- Chevrolet produced a lot of legendary muscle cars back in the day. One of its most famous muscle car models was the Chevelle SS. The best muscle car that Chevrolet produced was its first Chevelle SS equipped with a big-block V8 - the 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396. Watch the video to find out why it was the best.

You're truly one of the best car history channels on CZcams brother keep up the great work love what you doing
I agree. Keep up the good work @ oldcarmemories
What I always remember about the car was Dan Blocker from the TV show Bonanza owned a yellow one. Of course Chevrolet was the major sponsor of the show back then.
Those Chevrolet commercials made a huge impression on me even to this day.
1965 Malibu SS with 396 turbo 400 and Corvette stall mate.
Loved Dan, little Joe and Hop Sing
Ahhh... the 60's. Great cars of that time.
My first car ride, on the way home from the hospital, was in a 65 Chevelle.
One of the best channels on YT
PLEASE do a Video about the 1964 Chrysler 300 Letter cars
I had two 65 chevelle SS but one was a 283 automatic and the other was a ragtop with a 327 4spd, both red on red bucket seats console cars, I loved them both, the hardtop cost me $500.00!!!
I had a '65 with a 283 and a powerglide. Buckets, white exterior and black interior. Wish I still had it. Sold it years ago, but I do know what happened to it.
I had one with the 327 and 4 speed. Blew motor and then put 396 in it. Didn’t know what I had.
THE ICON of all muscle cars EVER. Wish I had the 300K-400K to afford one. No yellow ones thanks.
Whenever I see old American cars like this I am quickly reminded of how bland and boring modern cars look. I don't care if they are more reliable or environmental. These classic autos are a beautiful work of art and really demand respect.
Indeed my friend. They are from a time when hard working Americans demanded quality American made automobiles. They have so much character.
@Man With 9000 IQ Yeah I liked the new 2 door one.
@Man With 9000 IQ A true Bronco should be 2 door imo, but yes the 4 door model looks great as well. Some people have kids and want to drive a cool SUV. I can definitely respect them for getting a cool one instead of the countless rent a car looking ones that the market is saturated with.
Yep and they all look the same. You cant tell a Mercedes from a Hyundai.
@Bluebell Engine Prductions No but he isn't wrong tho. Modern cars from all nations just don't have class like the cars from the 40s and early 2000s
Never realized the 65 was built so well... Great job!!
I love your videos I’m 14 and my grandma has a 1964 Impala
What a car! Great history lesson and walk/drive down memory lane 👍
This car is one of my favorite muscle cars of all time. Classic styling and a big block Chevy. I'd love to own one of these. Maybe some day?
My older brother was 10 years older than me and he had a 1966 Chevelle with the 396 It was maroon with a white convertible top. He died last week.
I bought a 1965 Malibu SS 350 hp 327. Nothing ever beat me in a short drag or high speed. But this SS 396 would have produced a lot more torque. What I liked about the 327 with its short stroke was its ability to wind up like an electric motor. I believe it probably was capable of winding higher than a 350 cu in because of that. Of course the 350 would again have had more torque.
I would rather have the L-79 350 HP 327 than the 396. You had a great car and I love the sound, especially at idle.....
The 350 hp 327 was my choice too. The extra weight of the big block up front really took a toll on handling and braking. Sure, a buddy made his 396 Chevelle into an 11 second car, but it wasn’t good for anything else. That high revving 327 had a considerably higher top speed too. Just the thing for outrunning the cops on Saturday night.
Years ago at a world of wheels here in Atlanta the Dan Blocker Z16 car was on display. Yellow with a black vinyl top. I went nuts, the owner "you want to sit in the car" . I don't think I made engine noises when I grabbed the shifter. These cars had the beefier convertible frames.
I also saw it in person at The Peach State Chevelle Club car show in Oakwood, GA. Took a bunch of pictures. I think this car was restored in Georgia. Had a hard time visualizing Dan Blocker in this car, because he was such a huge guy & probably had to squeeze himself in car to drive it!
@@brucedeerhaven The owner certainly made my day, good guy.
@@stevethomas760 I also met a guy at another car show in Covington, GA maybe 25 years ago that brought 3 of his Z16s (yes 3!), & he said he had 2 others - a total of 5!!! I wish I could remember his name. Now, that made my day & a sight to behold!!
@@brucedeerhaven Bet it was the same guy. When I met him he told me "I know where there's a black one that I'm thinking about buying". I'm thinking what in the world does this guy do for a living? Owned a food distribution company. Saw a couple Z16s at the Mecum auction in Kissimmee a couple years ago. Incredible cars
Cool story about an amazing car! Great automotive history!
A really scarce big block option, these cars are worth big money these days
I had one of those 65 SS Chevelles. I had it in my shop and I moved to Texas. Came back to get my cars and they were all gone. My brother sold them. He said he didn't think I wanted them since I moved away and left them. Also had a 68 SS Camaro, A 66 El Camino, A 70 split bumper SS Camaro, a 58 Edsel, a 51 Jeep truck, a 51 Chevrolet pickup and a 71 3/4 ton Ford pickup. Live and learn I suppose.......
So your in prison for Murder now ?
@@timothyantoine5321 I should be I suppose... But living on the outside is worth more than living with knowing you took matters in your own hands!!!
@@dannywilsher4165 Yeah true , and it was your brother ! That had to of been infuriorating .
@@timothyantoine5321 Yes sir, it was over 20 years ago and I haven't seen him but once since then and it was at my aunt's funeral.
My next door neighbor owned one of these cars. It was a 1965 1/2 model and he said that only 600 were made for NASCAR racing requirements. It had the 396 375hp motor, four speed transmission, and the rear was 4.11 gears with a positrac rear diff. 0 to 60 was supposed to be in 5.4 seconds accord to reviews on the car. It was fully equipped with bucket seats, ac, power front disc brakes, and power steering. It was red with a black vinyl top. One of the fastest cars that I have ever been in. The funniest part was that he and his wife were in there late 50’s. She would drive it and race the teenagers at the lights AND BEAT THEM ALL THE TIME!!! As a teenager of 15 at the time that was and still is my favorite dream car.
From 1965-2020 we gained about 4 seconds quarter mile run.
Sure we did. But just imagine if these old musclecars had the benefit of modern fuel injection, big tires and traction control
@@justsumguy2u Good POint!
Yeah, but they cost about 6 to 10 times as much now, too. I'd be perfectly happy with the old, slower, cheaper performance car.
I loved the Chevelle! Two of my friends had one. Both were 327s. One white one blue. I drove both and loved them, both Malibus!
Thanks for the great video. I was a GM man all through my years up to about 30. Then I realized that each basket of apples tasted good no matter who made them. I had Dodges and fords and Austins and even had a Daytona 500 roadrunner. Orange that would be worth about $250,000 in Springfield Oregon that I bought for $895 while I was working for WW Well drilling and beat the third-best arm wrestler in the states after a night of party and up most of the night. Those were the days.
Such an awesome car my uncle had one when I was a kid
I always like catching your videos when they come out because I can remember when these cars were brand new and picking up brochures at either the dealer itself or the auto show. Considering how powerful the muscle cars were, it seems they all had the same tire size of 7.75-14 so they were skinny for midsize cars but they started getting bigger by the end of the sixties but then again a few still ran on F70-14’s, or F60-15’s, just look at the stats on the cars and you’ll see what size they rode on
Some of those stock tires were hopeless for the torque at the rear axles. But then, I don't know how many guys opted for premium motors like the L78 and just left the stock wheels and tires alone. I know I wouldn't have. 😁
Love all your videos. Professional and accurate as far as I know. Keep up the good work and give us more.
When I was a kid in the late 70s I knew a kid who had a '66 Chevelle. It was all beat up and run through the mill with aftermarket over sized wheels on the rear, but he really though he had something. One day he went to the car wash and when the car came out, he *stomped* it while exiting the driveway and lost control, wrapping the car around a telephone poll. He was not hurt, except for his pride, and the car was no more.
AGAIN, A VERY NICE JOB. INTERIOR SHOTS IN PARTICULAR. THANK YOU, EDDIE B.
I'm a huge GTO fan but in '65 I'd have bought the Chevelle SS.
1966-1967 Was the most beautiful body style of the Chevelle, with the 71 and 72 being a close second in my opinion.
You beat me to it. The 66 and 67 versions of the Chevelle/442/GTO were real eye catchers.
@@75aces97 agreed, I consider the 1970 model chevelle a bit overrated, considering it’s similar styling to the nova of the same year but good nonetheless
@@Nebulasecura My parents' first car when I was born was a 1968 LeMans, so I have some soft spot for that generation of A bodies, but I prefer the lines on the previous generation. I'm partial to the 1967 442, but the other models are sharp too.
Vetkim2000
Truly enjoy all your videos.
I'm in the process of restoring from ground up my 1965 "138" vin Chevelle Malibu SS.
Old school 1966-67 396 with built turbo 400 Holley carb.
Gorgeous black with black/white interior.
Dropped 2" which makes it handle incredible.
It's my baby even sitting next to Corvette stall mate.
Keep the memories coming for this 70 yr old chevy fan!!!
That's the car that should have been in "Repo Man." Repo Man's always intense.
Nice video!
Keep doin' what you're doing! Love these vids.
Owned a 327 300 hp 65 Malibu SS, Posi Trac 4 Speed. Was the sweetest car I owned!
This is going to be fun! Good luck y’all! Kentucky, 1965 Pontiac GTO
65 Malibu SS my favorite Chevelle. Back in1980 when I was working in Oklahoma I ran across a yellow one in a junkyard hit in the front I checked it out to see if it had the steering wheel but it was bent up no seat belt on Had trunk lid and tail lights sad to see a SS that rare in a yard it was the only one I have ever seen except in pictures.
I still to this day do not understand what engineers were thinking in the 60's.
*Johnson, let's drop a 400 hp bigblock into a family sedan with 6 inch wide rear tires!*
*That is brilliant Mr. Smith!*
My 1971 SS 454, 4-speed El Camino with some weight bolted in the rear was a pretty awesome car, it was my high school ride!
Love it. This paved the way for the legendary 1970 Chevelle SS. I believe there is another video for that.
Wasn't 1965 the first year for the 396? My uncle had one in his Impala wagon. I believe that 1964 was the last year for the iconic 409.
@Jeremy Thompson Thanks. I didn't know that. That would be cool to see a '65 with a 409 in it. Most of the ones that I remember seeing, had either a 283 or a 327. There were a lot of straight sixes as well.
Wow! Tough crowd! I'm not big into Chevy's, I'm into Pontiacs first and Olds second! But I can appreciate what this car is! It's what Pontiac and Olds should have done to the GTO and Olds 442 from the start! Big brakes, and 12 bolt rear end with heavy duty (convertible ) frame! The only flaw is not offering a posi trac in it! Awesome car in my opinion!
Stunning
1965 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 is pure beauty on the road. Very nice car!!
6 figures !!! Couldn't even imagine!
The infamous Z-16
A classic of rides! Well played!
These cars were so cool back in the day, Paul Revere and the Raiders recorded a song about them. It was called "SS396"
Cool song for a cool car.
Great here. I love this stuff.
I grew up with a '64 Malibu wagon. Folks bought it used, '66,,,283 went south.
PowerPak 327 got dropped. Reliable. Trips to Oregon and such. crowding 200k on the clock when it went. Worst was it hated unleaded gas. Had to crank back the timing.
Family buys a '65 Chevelle Malibu 2 door, bought used in like '68. Car was beautiful but sold after a year. Gas mileage was the story (VW Bug and Falcons).
excellent talk
I'm partial to the 67 Chevelle SS. My parents passed it to me on my 16th birthday in 78. I managed to take it to 135,000 miles before the motor gave out in 84 and being a broke 20-something rather than letting it rust away I sold it to a guy who gave me $1500 for it in 85.
Thanks for the videos sir. Sp5may, lima 35tango out.✌🇺🇸🍻
Always reminds me of John Travolta in Pulp Fiction
Would love to be the guy that owns the ONE 2dr convertible model manufactured. 🤑😎
Yep, $$$
Very cool
Back in the day a 350HP 327 chevelle would blow the doors of the Z16. I had one. And even better was the little Nove SS 350HP 327 4 speed. I had one of these also.
What's your name Robert STONED ?
Sweet
My Father order brand new a 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS. L79 327. But it being the mid 60's he had it bored .120 over. 12 to 1 pistons. Racer Brown Cam,Dual Holley 4150 carbs,Hooker headers,M22 rock crusher with Hurst Vertigate shifter,12 bolt with 5:13 gears on Chrome Reverse rims. He use to out run his buddies Hemi Road Runner on the street.
While l don't know if it's a perfect muscle car but the 1964-65 Malibu is a very nice size not to small not to big it's my favorite body style for a Malibu other years are nice to but they got bigger and heavier over time it may seem out in left field but the size of the 1964-65 Malibu seems to be very similar in size and weight to 1978-1988 GM G-body which is probably my favorite GM platform last of the Fisher bodies full frame simple and yes grossly underpowered unless it's a Buick GN or GNX but that's nothing that can't be fixed finding a engine transplant with decent power
Would love to have one.
Love the videos I own a 77 firebird formula and would love to see fords IMO worst business decision which was the mercury cyclone/montego barely any sold compared to Torino montegos and cyclones are rarely ever seen keep up the work
If someone took one of every new car offered today,in silver paint with black interior and removed all the identifying badges, stickers and cast ID emblems on the engines, etc. and parked 'em all in a football stadium how many of us could tell one from the next?I'll bet even auto sales people wouldn't consistently recognize even the cars they sell.
I'll take the '65 over the others all day long. It has its own unique look. By the way the work you do is awesome!
My '65' malibu 327 /300 hp.on the second day received a corvette 365hp cam shaft ( $32) and 16 solid lifters for ( $1 ) a piece from Nickey Chevrolet. For a whopping $48. I then switched to a 4:11 positraction rear end . 14 .00 et average with101 mph.average. Four speed shifter. 7'' slicks at the track. Drove it to work every day.Until Nam came knockin.RVN66/67 Forgot , laker pipes . As I could not afford headers.
I was born in the wrong era. Cars from the late 50's to early 70's are the best and I missed out. Now they're so expensive I'll never have a chance to get a good one
I owned a '66 base 327 4-speed rustbucket when I was 16. lol
Can you imagine that one and only convertible
Central California watching
That in Black 😍😍😍😍
Chevelle. Great band.
The 1965 396 Chevelle got the rear sway bar from the Olds 442.
I hate to burst your bubble but I had a co=worker who ordered the SS396 Chevelle with the 425 horse 396 and 4.11 positrac rear end.
It took 2 months to arrive
We added wider tires.
My fav.
Love the 65s
A Malibu with the 350Hp 327(L79) properly optioned was actually a better balanced package in that the engined weighed quite a bit less than the big block. The L79 was a screamer!!
a classic car.
These were fast little machines , hardly seen them on the streets even in 65 , many SS Impalas with 325 hp and even vettes with 425 hp . Anyone know what the production numbers were on the Z-16 ?
How about a video on the full-size 65 Chevrolet it was a million car seller . And was an alternative look to what was originally planned due to metal stamping issues.
Still had the TRI5 steering wheel parts bin
After all that effort to make it fantastic, Positraction wasn't even available at extra cost? Dang!
How many unsuspecting 1965 tri power GTOs were left in the dust that year by the uncommon and mysterious Z16??
It seems you forgot the use of the frame from the convertible to help it be more rigid to harness the 396 torque.
It was essentially besides the engine and frame upgrade an Impala police car.
I have a 1965 chevelle ss 4speed 283 138 vin all original numbers matching
And I thought that the year following that was the first year for the 396 big-block V8.
As Spinal Tap would say HEAVY DUTY
every month, there was a car with the title "best"
was the original ss package a style or performance deal ???? 🤔✌👍
Y not do a g body 1978 88 review?
69 my favorite year
i like the 65 chevelle but i do not think it was better then the 66 or 67.i prefer the 66 and 67 rear wheel openings. were u can actaully put a wide tire on it without having to mini tub it.
Those skinny tires just do not look right on these cars.
Bias Ply, engine technology was waaaaay ahead of tires back then.
Polyglass burners
Period correct, but I think everyone upgraded as soon as something better came along.
thats the way they built them
When I was a salesman we got a 69 Chevelle in with a 396 automatic and it had tires like that. I drove it one day stopped at a stop light when the light turned green I floored it and it didn't move just smoked the tires.
Well I'll be damned I'll just be damned
Z-16?
Why is the breather photoshopped at 8:26....and more?
😁✌🖖👌👍😎
Do a video on that the case 70 series is better then you thinck it is
Nice! Only issues are the robot voice and always stating opinions like they're facts. I dont like saying "best" all the time.
Headers, tires and gears and they ran mid 12's.
The '65 SS 396 wasn't even close to being Chevy's best musclecar. The '70 LS6 454 Chevelle and 427 Corvettes would leave it in the dust, as would an L78 version of the SS 396 Nova.
I'm a big fan of Novas. Had two buddys that owned '70 396/375 & two other buds that had '66 with a L79. The 70 might have been faster but I'm partial to the '66. Had a 63 Nova 6 cylinder 3sp & a 64 SS that someone had dropped a 327/300HP engine in. Fun times
@@stevethomas760 I loved and still do anything with the 327/350HP L-79 engine.
The 65 demands respect! For me the best ones are the 69, the 70 and the 71. Tree different Chevelles all cool in their own way.
PS: I do know that the 70 and the 71 are very similar
Come on man... You can say the first true muscle car in Chevy's line up, but the best in the muscle car era that Chevy ever had? The 1970 Chevelle LS6 was the absolute BIG DOG period.
Not as good of a performer the 66 was much better looking. Drove a 325 hp 4 spd in 11th grade.
