Spiritual gifts can be abused, misused, and misunderstood, even to the point of distracting us from the one who gave them. The apostle Paul gives us an important reminder that God’s gifts are not toys for us to use as we desire but tools for us to use for His glory.

I spent 40 years in a charismatic congregation and heard much preaching on 1 Corinthians 14. The leadership definitely supported tongues as a private prayer language. We also had people give a word in an unknown language but there wasn’t always an interpretation. About 10 years after I came to Christ in that church I began to listen to people like pastor Davey and realized our leaders were a bit off.
