This was what really made Miami Vice stand out from other cop shows at the time, it was very dark and violent at times. It may seem tame by today's standards but some critics back in the day couldn't handle it.

One of the amazing things about Don Johnson at this time period was that he had absolutely no fear in his body whatsoever. If you go to 2:20 and slow the footage down to 0.25 speed, watch his neck, jaw and head. You can see that he doesn't even flinch in the slightest...bear in mind that this is a 45. caliber handgun and in person the enormous sound upon firing and jolting of the gun would make 99% of people flinch quite significantly. Even if they were experienced in the use of firearms and they had ear protection on, they would usually still flinch a bit. Don has no ear protection here and no blinking or flinching at all...nothing.

That's exactly the scene from Magnum PI that I immediately thought of when I watched this. Very, very similar. The villain rubbing the hero's nose in the fact that not only was he able to get away with his crimes, but also taunting the hero; that the hero's own morality and sense of honor prevent him from doing anything about it. And then the villain is proven wrong.
Makes me wonder if one show "borrowed" the idea from the other, both shows shared a writer, or both independently came up with the idea.

The thing is this whole season took place during a writer’s strike and the next episode, Mirror Image, was Sonny losing his memory and becoming a hit man where he tried to kill Tubbs and then he escapes by killing a crooked cop. The next season they let Jan Hammer go and Tim Truman was doing the music but the last two episodes of season 4 and first 2 episodes of season 5 were basically one long storyline of Crockett and IMO the best of the series and the most intense of any cop drama ever aired. The thing is, critics panned it because it was a writer’s strike and they went to the amnesia well and dragged it out. Fuck the critics though! Don Johnson played that shit cold! They introduced Julia Roberts to TV! Chris Cooper played the crooked cop! Tim Truman had a great song with vocals. Max Headroom was driving a Lamborghini SUV! The chick playing the girlfriend was married to Mickey Rourke at the time! There was a lot going on in those 4 episodes besides the awesome cinematography, action and music! I still remember when the show aired how NBC would put “In Stereo” at the bottom of the screen! Now I hear Vin Diesel is going to reboot the series. Let’s hope that happens!

I know, I even saw an interview with Don Johnson discussing it, but it doesn't take 4 years (and counting) even taking covid-19 into account to produce and release what will likely turn out to be nothing more than a 10 episode show. If, say, the pilot had been recorded and accepted by a distributor the series should have been released long ago and discussions for a second season should have been completed. (I believe Picard took around 2 years from conception to release on Amazon Prime). If the pilot had been rejected by distributors why don't we know about it and why are we even discussing it?

@ Miami Vice, You guys have to show the ENTIRE scene. Otherwise, younger viewers (under age 50) will think that Crockett murdered an unarmed criminal. For those who didn't see the original 1986 telecast, the crook has a pistol hidden under a newspaper he had on the table, and Crockett saw it (right next to the blended Margarita at 0:53). The crook was NOT unarmed. If they would have shown 10 more seconds of this scene, you would have seen the gun that the crook had hidden. I still remember seeing this as a 20 year old, back in 1986.

Wasn't Crockett carrying a Bren Ten 10mm handgun at some point in the show. I remember the Bren Ten pistol was new on the market then. There were articles about it in the biggest gun magazines. It used the newly created 10mm round. Some of the biggest gun experts were talking it up. To add to the hype, either the show producers obtained Bren Tens for the show, or the manufacturer donated them. Everyone wanted the new gun that Sonny Crockett was using, and that was being talked up by all the gun experts.
It was a big deal when the whole thing collapsed. The manufacturer was taking orders and money from people, but didn't have anywhere near the manufacturing capability to meet the demand. There were other problems too, which I can't remember the specifics of. I think that not only could the manufacturer not produce guns to fill orders; they couldn't produce spare parts, magazines, or complete repairs on guns returned for quality issues, either. Then they went bankrupt.
There was something of a backlash against the gun experts who had attach their names to the project, and who had pushed or recommended a new product that clearly wasn't ready for market. It was also somewhat detrimental to the acceptance of the new 10mm cartridge, when one of the (then) few guns chambered for it turned out to be a lemon.

The grip contour, accommodating a single-stack 9-round magazine, was a bit on the thin side for my tastes (more used to the 1911A1 in .45 ACP), but it was a great gun, and flat-shooting with my 155 gr. FMJ-FP’s over the max. spec load (7.4 gr. of Unique), and exceedingly accurate with a moly-coated 170 gr. LSWC with WST powder. Hand-loading is the most economical way to shoot the 10mm.
