Why I also rejoice at this moment is because it shows how our flaws are enforsed by trauma and bad influence. One of the main factors Brad even became an addict is the PTSD of his awful childhood. And there wasn't anyone around to support him. He tries to be a better person, he genuinelly wants to, but the world made him a broken man, and it's barely even possible to get yourself out of this pit of misery without help.

True. Brad was overprotective but to an understandable and _almost_ rational degree. I mean, let's see:
You have a little kid who's a girl. The world needs to be repopulated and if you *dare* let her be discovered, shit will hit the fan. Consider also his memories relating to his sister.
I honestly think I would do as he did, even though this may not have been the right way to go on about things.
The thing that I criticized most about Brad's dad behavior was forcing Lisa to kill to learn how to fight. Ironically, that is the decision that both makes her an insensitive monster AND a powerful warrior by the end.

The funny thing is everyone, particularly Sticky and Rick, were preaching about saving the world and Brad not being good for Buddy, but Brad did have one point. Buddy's just a girl; she's not even reached adulthood yet.
They grew impatient and rushed to a conclusion, and it's true Brad was keeping her ignorant even for her age, but there was a good chance she physically wasn't ready to 'save humanity' and it's perfectly possible Brad would've been more supportive had she grown more.
All delivering her to Rando before she was ready was going to do was change parents; it didn't accelerate the process or anything.
Him teaching her to fight was simply a necessary step for surviving in a destroyed world. Damaging, but she needed it and would probably have died without it.

I wished you talked about some of Brad's backstory a bit more (like during the flashbacks). Because I think a really big moment for his character was when we see him teaching martial arts to kids.
For those who don't know, spoilers. We start the scene with Brad doing painkillers, showing that he's had a drug problem for a long time and not just after the flash. We see that he shirks responsibility (or decided to bring the kids to the park to get his fix) and he dismisses the kids (I think it's important to note that he still tells them to practice their kata after homework. It shows that he still cares about martial arts and what the kids get out of it, but he still prioritizes his addiction). Then he walks off and finds a kid hiding behind a tree. The kid looks somewhat skinny and has a bad stutter. He's been watching him and Brad's class for a while now and was interested in joining. Brad says it's fine if he wants to join but the kid says he can't because he doesn't have money. And to that, Brad says he could join anyway.
To me this scene shows that Brad, despite or because of his poor upbringing, is still an empathetic person. He understands that other people need help sometimes. That's probably how he got a lot of people to join him. And this also works with him turning more psychotic and focused on Buddy, because people you recruit later either force themselves into your party, or Brad forces them to help him. Because of the joy, he only focuses buddy, the one person he empathizes with the most.
TL;DR, Brad has always been a decent person that struggled with his inner demons long before the story of Lisa began. The circumstances of the world and his relationship with Buddy turned him into a monster with the best intentions.

I’d argue that maybe leaving Buddy with Rando wouldn’t have ended too badly at that point, but otherwise I completely agree. Brad’s entire reasoning makes sense when you look at his life and the current state of that world.
Brad is a broken man who knows how awful people can be, and was trying to save Buddy from it. That meant hiding her away, teaching her to fight and being extremely protective. There was never going to be a good option for caring for Buddy.

It should be noted Brad's desire to save Buddy is also fueled by a selfish need to redeem himself over what happened with Lisa, and thus even his most nole goals are tinged by a darker, less noble motive.
brad was always a selfish drug addict, its just that selfishness gradually overshadowed his nicer aspects, and by the end it was too late and he ended up becomonign a monster.
But what did you expect in the post apocalypse of Olathe? noone's completely innocent, everyone has their demons, and many do fall to more wicked personas because of The Flash.

For all Brad's faults, for how much he's a product of his father, it's hard for me to say he did a whole lot wrong by his own hand. The apocalypse is no place to raise a child. His ultimate failure was his assumption, fueled by Joy, granted, that his Father couldn't change, that his father wasn't hurt as deeply as he was, that his father didn't also want redemption. In the end, Buddy is still a kid. Is it so selfish to want to protect her until she's an adult? Surely there will still be men for her to be with once she's well and grown, once she's able to make that decision, and not just be used and abused by the countless perverts who just want to slake their twisted desires, under the guise of protecting the future of Humanity.
Brad did a lot wrong. He killed, tortured, and destroyed, all for a girl who wasn't even really his, who he was far too cruel to. But for all he did wrong, can you blame him? Meanwhile the group of people who kidnapped buddy are from what I've gathered, the few that are sane, they want the best of humanity and wouldn't harmed buddy, their objective wasn't to use Buddy as a sex slave but as an opportunity for humanity to survive and to maybe even give buddy a free life.

I was sitting with my wife, god rest her soul, sipping on sweet lemon tea. I believe it was homemade by my sweet wife, God rest her soul. Or wait... Maybe she bought it from the store in a bottle. You know, like a plastic bottle? Well hold on now, that would be ridiculous to buy a bottle of sweet lemon tea, then transfer the contents into a glass. Why not just drink it from the bottle? I guess maybe so she could put ice in the glass? But then again, making tea homemade would be just as time consuming, if not more! That sneaky bitch... Anyway, I'll save that story for later! So, I'm sitting on my porch drinking sweet lemon tea. From a glass of course, ho ho! When suddenly... A great strangeness fills my body... Something was wrong... I've lived many years, and I've never felt something like this before. Do you know what it was? Yup! It was my rocking chair! That wooden son of a gun stopped rocking! So I looked down and realized a little rock had gotten caught beneath my chair! A rock under my rocking chair! What a day! I decided it was time for bed, I had had a little bit too much excitement for one day! Hoho! I slid into my jammies, brushed my teeth, and said my prayers. As I was climbing into bed I noticed my wife, God rest her soul, brushing her hair in the bathroom. As I peered across the hall my body swelled up with emotion...
"Why can't I be married to an attractive woman?" "Is it me?" "My bank account?" I'm a tall guy, I workout forty minutes a week... Is that not enough? Now my neighbor at the time, Tom Forknight, was very short. His wife, Karen Forknight-Plateburger... Yeah, one of THOSE women. Well, she was more attractive than my wife. I'd say she was a soft six, whereas my wife was a hard four. What's the deal? I thought women liked tall men? Why was Karen with him? Anyway my horse of a wife, God rest her soul, crawled into bed next to me. She decided to leave the bedside light on so she could read her book. It was one of her romance novels again... Give me a break... As if I don't already feel inadequate enough... Not only do I have to compete with Tom, now I have to deal with these fictional hunks! Ay yai yai! At this point I had already suppressed the urges of intimacy, I rolled over and tried to sleep. Her bedside light was only of minor annoyance. I was able to drift off... Then I woke up to a big flash of light. That's about it. I can tell by the way you're walking away that you don't want to leave... If you really want to hear another story I'll tell you. Once upon a hot summer night. Sometime in July... Was it July? My local grocery store sells really good eggs in July. I don't know why. Do chickens operate better in heat? Fireworks maybe? I don't know. I don't want to get off topic. Point is, the eggs that Summer were marvelous! Anyway, my wife and I, God rest her soul, went to a BBQ that night. It was held at Dale Spooner's house. Well, his backyard... Conny Spooner doesn't want people in her home, I think she's just an uptight bitch. So at this BBQ I see none other than... That's right, Tom Forknight... Now earlier in the day my wife, God rest her soul, had made potato salad for the BBQ. Personally I hate potato salad, I'm a mashed kind of fellow. Hoho! So I sat in the TV room avoiding her till the BBQ. Once we were at the party, I made sure to distance myself from my dumb potato bitch wife. God rest her soul, I just didn't want anyone to think I would associate with someone that would bring a potato salad! Anyway, Tom and his above mediocre wife were already there. And get this, they brought a fruit salad! With whipped cream! The nerve of those Forknights! Needless to say I gave my wife, God rest her soul, a couple choice words About whipped cream! Versus potato salad! God dammit! Son of a bitch! A real tongue lashing! Geez, you're kind of smothering me. I'll talk to you later."

He's lashed out at my brother before and even to the point where my mom threatened to call the police on him if he hurt him again. He's always really gentle but sadly he has a darker side due to growing up with an abusive father and a mother that was helpless and didn't stand up for herself nor her children. He is starting to grow angrier like his dad though now that he's getting older, and tbh it scares me.

The creator of this game mentioned in an interview that the original Lisa game was inspired by his ex-girlfriend, she was abused by her father and she never got over it. He hated her father because of it, and he said it affected their relationship pretty badly and they didn't stay together. Knowing that, I view Brad as an analog for the creator and Buddy is his second chance to try to fix and protect her, but as we see with the end of the game, Buddy never wanted any of that. Maybe that's what happened in his relationship. It's a reflection on what his ex-girlfriend needed and how he might have failed her.
Also, that part I mentioned about hating her Father? Remember what happens to Marty in the game?
I might be be projecting too much of what I *think* the creator was thinking when he made this game but I think it makes it that much more personal and relatable, and thereby a more profound experience when playing the game.

@@shacka95 i haven't watched Bojack myself but from what little i heard about it, i think something besides likability for a "bad" character to be good is also "reasoning", as well as other things. Someone can be a total dick but watching someone bad feel guilt or having some moments of calmness mixed in makes a character feel a little more real, even if the intention isn't for you to like that character at all. Which is something YIIK misses on as well as Stranger things (though YIIK does this worse in my opinion). Giving a character a chance to react to different things in different ways helps them feel more real. Even abusers in real live aren't mean 100% of the time and can be nice to people to get things in their favor. BoJack at points openly shows sadness, happiness, and other emotions besides hurting people that's believable and feels lively where Alex will say mean things that feel so out of place that they feel unrealistic.
You can write vial characters but there's a fine line between "this character is interesting and i want to know more" and "this is getting painful to care about this character because i hate them so much and couldn't care less about this story anymore". Even though Alex from YIIK and Bojack both do some pretty bad things, the writing is so different that you get different reactions to these characters. Both can remind you of real people but that shouldn't be the "Only" thing pulling a character like that to be good writing.
It can also go the other way too. Having characters that are overly nice to the point of being obnoxious or too talkative can make a player uninterested in them as well. People like that exist in real life, but if you're making a game where you need to deal with that character for hours a good writer needs to keep that in mind. Or any kind of extreme characteristic honestly.
using a variety of emotions no matter what "type" of character you are writing can help you feel more attached to them and help them feel a little more real. though of course what characters you like is pretty subjective, but since so many people dislike Alex there's a large chance something is wrong with the writing or his character.

Brad isn’t an awful father, though. It’s the world that’s awful; he’s just doing the best he can. There can be no idyllic childhood in Olathe...He merely taught Buddy the law of the wasteland whilst trying to protect her. I think he’s a good father, but Buddy is too headstrong for her own good.
That’s why I like Lisa the Joyful. It’s Buddy realizing that Brad did the best he could with the cards he was dealt. Buddy is the last female human on earth. I see a lot of Jesus parallels with her, complete with rebelling against god, and the responsibility of saving humanity.
She simply wasn’t destined for an idyllic childhood.

But instead of caring about the world he only cared about doing what he wanted: to atone. Now Brad does good and when you do the Joyless run he makes it a point he's trying to improve himself for buddy. But in the end he takes it too an extreme that makes him a monster, killing the closest people to him. He strikes buddy in rage when buddy tried to protect Marty. He repeated the cycle of his father by giving into anger at the moment. But we understand why because Marty is legitimately a worse person then brad. He sexually and physically abused his only children. Brad is just so fuckin deep I could write a 10 page essay on his depth god this game is the best.

Playing through Lisa and deciding that it's Buddy's fault, actually, for running away and making it harder for Brad to be a perfect dad has got to be one of the grossest interpretations I've ever seen, especially considering the actual game resoundingly rejects it. Brad isn't a good father. It's not his fault he isn't a good father, but that doesn't make him a good father. His trauma has poisoned him, and in ways he never intended, he passed that trauma on to Buddy. And that's tragic, and maybe unavoidable in a world as traumatized as Olathe, but nevertheless Brad hurt Buddy, which is something no father should do to their child. Ever.

I’m not blaming anything on Buddy, though. All of this was inevitable when you have someone as hellbent on redeeming himself as Brad, and someone as headstrong as Buddy. If sulfur and phosphorus come together in nature and combust, there’s no one to blame. It was only the natural consequences of the world acting out its role.
Olathe is a character by itself. It’s a cruel one. It’s a character that makes horrible demands of the people that live in it. This is why I think Buddy’s character turn in Joyful is nothing short of genius. It’s her taking out her rage and trauma on everything that stands in her way. You could say that Brad was the catalyst, sure, but a more apt catalyst than Olathe you will never find.
In a perfect world, a father would never hurt their child. But parents hurt their own children in ways no one can even see. You can damage a child with kindness. You can damage a child with discipline. You can damage a child with education. Children often damage themselves. It is impossible to come out of childhood unscathed, because people are born from fire and tribulation.
Now take the average human existence, and drop it in Olathe? I don’t think I need to go any further.
There’s no perfect parent, and Brad certainly isn’t a perfect parent. But he tried. And he went the extra mile. And he loved Buddy. To me, that is more or less the same as being a “good” dad.
What an absolutely phenomenal game that allows us to have this sort of discussion, huh?

Something I think would’ve helped cement the main argument for your video is (SPOILERS)
Brad had the opportunity to be a good dad with Dusty. I don’t know if you’ve played Lisa the Joyful but Rando/Dusty still sees Brad as an exemplar father even after his neglect and lack of empathy (much like how Marty treated Brad). Rando understands where Brad was coming from during the events of the painful, however Buddy still sees Brad as the flawed person he was. The funny thing is, Buddy essentially becomes a Chloe or Alex type character in Lisa the Joyful. Her upbringing and major messiah complex cause her to become an extremely violent and uncaring individual, to the point of killing a tribe of pacifists just because they get in her way of being the strongest warlord in Olathe, and she justifies this by claiming how she doesn’t want to adhere to her role as the sole source of repopulation, and if she does have to repopulate she wants to rule while doing it. I don’t understand how these big budget games can have such flat uninteresting characters yet a 10 buck RPG maker game has some of the most engaging and interesting characterization I’ve ever seen.

Something I'd like to add (SPOILERS AAAYYY)
Not only Dusty, but also Terry was unintentionally Brad's other form of redemption. It's heavily suggested that before meeting Brad, Terry was dealing with crippling loneliness and depression and that his hints were his method of coping, but once he met Brad he described it as being "the best day of his life", so Brad changed his life for the better. And yet it's very likely that Brad killed Terry for trying to stop him.

@@Grundleburger That seriously is dependent on the player's interpretation of Brad and how they choose to play him. Because for me personally, I tried to play Brad as morally good as possible. I never sacrificed anyone for example, or let anyone die during the Russian Roulette. There are also times where you can just do the right thing, like with Rooster you can blackmail him into joining you but I just let him have his prized hen, I let Bo reunite with his brother, and I didn't force Crisp into my party. There also times where your party members can get kidnapped and Brad can choose to pay a ransom to get them back safely. So for me personally, I kind of saw Brad as rather selfless for his party. It's Buddy that's a whole another story though.

Bruh the lackluster writing of Buddy in Joyful is so disappointing when you compare it to Painful. But apparently like, after Austin Jorgensen had made Painful (and the stretch goal to make Joyful had been reached) he was like *ehh fuck it I don't really wanna do this anymore but I have to because I said I would*, and it shows. There's been Buddy-centric fanfiction written that makes her a lot more complex and likable than she was in the game. Also about why big budget games can have such terrible characters and indie rpgs can be awesome, I think with indie games it's moreso a labor of love and because you aren't dealing with the bureaucracy of a big company and too many cooks in the kitchen and having to try to make a game that appeals to a broad audience, these indie rpgs can take bigger risks and it pays off in the long run.

My favourite choice in this game has to be when u enter the 3rd Crossroad after u are given the choice between sacrificing your ENTIRE party and Buddy’s nipple. Most people would have choose to let Buddy lose a piece of herself for their favourite team combo but for those that chose to have their team executed for Buddy’s safety, you’re given another choice by Buzzo literally a few seconds later between losing what could potentially be your second arm or ALL your items. And the third choice “Ask why he’s doing this.” causes Buzzo to cut BOTH your arm off and take all your stuff. Of course, Brad was a poor father, he should've educated her about the outside world better, not just keep her in the house like that. In the end you have a kid who of course runs away that may very well end up in the hands of a bunch of perverted sickos. Sometimes you just have to tell your kid "no" when they want to do something that you know full well is stupid even if they hate you for it.

The best thing he could have done, was to give Buddy to Rando. But how could he have possibly known Rando was trustworthy, or powerful enough to protect her?
He doted on her, and protected her, and it led to her hating his controlling nature, and by the sequel, turning her into a psychopath with a serious messiah complex.
He tried to make her smile, by throwing her into the air... And he dropped her.

The sheer horror of his background couldn't not mold him, and I think anyone who has struggled with depression or anxiety and found themselves faced with dependency issues (or at least knows someone who has faced similar problems) will see a little more than just game tropes or irreverence in the story.
It's funny how Earthbound and this game are bound to each other creatively when they're the direct opposite of each other thematically. Earthbound conveys wonder and curiosity about the world with a respect for innocence in the face of it's absence. LISA is about adult disillusionment, the depressing difficulty of being a moral person, and the weight of a parent's role in a child's life.
