  • Rivian recently revealed a new SUV-and the start of a second EV model line-with the R2 joining the R1S and R1T. It’s about the same size as compact luxury SUVs such as the Porsche Macan and the BMW X3 and will come with a choice of three motor configurations and two battery sizes. The R2 is expected to start at around $45,000 and is promised for mid-2026. Which brand do you think is making the best EVs?

Rivians are really nice vehicles. The upcoming R2 will sell very well and enable enough volume for the company to turn a profit.

I’m excited for the R2. Wife wants the R1S for camping.

I really don't like the glass roof, the heat that must come off that thing would be crazy. It might be nice at night, or when it's raining, but I'll pass.

Rivian's R2/R3 gameplan is preposterous. The R2 is tentatively planned for Jun '26. For Rivian, this could really mean Jun '36. Rivian is tracking to declare bankruptcy sometime in '25. By selling the R1S for $90k, Rivian is losing
$1.5 bill/qtr. By selling the slightly smaller R2 for $45k, Rivian's losses will probably double. In the meantime, good luck trying to find buyers of the R1S for $90k; when similar vehicle is coming out for $45k. In summary, very unlikely Rivian will ever sell even one R2. Very likely Rivian enters bankruptcy in '25 at the latest

No, it doesn't work that way. Rivian doesn't actually lose money per vehicle sold. In fact, they stated they make $38,000 of profit per R1T sold. It's just they haven't sold enough of them to offset the money the company is spends/was spending for development and manufacuring. If they hit higher total volume that silly margin calculation will turn to a positive number.
The bankruptcy timeline is also assuming no future investors. VW just invested $5 billion. Don't forget Tesla was in the red (losing more money than they spend) for 6 years from 2014 and to 2020. Rivian will not be green for many years during its growth stage. But assuming they survive, it will normalize just like it did for Tesla.

You’re missing public information that undermines your claims. They will definitely produce and sell R2’s.
