_ tell you what you do... but I am not sure if you will listen to me. However, I will try. The AF/KLM frequent flyer program is "Flying Blue", while the Delta frequent flyer program is "SkyMiles". Notice that those are different things. What you can do is: Have your miles for your flight to Hawaii credited to “SkyMiles”. Afterwards you can have it rewritten to “Flying Blue” (probably you will loose some miles doing that). But you still won't get any "Flying Blue" program perks on your Delta flight to Hawaii.
I forgot to say: If you stay with the BASIC Economy tariff for your Portland - Hawaii flight, you will earn no miles for the SkyMiles program. Meaning, of course, there will be no miles to be transferred to Flying Blue.

Portland to Honolulu 2,593 miles...so really not a tremendous amount of miles...I got confused 2 minutes in on your volg..lol...since I passed 50 over a decade ago...I opt for the flight that gives me the most comfort and the least amount of drama....Happy Birthday!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY in advance and I can tell you that from my personal point of view, the way 50 makes one feel depends largely on whether you are looking ahead to it, or back at it.
As 50 loomed large in my life, it felt like a gigantic milestone (and not the good kind) similar to that Acme anvil that often hangs over the head of Wily Coyote.
Heck, 50 years is half a century and at 1st blush that does not sound welcome from any perspective.
Now that I have moved on to struggling with turning 70 however, I realize how freeing my 50s turned out to be.
Kidding aside, I had some of my best life experiences in my 50s, and was able to let go of tons of general anxiety and stress.
I don't know if it is a gender thing, but I've yet to meet a woman over 50 who didn't wake up on that magic birthday morning realizing they were simply not going to take any kind of crap anymore, and finding that to be an amazingly liberating realization which I hope you will experience also.
CABOTAGE is the term which concerns the inability of a foreign airline ( in this case KLM but also applies to a ship or train ) to make a trip between two points in USA. If the KLM website was really good, it would have suggested a partner airline which I guess would be Delta

Air Canada has a similar process with low priced tickets not giving loyalty points. Before moving forward, I would make sure your Delta booking has your Flying Blue loyalty number associated with it.

BTW, I help care for my 92 year old mom and she was a college professor who taught German, Russian and Italian. She was very lucky to have escaped Nazi Germany with fake papers. She has been back to Germany many times.
And this is one of the reasons I don’t worry too much about the miles game. Too many hoops (in my opinion) and you don’t always get what you think. I’d (again, speaking just for me) rather have the freedom to book the absolute best flight every single time.

Happy born day to you🎉 I personally would cancel the flight and book all with delta. I had the same problem before.
I always book main cabin with Delta, very flexible options and allows you to pick your seat. If you booked economy I would check to see if you are allowed to pick your seat, usually not. Also, with Delta, the AmEx card, even the basic one, allows you to check bags free and provides a discount when booking with miles.
The sign up bonus for AM EX card is usually pretty generous as well. If you know someone that has Delta miles they are allowed to book a seat for you with their miles, just saying if that's an option.

I fly Delta a lot--almost exclusively, in fact. As a result, I have some status with them. From that experience, I can offer two points. First, never book the basic economy status. You lose too much, and the extra few dollars for main cabin is worth it in my estimation. Second, if you have at least a main cabin ticket, you can change your cabin for the differential price, and if you cancel the ticket even moments before the flight, the entire amount is held in reserve for your later use. Delta is probably the only remaining airline that doesn't charge penalty fees for canceled, changed, or rebooked tickets.
Thanks for that. I have definitely learned my lesson about reading the "fine print" when booking between different airlines within the same miles program!

It almost sounds like my story in Feb. for my cruise down to Mexico. I booked my flight to Houston from Vancouver with my Air Canada Aeroplan points. I booked a United flight because the time of day worked better for me. When I tried to check in. My number code didn't work on the United app. So I phoned United and the cs person said he could see my booking but I had to phone Air Canada and get a new code from them. So after 45 minutes on the phone with Air Canada and 3 people talking to United trying to get me a new code so I could check in. I got a new code that worked. I hope you enjoy your time in Vancouver. I'm flying Air France back to Barcelona for a 2 week transatlantic cruise to Miami.

You're probably never going to feel like you're 50. The increasing numbers aren't likely to have any actual meaning inside your head. In mine, I'm still some weird combination of 18 and 25, and I'll be turning 60 later this year. Forget about the numbers and just enjoy the cake!

Yes definitely cancel and rebook! Do NOT trust what Delta told you. In the end, Delta does not know or care that you are tied to KLM. They will only look at their Delta policy. So I would definitely say to cancel and redo so you can get your miles and such.

yeah so you're learning the game yet. Anyway, whenever I go into my Delta reservation to check if they've changed times or flight number, the first thing that I see is the upgrade offers. Do you get those when you go into your reservation on Delta's website? Perhaps that's where you could get from Basic to Main cabin. If not, what the Delta rep told you is your best option. Cancel the ticket and use the eCredit plus the additional to book the same flight in Main cabin.
Happy 21st birthday. I believe if you book an economy class seat with Delta you would get a lot more flexibility and actually get to accumulate Delta Skymiles and if you ever needed to make changes you would be able to. If you were flying Delta Basic Economy on a domestic flight in the US I would expect a miserable experience. By the time you got on the plane there would be no bin space available to put your overhead carry-on. I understand you do not want to spend a lot of money. I usually fly 5 times a year domestically and thers are people you travel every week for work. I usually fly Comfort Plus on a domestic flight because I don't like getting harassed to take my seat so the plane can depart.
Sounds like you are a member of the AF/KL mileage program which means you follow their rules they have set up with the other carriers you can collect miles on. You are not a DL mileage member traveling on their mileage rules, which is what the DL agent was quoting. Rules are not the same with every carriers in a program, they all have their own rules so it does make a difference who you book with and who's mileage program you use for that travel. The DL website will only have their rules and the AF/KL website will only have their program rules which will be different.

Btw... found always cheaper to book 2 one way flights into Canada. From the US when you book Canadian flight back it's in Canadian dollars and the favorable exchange rate makes I less expensive.

Very strange, when I am going to Orlando I book through KLM and it's always Delta. And we have been able to change seats through the Delta website too eventhough we booked through the KLM site.
As retired military, we get free baggage on Air Canada. They also partner with United. So when I fly from Toronto to Florida it is an Air Canada plane and all is good, but when I return, even though I have an Air Canada ticket, the plane is operated by United, so they will not honour the free luggage. Too many rules!

Another small comment about a misunderstanding: you say in the video that your trip from Hamburg to Portland is one flight with KLM and one flight with Delta. (I assume: Hamburg - Amsterdam - Portland) But that's not true. Both flights are KLM flights, but the Amsterdam - Portland flight is operated by Delta. This sounds “petty,” but it has important legal consequences. Remember your trip to Fuerteventura: that wasn't a flight with Marabu, but a flight with Condor, operated by Marabu.
You need to be in the main cabin in order to get free luggage as a silver medallion member, I just booked a flight from Florida to Ohio and made sure I was in main cabin, I am sorry that you are going through this. it boils down to do you want the perks, or just a flight. Hay . Leave it as it is but ask KLM for the confirmation in writing. One other thing you can do is call back and record the conversation . Sounds a little underhanded but it’s allowed and can be used as evidence.

Blame Ed Bastian for him nuking the Skymiles program. It’s one reason why I don’t fly them.
Now, ALWAYS attach your Flying Blue account to your reservation. That way, you’ll be able to accrue miles for your journey. From my experience, when I flew on Alaska Airlines last year in January, I attached my American Airlines Advantage number and was able to accrue miles on American despite me flying on Alaska. Also, I got the same perks on Alaska as I did on American because I was a Oneworld Emerald at the time.
My advice is to never book Basic Economy with Delta or the other carriers despite your current status in the future. Even though I have United Airlines flight benefits now, giving me discounts on plane tickets with them as well as go non rev with them and the fact that I have the same benefits as regular people, I would rather book in regular economy because I love having the ability to change my flight if I find a lower fare.
FYI, I actually got $135 of flight credit on United last week because of a broken seat I was in and also I found a lower fare in the cabin I booked in.
