- What do you think? Are there easier Total War campaigns and/or factions than the ones I've spoken about today?
Total War games for obvious reasons can be quite easy to handle whether it’s AI issues or not well designed mechanics that don’t cause any stress or factions that are just super over-powered versus the rest. That doesn’t mean that every single campaign in these games is going to be easy but it does mean you will very likely have a comfortable and in some cases a bit of a boring time.
In today's video I tackle the top 5 games in the series are the easiest and most comfortable to play from Thrones of Britannia to OG Rome to Medieval 2. I talk factions, mechanics, AI behaviour and more and hopefully I've come to a list that you agree, and if not I'd love to hear what you think in the comments below!

you gave my response here with info about APETI a Heart then you deleted it ...
😥😥😥
why, mi amore? why ?
💔
Ohh mate I think it was because it had a link, YT deletes comments with links
@@TheTerminatorGaming
oh OK ...the YT censure again.
It was about APETI mod
A Proper Empire - Terra Incognita
-
Very solid mod with many features that are implemented in today's TW games: Recruitment limitation and true impact of population growth, AoE - Area of Effect response of units (thus smarter BAI ) Reworked Likes/dislikes of Nations to simulate Historical and regional issues etc.
Ex: colonial units are limited by population and European units that are in the colonies cannot retrain to full numbers and thus have to be transported back to Europe or bring new European units to replenish them.
I strongly recommend it !
Plus if one plays as France and gets the Revolution it changes the uniform colors from White to Blue and that, at least for me, was a BIG YES (lol)
Anyway, love your TW videos (any video actually !)
❤
I gotta say playing as Lithuania in the Teutonic order campaign was a never ending fight against heavily armored crusaders and mongol horse archers. I made steady progress, but it was an exhilarating grind.
I played as lithuania and in 2 real days conquered more then half europe but then i got bored
@@kostasvaicekauskas5164 In the normal campaign or the Teutonic campaign? You only get northeastern europe in the teutonic campaign.
Scotland was pretty hard too in MTW2
I love playing as the medieval panzers in the name of god
@@simonsalgueiro6217 aehm sry, no i played on vh/vh an it was an ez fun experience
I completely missed how passive Rome 2 AI could be. I started a DEI campaign as Rome, and once I had secured italia I marched north and found that Capua had been taken by the Mediolanum gauls, and that Massalia had declared war and they were fighting between eachother. I was actually shocked to see the AI do something outside of kinda stay where it is.
DEI obviously makes Rome 2 harder, at least initially before you get polybian reforms, but having to wait over a winter for their two armies to clash felt really engaging and actually strategic.
I'm largely playing W3TW right now (with SFO mod, the only rival TW mod to DEI imo) and the anti-player bias is obvious as you see enemies force march through other enemies lands just to attack you. I understand it's for difficulty's sake, but seeing things like Massalia try to expand made my Rome 2 campaign feel like I was a player in the world and not the main character, very investing.
Yeah I would say mods like Rome 2 DEI do tend to make the AI more aggressive overall. I mean as Rome trying to take on Carthage is a complete ****show. The DEI devs have done wonders for how the AI behaves in certain ways
Top 5 Hardest Total Wars! I think Empire Total War playing as the Ottoman Empire is one of the hardest campaigns in the series. Every faction on the map declares War against you within the first few turns. Your provinces are poor and undeveloped, armies are composed of trash units, and enemies are coming from all sides. It's virtually impossible to even survive on higher difficulty levels. But makes for a compelling campaign!
My first war against them was a disappointment, they were upgraded peasants at best except for a few units that either died or fled after killing the weak troops
I took most of egypt and the holy land before having a real challenge
shogun 2 is not ez at all , at least in darth mod
Great vid! Rome 1 felt too easy even for me back then, and I was a real beginner at that time. Despite this, I loved it.
Next time it could be TOP5 medieval MODs for TW games, top5 fantasy MODs, top5 ancient era MODs or TOP5 stronges units
Great suggestion!
I love playing long campaigns and i won mine as julii before the civil war even ended, i wanted to create something like the real empire and it was over when i took the western part + germania
you should do this but with easiest factions in most popular mods, also great video
That’s coming up soon ;) and thank you!
In DEI it would definitely be Rome
My easiest by far was Fall of Samurai. Once you get enough artillery units its a pure destruction from there. And yes it was still very fun.
Yeah, FotS artillery is broken as hell.
It's so good to see you back
Medieval 2 doesn't give the AI any combat modifiers on the higher difficulties, which makes them super easy relative to the other TW games
Shogun 2 also gives no combat modifirs to the AI, doesn't mean it makes the game easy though.
@@captainnyet9855 Shogun 2 difficulty is mainly on the campaign map. Every neighbor (including allies) wants a piece of your land.
@@captainnyet9855 Shogun 2 is only hard because of Realm Divide. Take that away and it's no longer one of the hardest TW games even on Legendary.
I'd personally put Medieval 2 over Rome, the playable factions feel much more balanced imo. I recently played a Scotland campaign and I thought it would be much tougher than it ended up being given that it's probably the faction with the hardest start. However, Scotland still has access to Mailed and Feudal Knights and that's all I really needed to really get myself established, hell I rekt the English with just a bunch of Mailed Knights supported by Generals while also hiring the powerful Mercenary Crossbowmen. Compare that to playing Rome with a faction like Numidia which is just pure pain
tbf... thats true every single m2tw faction is atleast GOOD compares to RTW where you have factions like numidia
I love the idea of this new series, best of luck brother and good to have you back.
Thanks! ❤️
England in Med 2 has got to be one of the easiest factions in the series, as soon as you conquer the British Isles and take Paris you’ve got so much money you don’t know what to do with it all lol
The games that have the easiest campaign are Empire, Rome 1, Rome 2 and Shogun 2. The hardest one are Medieval 2, Rome 1(Barbarian expansion), Attila Total war and Three Kingdoms Total War.
I saw on Steam that someone is developing an Empire TW mod set from 1815-1915 and he had suposedly already finished alot of the main factions There is just a picture and some description but it might be something to look into. Just throwing this nugget of info out there if anyone is interested.
What’s the name of the mod?
In Rome II vanilla, artillery ships have an incorrect accuracy value given to them, which makes them insanely accurate, many mods however fix this
Damn, I must be one hell of a noob then. In Rome II, I keep losing legendary campaigns even as Rome, and with Rome Remastered I feel like Very Hard battle difficulty makes the enemy units too powerful for me to handle.
Btw, collectively I have over a thousand hours in these games; I spent an especially insane amount of time playing Rome 1/Remastered
Your units just run away as soon as they make contact with the enemy especially phalanx Inuits.
Thrones was my first TW and was a ton of fun as basically a tutorial
Terminator talking about Medieval 2's AI: "The AI is passive during war."
*Milan would like to know your location*
Great vid dude.
Thanks! ❤️❤️

Meanwhile me struggling to start a grand campaign:
Whats the mod being used in the Medieval 2 Clip? AKA 7:08
In vanilla Rome 2, it is utterly pestering to have banditry as you can barely have every army and fleet in every province you own despite having maxed out the needed temples, sanitation and communal ( yellow ) buildings. Is there an effective way to suppress the chances of banditry or do I just live with it ?
Also, I noticed that Carthage almost always get food shortages. I eventually change all commercial provinces to have trading ports. There's not even a temple or a special building ( Eastern administration grey ) building that even helps them produce/multiply the food production or reduce consumption. Is there a way or a mod to combat this without swapping to fishing ports ?
Fair to say, any game gets boring after a while. I enjoyed your take on these titles. To add to Rome 2, I always go into a campaign of the mind that I am my own "big bad". As in, at a certain point, I am actively preparing other families for a civil war, a schism. Making armies to specifically be taken when the split happens. It can be quite fun, but you still are working with the atrocious battle AI so I mean there's only so much you can do.
Empire 2 for the win.
The unit of 6:33 looks amazing, what mod is it from? Tzardoms?
It really sucks how in medieval 2 you cant actually lose because of the AI not attacking your last settlement as you said, I would like to make an epic last stand but nope.
I dont have that much experience in other total wars but for me empire is the easyest, just rush the fire by lines tech and spam line infantry.
Yep Tsardoms :)
...what mod were you using during the very last segment of M2TW? The UI was beautiful and the campaign map looked amazingly huge
I'm pretty sure that's Tsardoms: Total War
Yep Tsardoms!
I'm curious how the current development in AI (Chat-GPT and so on) will have an influence on the AI in the future of gaming. I suspect that in 10 years or so the AI can be that good that it's hard to defeat even without the AI cheats it gets at the moment.
I think game AI would be made better by imitating different human players rather than being extremely effective and game-y. I don't want to play against an AI equivalent of tournament winning Korean player, I want variety and reasonable challenge.
What are the mods you showcase during the Medieval 2 part?
5:28-5:40
7:07
I think its a mix of Tsardoms, Lucium and Insularis Draco
Anyone have any tips on making a Rome 2 campaign (as Rome and with DEI) more challenging? I have hundreds of hours into the modded game but never played as Rome because it just seemed so boringly easy compared to more minor factions. However, someone recently pointed out to me that Rome is the most fleshed out faction and as such I should give them a try. Should I just play more agressive? Or maybe forego certain mechanics? Of course, I ought to increase the diffiuculty and use battle realism (although I hate the restricted camera)
There are some submods that make things interesting, like limiting armies to 1 per imperium level or making factions (like Carthage for eg) have bigger buffs compared to other minor factions. Don’t remember all the good ones off the top of my head but look through DEI submods there are some good ones 👍
I played rome with dei and tbh even with normal difficulty its still pretty hard.
Roman Legions in TW Rome 2 are insane troops. Nearly no other sword unit gets so good attacking AND defending scores than the roman infantry. Other infantry units often have good defense stats but not so good offensive stats. Whereas the hellenisitc factions can beat every enemy with their pike phalanx if well managed in a battle. But yeah fight against a full stack preatorian guard army is nuts.
But this is nothing compared to the roman elite units in DEI because with weaponary, veterancy and a sol invictus temple you can get way over 100 attack points per unit as far as I can remember.
What do you guys think about adding console commands to the game. Something where you can force the AI to recruit better units and ignore upkeep. Playing shogun 2 Fall of the samurai atm and i realized that after the first phase of solidifying the borders, the game gets supper easy since the AI doesn’t utilize high tier units or natural recourses.
Britannia are really good for beginners to play as they are not so complex
It's been a while since I last played ETW but I remember the British invading middle east when I was playing Ottomans so I think you might be wrong saying the ai doesn't know how to naval invade.
Literally every total war game is easy
In Empire The Marathas break every campaign and around turn 55 the game freezes midturn and breaks if they get too large
Throne of britania so easy but i liked the system ❤❤also witht he mod of the last kingdom
On the other hand, Attila is like: "Son you know, once you start there is no going back"
Oh God Attila is like all of the disaster memes you can think of jumbled up into a massive boulder hurtling down towards you Indiana Jones style. I remember when I first got it I finished a WRE campaign and said NEVER AGAIN.
One thing that I've found to be OP and unfair is Medieval 2 heretics. They come out of nowhere and are too high level to denounce or kill.
They don't really come out of nowhere. Just build churches and priests and you will always have one at high enough level.
Shogun 2 once you learn to use the Yari wall lol. Makes recruiting any samurai a waste of money or just for eye candy.
I like Total War to an extent. They do something no other game does. However while addictive because of the forementioned, I'm not having fun with it.
(Attila) I just want to focus on tactics but here I am sitting wondering what buildings to build and what items to give to a character all the time to keep public order, squalor, food and money in check, as well as getting the right troops.
They made it overly tedious and you really lose the overview of what's going on really fast.
It's like they're trying to compensate what the game lacks with things it really doesn't need.
I played Shogun 2 vanilla campaign, and for me was easier than ETW Darth mod Spanish campaign. At least the first 20 turns of Spain, after you conquer Portugal everything goes downhill.
What mod is he showing for medieval total war?
You play with mods. What mods?
Top 5 hardest total war campaigns
Britain empire total war or really any since ai rarely launches amphibious assaults so you can just focus on massive economy and elite troops.
I think shogun 2 is pretty easy, even when you hit realm divide.. recently finished a oda campaign by making vassals on 1 half of my borders while steam rolling the other half and everyone remained reasonably loyal for the most part
"shogun 2 is easy" -average Oda main
@@captainnyet9855 Kek. Oda is: "hey, do you want your basic units to beat every other clans basic units?"
For empire, what were the mods shown?
Imperial Splendour & ETW2
@@TheTerminatorGaming Thank you!
Go play rise of the republic map rome 2, with rome or Senones, almost not possible to win especial with Senones,
Senones i can say is most challenging campaign ever also a very very fun, every turn you got 2-3 attack and have to Master diplomacy on High level to survive.
For Grand campaign rome 2 Epirus is also very challenging.
"Rome 2 Ai are passive but it can be fixed by some mods"
What mods ? I've been tryingto find one
@Hypocritical Dolphin i have it but i think i need to get more experince in vanilla before jumping right to dei
Yeah this might be the case if this was put out before Three Kingdoms total war but now Three Kingdoms total war is the most easiest total war game just look how OP Cao Cao faction is you can pretty much win the game within 20 to 30 turns easy and the OP Heroes in each faction makes the game even more easy to play.
That's why I play with mods on hard difficulty and history mode
All Total War games are very easy. That is why you have to use mods. I use Bran's mods for a very challenging campaigns.
I expected Shogun 2 on this list since its battle balance is one of the simplest ever made, but you do have a point with the picks you made.
I did not see Rise of the Samurai. I know it's technically a DLC but if Fall is considered it's own game I think Rise should be considered so too. And Rise is truly the stupidest thing I have ever seen bc there is objectively a best unit. I've never seen a total war where there is literally a single best unit that can beat all of them but Rise made it happen and it's honestly the best thing ever.
Yea. I know you are talking about the foot samurai but in reality the strongest "unit" is the Junsatshushi agent. A metsuke that also spreads your allegiance with the added bonus of straight up just taking over towns (doing it with metsuke was incredibly expensive).
Just letting you know Terminator, you accidentally left Rome 1 with the number 3. at the top lol
Oh lol my bad ❤️❤️
For me Atilla is the easiest Ai is so passive
i wish i knew what that was like lol. for me, the ai in Atilla is very agressive. almost annoyingly aggressive.
So more its old, more its easy
...
I think he play every total war on easy difficult so every TW game is easy on easy diff.
How is Empire easier than Medieval 2? Medieval 2 is easier when you understand how to exploit the mechanics, but if you just get a rando gamer off the street and give them Empire and Medieval 2, they'd likely finish an Empire campaign faster than Medieval 2. There are far fewer settlements, public order is easier to deal with, siege battles are easier and battles in general.
Medieval 2 is easy, but I would say it's harder than Empire because
- Religion is a big deal. If you capture a city with too much opposing religion you have bigger public order problems, much worse than in Empire
- The way money works means you can get a negative treasury and just bury yourself in debt. No other game since has let you do that. It's worse than Bankruptcy because for Bankruptcy to be remedied you just need a turn with positive income, whereas in Medieval 2 you often need many turns of looting and positive income to get rid of the negative balance.
- The mechanics are more complicated. To replenish troops you need to retrain them, and that requires moving them to a settlement which can recruit them in the first place, in Empire you can just park them in a settlement and hit retrain. Moreover characters matter, if a good chivlaristic character is in charge they can keep a city from revolting or make the city make far more money.
- If you're going up against the Mongols/Timurids it can be very hard for beginners to deal with them. If you have experience it isn't a big deal but most people won't know what to do.
shogun 2. Uesugi legendary darth mod is the easiest.
To sum it up: Total War AI doesn’t know how to play
How TOB isn't #1 escapes me. By far the easiest game to beat of any TW. Also should be #1 for the worst TW game.
rome 2 beats all other total war games
first?
Easies TW to the point of being unplayably broken - All TWs since WH... the focus on passive replenishment totally destroyed entire strategic portion of the gameplay. It does not matter what/how much casualties you take/give as it takes just one/two turns to replenish entire army immediately for free without any backfire...
Steamrolling Braindead overcasualized BS...
Praise all four Chaos Gods that we have modders that actually make it playable...
Sorry, but Warhammer 3 belongs at the top of the list and far away from any other entries. They completely lobotomized the AI so it's at best trying to be a minor nuisance and is too chicken to try anything but attack undefended settlements and the player holds a ton of lopsided advantages over the AI (like being able to use the extremely overpowered magic system) that campaigns become farcical lickety-split. Warhammer 2 was likewise tilted in favor of the player but at least the AI would occasionally remember it was supposed to fight you.
With all the damn AI new shit that´s going on today, we should have much better games.. Lets see..
