  • Welcome horror fans! This episode is a video essay about Martin (1977) written and directed by filmmaker and master of horror George A Romero. Martin is Romero’s take on the vampire genre, in which the decaying values and beliefs of modern culture are all brought into question. Who is the victim and who is the monster? Romero asks this question and many more in his social commentary about a confused and honest young man who just happens to drink blood.
Martin (1977) is amongst Romero’s personal favourites of all of his own movies and the independent spirit in which the film is made is plain to see.
Martin (1977) in true Romero style turns the vampire genre on its head and gives us, what is for money, one of the best Vampire flicks around.
So, sit back, relax and I hope you enjoy this episode which looks at the production and themes behind the George A. Romero Classic, Martin (1977).

Great review once again John. Romero is definitely one of the true greats of cinema and probably didn't get the recognition he deserved in his lifetime. I love the attention you give to his other work such as The Crazies and Day of The Dead.
As regards Martin, I think it is such a low fi film and the way its shot leaves it wholly ambiguous if he is or isn't (not gonna spoil anything for those who haven't seen the film). I think Romero said in an interview that he believed him to be.

Cool movie. The part that freaked me out was the staking scene it was so....disturbing yet it had to happen to stop his descent into madness. Love your synopsis.❤

That scene is so scary, one of the things that makes him so terrifying is that he is so calculated and smart. I didn't have time to mention in the film, (I wanted to keep it under 20 mins so people wouldn't get bored lol) Is that he seems to choose people, sometimes unintentionally like the couple who are having an affair, who seem to have something a little off about them. The woman on the train dismisses the the ticket collectors conversation seeming to be uncool. He then kills the alcoholics at the end , almost like he's choosing people he finds undesirable. Maybe just me lol but something I might look at in another video. Great movie.

Cheers man, that means a lot. Its a special movie Martin I think. A lot of Romero's stuff is great but Martin, Dawn, Creepshow, Knightriders and Day of the Dead has to be one of the greatest runs in a filmmakers career. Such a talented group of people who made those movies.
