When you travel, everyone you meet is going to see you exactly once. You don't need a varied wardrobe (as you so correctly pointed out). Living out of your travel bag for a week at home is a GREAT idea. Kudos to Rick Steves for demonstrating this about 45 years ago.

I carry on only. And I’m a female who likes fashion and events. But my clothes when traveling are different than at home. More..basic maybe, but who am I trying to impress? I’ll never see these people again, and they don’t know me. It can be a hard mindset to get into, but worth it for less hassle.
And yes😄 I do the same thing with two colors, a small accent color pop or two, and everything mixes and matches.

7kg weight limit? That's not just cheap airlines.. it's nearly all of them now! Thanks for the useful ad for e-sim, that's on my list to explore today. I often travel super light/carry on only but this trip I'm travelling with a musical instrument that is too fragile to want to check in. It does fit in overhead luggage but is 'interesting' each check in as it's just over 7kg. YES re travel vest with multi secret pockets. Brilliant investment.
That means I'm now checking a bag, but still only carry -on size. Good discipline to not end up with excess crap. As for clothes/ shoes/ toiletries there are shops in every country! And often charity shops and second hand markets :) By saving weight with clothes/shoes, I carry supplements and things I do enjoy, like the occasional paper book.

I've been traveling carry-on only for almost 20 years and for the last 13 years I have been living in Southeast Asia. Most of the budget airlines here, such as AirAsia, limit you to one carry-on bag and one personal item that have a combined weight limit of 7 kilograms (a little less that 15.5 pounds). Most of the time they are relatively flexible about it but other times ... :) Over the years, I have learned to pack for the other times. Now my combined weight is never over 7 kg whether I am going for a long weekend or months long trips. And I always use a packing list. If an items isn't on the list, it doesn't go in the bag.
The right bag is essential since it can eat up a lot of your weight allowance. While I like the design of the Standard carry-on backpack you reviewed, I love the Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door Classic Back Door Bag. I have been using the same one for over a decade and it is still in great shape. One really important feature of the Rick Steves bag compared to the Standard bag is weight. Rick Steves bag weighs 2 pounds (0.9 kg) compared to the Standard bag at 3.7 pounds (1.7 kg). That is a big difference when every ounce counts. Other than weight (and price), both bags have similar features.
Being selective about what you carry is an ongoing process. Over the years, I have curated what I carry to the point that what I pack generally only varies depending on the climate I will be heading to. Even when I do winter in Hokkaido, I can still go in under 7 kg. What you save on checked bag fees will more than pay for some good quality products that you will use for years.

    • @ProjectUntethered
      @ProjectUntethered  Před 6 měsíci

Wow, that is seriously impressive! I don't think I'll ever get our long-term travel luggage under 7kg total, but we also carry laptops and some camera gear that adds up. And thanks for sharing that Rick Steves bag, it looks really affordable!

For those only wanting to do carry on, and know you’re going to do significant travel through the Asian Pacific region (Asia, Australia, New Zealand), consider seriously the weight of your empty packs right at the start. It’s no good having a well padded out, structured pack with all the bells and whistles, that weighs half or even a third of carry on weight limits of this region. The lighter your pack, the more breathing space you have for your tech and your gear, spread between your main pack and personal item bag. But also check what carry on restrictions your potential airlines through this region - some are strictly one bag 7kg, some are 2 bags of certain size up to 14kg in total, some you can upgrade to 10kg, some have size restrictions for personal item bag…

I also ship/mail souvenirs home, and usually some clothes along with it. Granted, all domestic, but even cross-country it’ll get there in a week or less IME, and the money cost is really much less than many think. Certainly nowhere near the $50-$60 for an extra bag (I always just carry on, so not sure about checked costs.) Used standard shipping services and mail, whichever office is convenient.
Way better than hauling it myself!
If I know I’ll be at my destination a couple days (and it seems reliable) I’ve often shipped my stuff there. Again, the cost is minimal and the increased ease is priceless.

Most of the bargain basement airlines in Asia have very cheap checked bag fees provided you pay for bags in advance - thinking you can bypass 7kg weigh limits and then paying at the counter after being caught by the counter airline representative can be very costly! Special note for photographers, some SE Asian countries like Bali prohibit tripods and monopods in carry on luggage - check in only. Best to keep a small foldable daypack or tote bag on hand if you are required to check the bag, so you can carry on your valuables and essentials with you.

Many good tips here. Especially on those „Just in case“ items.
In terms of clothing: Think „Outfits“ instead of „I want to bring THAT specific piece“. Because you will end up with a bunch of stuff that doesn’t really fit together. I have made that mistake and paid dearly for it. And while we are on the subject of clothes: avoid clothes that will draw attention to you. They can make you stand out like a sore thumb, also to some pretty unsavoury folks.
As for electronicals: if possible, get cables for your laptops and chargers that have local plugs. I hate travel adapters because they are mostly very bulky. And they sometimes block other outlets, can be bumped loose or just don’t make a good connection. For my laptop I have C5 Euro, US and UK cables (a.k.a. that 3-prong „Mickey Mouse“ cable) and for my camera chargers I have the corresponding C7 cables (a.k.a. the „shaver“, „Figure 8“ or „Shotgun“ plug) in my travel stuff box at home and can grab whichever one I need and leave the adapters at home. For Macbook chargers, they make a travel kit where you can swap out the plug on the charger. Pretty neat system.
Oh, and: Unless you are really an avid reader, do not bring books. They are bulky and heavy and take up tons of space. If you don’t normally read, you won’t be starting that habit on a plane or at the airport. Even if you are and avid reader, get an e-ink based e-reader. The battery lasts for weeks and you can get hundreds of books on there. Well worth the savings in weight and bulk IMO.
Get good Noise Cancelling headphones. Those are a godsend. Trust me. I was unsure at first whether to shell out that money. But one 14 hour flight later I thought they were worth every single penny.
Lastly: for really long haul flights, get compression socks. They help and take up almost no space at all. You won’t want to (or be able to) walk properly with those swollen feet / ankles.

3:05 on a side note, those overhead bins typically have big labels that read "MAX WEIGHT: ..." with a value that corresponds to about 12kg per cabin bag that you could fit in the compartment. If the airline's maximum is 8 or 10 kg, it's not a big deal to be 2kg overweight, but if the airline's maximum is already 12 and everyone is 3-4kg overweight, this might end up being dangerous. I heard of a least one plane crash where a (minor) contributing factor was an excess of overhead luggage, due to how it affected the barycenter of the plane during a botched go-around or take-off (sadly I don't remember the flight number).
3:22 at CDG you often have airport staff that weighs trolleys right before the security queue, at least at Terminal 2F. Last time I flew there, I even saw the baggage weight check guy call back someone he apparently forgot to check right from the security conveyor belt (he had already started to unpack for the security checks). He turned out to be overweight and had to go to the check-in counter...

@@debbiethomas2622 Nope, hadn't heard of this one. The one I was thinking of was, as far as I remember, an airliner going TOGA then pitching up too much (engines are low, overhead baggage are obviously high so they push the center of gravity up, so it aggravates the pitch-up situation) and stalling.
So of course a main factor was that the pilots screwed up, but the center of gravity made it worse for them.

I'm considering a trip to India that will include an internal flight on Indigo Airlines. Researching their carry-on requirements I discovered they prohibit loose (i.e. spare) batteries in both checked and carry-on bags. Professional and amateur photographers always bring spare batteries for their cameras. I've never encountered this prohibition on any airline, and that includes Air India. Curious if anyone has ever encountered such a prohibition.

He then explained to TSA that the rules were different for wheelchairs and mine met the rule.

2 questions: if I’m way overweight can I just pay the 75 dollars and be on my way? Or would I have to pay and still rearrange everything and maybe wear extra cloths like you did in this video……..2nd question, I plan on traveling all over the world for the next 2 years, what international health insurance should I get? Does safety wing have that or do they JUST have travel insurance? *im new to traveling*

    • @ProjectUntethered
      @ProjectUntethered  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Good questions!
1 - You'd pay and be on your way. Depending on the prices for your different solutions, it may make more sense to just buy a checked bag and send your overweight carry-on as a checked bag (instead of paying the overweight fee for the carry on). The reason we re-arranged everything and wore a ton of stuff was so that we'd only have to pay for 1 overweight bag instead of 2.
2 - Safetywing recently released a new plan that is more like an international health insurance plan. This is what I'm currently testing out, and I recently made a few claims, so interested to see how it goes. I made a video about it here in case it's helpful! czcams.com/video/PNJmn1SAH9Q/video.html
Cigna and GeoBlue are some other popular ones, but for my specific situation, they were more expensive (and the plan limits were lower).
I used Safetywing's normal travel insurance plan as my only health insurance for several years and just recently upgraded to the Nomad Health plan, but you'd have to compare the differences (which I touch on in the video) to decide which (or any) make sense for you.
I hope this is helpful! :)

Pack your bag and try living out of it for a week. Not bad advice if you don't work.
I use to check a bag every time. At some point (probably the London Underground) I decided I was tired of schlepping around stuff I never used. You can always just buy it as long as it's a small thing. I really wished I taken better shoes for Arthur's Seat though. Lesson learned. Comfort and practicality over style.

The AirAsia lady also told me a couldn’t wear my weight, but that is absolutely ridiculous (luckily we got a different agent after we repacked). Who are they to judge how many layers I want to wear or what I want to have in my pockets? I can’t say for sure, but I highly doubt that when you buy a ticket, that there is any written policy that tells you how much clothes and much weight you can have in your clothes pockets. On the other hand, if you’re gonna wear all that stuff, it’s probably not fair if your plan is to just take it all off and stuff it in your carry on as soon as you pass the check in counters haha (which is exactly what I did). I realize I agreed to the carry on weight limits when I bought the ticket, but I think most people don’t realize how little some of these limits are when they buy. I could be wrong, but these tiny limits don’t seem like they’re set for safety reasons - it’s just to gouge ya.

If you're only changing flights, make sure that you'll be staying airside. Otherwise, you will have to go through customs, immigration and security. Check with your airline that you won't have to go through any of these procedures whilst changing. People can get very nasty surprises.

People think it's easy for me to travel with a carry-on only 🤣🤣 yeah it is and it isn't, my backpack is easily pushing over 30lbs ≈ 15kg any day, and it's mostly 90%+ camera gear and 1 laptop 😎📸
For me to fit my clothes together to my camera stuff that'd take what? Maybe a 40 or even 50L backpack 😅 perhaps one of those fancy roll top backpacks.
Now, I admid I'm a bit of an overpacker, I'd probably bring those extra 2 lenses that I probably may not need, than to need something and not have it.
Going down to clothing I've changed the all black t-shirt outfits, I generally take about 5 t-shirts + the one I'm wearing (2 black, 2 burgundy, 2 teal blue) just 1 button shirt for the occasional more formal meeting or dinner. Then I pack 1 to 3 shorts depending on the destination, but generally just 2 pants that fit and stretch for comfort.
1 rain jacket, 1 general jacket, generally 1 walking shoes, and 1 pair or sandals/flip-flops, I don't pack a formal/"better looking" shoes unless I know I absolutely will need it. We don't always get time to do laundry so I pack at least 7 underwears, and 7 pairs of socks, I might get away with less socks, but 7 is a good number to keep my nose and everyone else's happy 🤣👍
In toiletries things get much simpler, 1 toothbrush, 1 toothpaste (sensitive teeth, so can't skip this one), 1 hair trimmer/beard trimmer, 1 tiny nail clipper with no pointy nail file (or tsa will confiscate it, happened more than once 😅) 1 thin hair brush. Things that don't go well shopping abroad 1 solid shampoo bar, most shampoo make my hair look like some homeless dude 🤣🤣🤣 so gotta be picky on this one, and deodorant, I've had such bad luck with shopping deodorant abroad, as a person who likes to walk a lot and not stink that's an important item, so I bring 1 deodorant from home generally last 30 to 45 days. I may bring a travel size perfume, but since I'm not a big perfume user that's not a big deal if left at home.
One thing I definitely want to upgrade is my water bottle, yes I prefer my water bottle insulated so I never have to drink warm unrefreshing water, but I may be willing to sacrifice that to a water filtered bottle. Getting sick while traveling is the peak of not fun and water is the number 1 reason of most travel related sicknesses. Some places you can't even trust bottled water, so a filter can go a long way, I've seen people using UV light water sanitation machines, but I don't feel super confident on those for whatever reason.
Entertainment gets boiled down to 1 travel size Quran, 1 Kindle with several e-books, 1 Phone, and 1 laptop, no need for anything else really.
And all the rest is electronics, camera stuff, cables, batteries, adapters, and the whole shabang. And medication, never forget medication for all sorts of everyday problems, from headaches to diarrhea, got pack those medicines.
My one hard time is that I'm an edc guy, and not being able to carry my pocket knife sucks 😅😅 yeah that's a me problem, but knives are handy tools, but a no go for air travel unless you have a checked luggage, yet I've had tsa steal 2 of my multi-tools and 2 knives from my checked luggage and that's not right according to them, and the claim process, when there is one, is hardly worth it, so either pack stuff you don't mind replacing, and absolutely don't pack anything with emotional value to it.
I've lost a Swiss army multi-tools to tsa that came down from family and that one hurt until today.
I'm probably missing things, hence why I'm a big believer in having a packing list. I'm tired of leaving personal items in hotels, transportation or otherwise.
Way too much to read here so let's stop it already 🤣👍
I 99% of the times travel with family, so my wife and I tag team with packing, we carry things I think the family might need but not everyone need their own, so that reduces overall luggage. With the kids now we try to stick to 2 checked luggages half luggage for me and my boy, the other half to my daughter, and 1 full luggage to my wife, and every last extra lb or kg goes to her extras 🤣🤣🤣 before my boy was born it was like 1 quarter of a luggage to me, and the rest for the girls 😂😂😂😂😂

Wow thanks for taking the time to share all these tips!
Haha yeah my carry on was also 15kg and the limit was 7 (luckily they didn’t weigh my personal item which was also heavy!). It’s insane to think that their limits are 7kg for a carry on and personal item COMBINED. Unless you’re packing feathers, I don’t even think you’d be able to even fill your luggage with normal stuff without it being over - it’d have to be like half full.
I also have been thinking about a filtered water bottle. Sounds super handy but I don’t know if there are any good ones that don’t require you to suck super hard and drink slowly, which I’m too impatient to do 😅
I also agree with the extra underwear, although recently I’ve been washing my underwear quickly when I shower each night, and I’ve noticed that if I do this, I never use all 7 of them.
      Thanks again for sharing!

All while talking about avoiding 70$ airline charge. In a once a year voyage that we may or may not afford...

As a Finn who has worked/lived for EU/US companies in the Nordics, Baltic's and in the US for long periods of time (sometimes 1+ years) - here my advice: Have a huge primary package (that is within the permit) as your primary lockage which has all your basic needs. Have a normal carry-on to your plane that includes all your IT equipment etc. If you have medication - you can have them where-ever you need. Remember to have a prescription for them (both US and EU are accepted).
Travelling between the US and the EU is very easy. I would advice NOT to travel to any middle-eastern countries.
ps. Don't drag all your things to the cabin and don't be afraid to have your massive bag go to the cargo. The 'additional costs' are only €20-€50 at the most and if you travel as a company you don't pay any of these costs.

These are some good thoughts! Now that I think about it more, I realize some of this advice depends on how long you’re traveling for. If it’s just a short vacation and a return flight, you probably don’t have to overthink things too much. But if you’re traveling long term and will be flying a couple times per month for several months, then those fees can add up!

Why would you not advice anyone to travel to Middle Eastern countries? There are several great destinations in the Middle East, and several more that are highly underrated, don't suffer of over tourism, and prices are super inexpensive.
Whoever never traveled to Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, and many others are missing out big time in some of the best world's culinary, hospitality, historical sights, natural beauty and so much more.
Not to mention the big ones like the UEA, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Some of the most underrated immaculate beaches are in Saudi Arabia.

Also need to mention that the world's best airlines are also from the Middle East, you don't need to travel business class to feel the luxury while traveling in the Middle East.

Usually the cheapest eSIM option for heavy data users who want unlimited data. But if you’re a light data user, I agree - there are less expensive options. Planning to do a big roundup video comparing them all soon!

Maybe just stop being cheap and pay for checked luggage. I have no idea how people have the money to spend money on flights, hotels, food, taxis, entertainment for weeks away but will limit themselves to a few items of clothes to avoid a bag fee.

Umm for one some airlines are not trustworthy so the chances of losing your stuff is higher. Another reason is waiting for your bag at the baggage claim sometimes takes forever for a number of reasons. Also why not, unless your explorering the Yukon in the winter packing heavy clothing or like 3 pairs of boots is waste of space. Keep in mind I'm usually just traveling with a backpack plus a garment duffle bag for my dress/work clothes.

For the past ten years I have been clipping my spare shoes to the outside of my carry-on backpack. I have never encountered a problem and it makes it easy to clear TSA security screening.

Nice! I guess my worry would be that the airline would make my fit my carry on in their sizing box. And if they didn’t fit inside my bag, then they’d charge me. I’ve never had this actually happen, but it seems like something they’d do haha
