As an owner of a System-8, I love the sound and the option of running 3 different plugout synth in it. For those who don't know, the System-8 has it's own internal synthesis that borrows from Roland classic synths on top of having 3 slots to load your pick of a list of 8 plugout synth.
What is a plugout? It's a software synth that can run as a plugin in your favorite DAW on Windows or MAC AND can also be run inside the System-8 hardware (without the need of a computer). Plugout Technology originally came out with the System-1 and System-1m. The System-8 can play 8 voices of polyphony so they made 8 voices polyphonic synth for it. It comes with the Jupiter-8 Plugout, the Juno-106 plugout and the JX3P plugout. But using the Roland cloud (membership or lifetime key) you can load any of the 4 poly synths (Jupiter-8, Juno-106, JX-3P, Juno-60) or 4 mono synths from the plugout format (SH-101, SH-2, Promars, SH-100).
Check out the video for how to make the best decision for your System-8.

Thanks, very nice video! I find the Plug-out concept brilliant and Roland's reproductions of their legendary synths (down to the actual individual electronic components) sound perfect (to my humble ears). The ACB plug-ins are beasts that require a lot of processing power (as you can see in Ableton for example) but the System-8 handles them as plug-outs absolutely flawlessly.
I love all the originally loaded plug-outs of the System-8, but was pleasantly surprised by the Juno-60 plug-out. Besides the two (60/106 filters, the arpeggiator is different: The Juno-60 can span 3 octaves (like on the Boutique JU-06A). Whereas the Juno-106 (and JX-3P) can only span 2; but they do have step control (that the 60 is missing).
I also got a System-1m and my favorite plug-out for it is the System-100. However, I am not familiar at all with modular synths (beyond producing psychedelic sounds through basic self-patching). It would be fantastic if you could do a video sometime on how to use the System-100 to produce classic modular synth sounds.
Merci encore pour tes superbes vidéos!

I’m 4 months into my Play 4 Life Cloud membership and have 2 lifetime keys to choose, but I find I’m “plugging-out” to my System-8 those that use a ridiculous amount of CPU on my M1 Mac and not necessarily those I’ll wish to keep at the end of the year. I’ve already decided I’ll keep the JD-800 which isn’t a plug-out - just not sure about the second lifetime key.. as for which I’ll use on the System-8.. Jupiter 8, JX-3P and probably Juno 60. Ps I count Omnisphere as a System-8 plug-out and just drag around my old, light 12” 2016 MacBook :)

Hi . Thank you for this video, It helped me a little in my choice of plug-out👍
I just bought a System 8, it's a wonderful machine (with lots of flaws but I like it).
    I had a few questions:
If I reset the synth, I assume the plug-outs will return to their original place and version?
Does a global backup record plug-out data (updates or plug-outs installed in the different slots) or do we have to go through the "Roland cloud" for any changes?
    THANKS

I have been begging BEGGING for a SYSTEM-100 based Boutique (and I already have the full set!). Imagine how deliriously fun it would be to have a patchable, special two-unit Boutique and stand that replicated the functionality and sound of the 101-104 🤯 I am, however, very grateful for the extraordinary plugout version. Also, it sounds as if we chose the same plugouts for the S8. Juno-60 is a lovely alternative to the 106, and SH-2 earns a permanent spot on the S8 alongside its poly brethren

    Great video!
I’m absorbing all this information, still new to all this, would of got into it a lot sooner if only i didn’t become a heroin addict and sell all my gear.
Nearly 10 years clean and i’ve started to built a collection back up.
I first started with the Roland Aira range, TR8S, MX 1, TB 3 and the System 1 which i noticed is a plug out so could i potentially use what’s on the cloud using the System 1, using the editor?
When i heard you say it depends what you’ve got in your studio and what you want to do, i want to do melodic trance, synth wave and some trance classics.
I’ve also got the Akai MPC Force, Korg Modwave, Yamaha AN1x, Novation Mininova, Roland JD XI, SH 201 and the Korg Kaoss Pad KP3.
I know to link them all up i would need to set the MIDI clocks to each individual channel, what’s the best way to do this? Am i right in saying i’ll need something like the Kenton MIDI thru 12? Or will i need alot more?
I’m aware at least 2 of my synths have been featured on bad gear 🤣

I have the system 8 and hardly have used it. I am finding it hard to find where to get addon plugouts for it. Is it on Roland cloud? When I first got the synth roland gave me a free plugout, I can't even remember what one, maybe SH2 so I downloaded it and put the file on a chip to then put in the system 8 and the chip fell inside the synth haha. I was lucky and was able to retrieve the chip.
After that I have never tried getting any new plugout files. Roland's cloud and website is quite convoluted and confusing. Still can't find any actual plugout addons to get in the first place to even try and upgrade

Colin, could I ask since I cannot find this information anywhere, since you binned the original plugouts, does that mean they are gone forever or do they come back when you factory reset the System 8? Also, if you cancel your Roland Cloud membership does that mean the licences you rented are no longer valid? Once logged into my roland cloud account I registered a paid for system-8 lifetime key thinking I could download any plug-out for the system-8 only. So I selected Hardware/syntherizer/system-8. The only plugin I was able to download was the system-8 plug-in all the others plugins had the shopping cart $$$. Once download and installed the daw found the system-8 plugin. Up it flashed on the screen but no plugout option just a standalone vst. So from this I gather its a life time download with updates and maybe expansion patch for this vst only on PC?
