    BAKU - For centuries, France was a global powerhouse, permeating its will over five continents. Since those imperial days, it has lost considerable ground in its former domains. Only in Africa did France retain its hold, owing to the monetary system that was put in place. In the decade after World War II, President François Mitterand was quoted saying: “Without Africa, France will have no history in the 21st century.” Like a foretelling coming true, it is precisely because of Africa that modern-day France is returning as the global force it once was. And it’s using the soft power attributes of language to cement its hegemony

Last I checked Eastern Europeans still outnumbered people from the Middle East in Germany. France as far as I know has always had a very large North African population. Might i remind you it was originally predicted that America would no longer have a white majority by 2030. Now they're saying that it might still have a white majority beyond 2050. The main reason is that after about 2 generations immigrant birth rates are no longer higher than the local population.

      I remembered when I was little someone with a strong southern accent (Marseille) spoke to me and I understood nothing. Like nothing at all.
      Same for Canadian
      The difficulty is that they use slang for words in combination with strong accent
      So a car in french is like voiture but in Quebec it’s like “char” (for a french it would be a tank or an old school carriage with horses)
      So we do not pretend it’s just hard to when you don’t have at all the same references and a lot of cultural contact.
      I guess Canadian are a lot more closer to USA than France. So it evolves differently than France who now have a lot of African slang in its language (mostly Arabic and from old colonies).

      You can't fix starvation in Africa in a year, five years, and not even in ten or twenty. There is too much conflict, etc.
      Founding schools with the aim to make them all learn French may sound selfish, but at least they get to visit a school. Some don't have that luxury.
      And a country must act in self-interest. If you are a private person, you may do some good and provide a family with financial help so they can have it easier. But as a country, you priority is your own people, everything else is a matter of how much you benefit from it. Countires that act like a welfare institution won't last long - the global political, economical, etc. world is damn ruthless. If you slip, you slip forever.

      Might just happen, most people I talk to about this is positive and think a Northern European Union could be preferable to a European Union in many ways. Right-wingers think it's a way to control immigration better, left-wingers that it will preserve the Scandinavian egalitarian culture better.
      That being said, close to no-one is pushing for this in Scandinavia right now.
      I say it's up to the EU. If the EU turns towards a corrupt, dysfunctional union, I don't think the patience of people in the Nordic would stand. The standards and expectations are higher in the North.

      @@cossackhistorian7425 Personally I would love to see Estonia be a closer part of the Nordic co-operation, and become an equal partner in the Nordic Council, and so if there ever were to be a Nordic Union I would like to see Estonia as a part of it.
      Estonia's history is closely tied with the other Nordic countries, particularly Finland and Sweden. But, because of the Soviet Union a lot of people today have forgotten and are not aware of how close these cultures have been in the past. Estonia writes with the Latin alphabet, it has a protestant past/tradition, has a Finnic language, it's always been a part of Northern Europe more than Eastern Europe. Same goes with Karelia and Ingria, but that one is more complicated obviously.
      In Northern Europe we should stand together as brothers and sisters, the Balto-Finnic people and the Scandinavian people together combines and make up the Nordic, due to a long shared history, along with the Sami people and the Islanders descended from Scandinavians(the Faroes, Iceland, and in some people's opinion Shetland and Orkney too).
      Exactly what is the Nordic and what is not, is heavily debated, but in my opinion it does not make sense to think of Finland as Nordic without also thinking of Estonia as Nordic.

      Daniel 2:44 ¶ And in the days of those kings THE GOD OF HEAVEN WILL SET UP A KINGDOM THAT SHALL NEVER BE DESTROYED, NOR SHALL THIS KINGDOM BE LEFT TO ANOTHER PEOPLE. It shall crush all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, AND IT SHALL STAND FOR EVER;

      English is obviously the best language. English is the first global lingua franca. English is the language of the future. English is the only language in the world that is an official language in countries on all six permanently inhabited continents. The English language has the most books, the most films, the most songs, the most science publications, the most web-sites, arguably the most speakers (ahead of even Mandarin if people who know only a few words of English are counted), it is the official language of both the sea (i.e. Seaspeak) and the sky (i.e. Airspeak) and it will someday become humanity's universal language of space (de jure or otherwise). English was also the first language spoken by humans on another world besides Earth (i.e. the Moon). Arabic, French, Russian, Spanish and Mandarin cannot compete with the linguistic leadership of English.

    I don't know what stands for "superpower" so I'm not gonna respond to your title.
    There is an argument to be made about France becoming the predominant power in Europe and one of the main players in the world. The reason is quite simple : the US "isolationnist"' (for lack of a better term) trend that probably will continue.
    I'm using Peter Zeihan's arguments here which basically goes like this : with the US influence rescinding, the US navy will stop ensuring safe passage for trade and stop granting such easy access to its big consumer market. That means that the countries that will get the most out of this "new world order" are the countries that can easily trade with themselves, have a young demographics that can consume enough to absord the national production, and have a navy capable to secure exports and imports (especially energy and other essentials) in order to replace for themselves what used to be the role of the US navy.
    It just so happened that France checks all the marks here, and there are not so many countries that do.
    To the Zeihan's argument I would add that France still has the "geopolitical will" that people take for delusion of grandeur, and that will, as deluded it might be, is still a necessary psychological condition for an ambitious strategy.
    I would also add that France is a 15 centuries old nation and it is really not the first time that some people say that France's day are over, but France always come back and always near to the top if not on top, so if history is of any help here I would argue it may well be repeating itself.
    In conclusion I simply believe that France is a good candidate to become the predominant power in western Europe and thus one of the major player in the world.
    Does that make it a "superpower" ? I don't think so because there will still be great regions of the world where France's reach will not make it a major player there : the Americas and south east asia.
    But France will probably be the predominant power in western Europe and still be a major player in Africa. As for the Middle-East I don't know. So far outside of Lebanon France's influence is limited, but since the US seem to withdraw from that region, who knows how the cards will be reshuffled here.
    All that said, I really don't know to which degree the "francophone strategy" will help here.

    • @buddermonger2000
      @buddermonger2000 Před 2 lety

      Well part of being a superpower is if you can leverage global power projection and if France can compete with the US navy in any capacity in the future then it will be a superpower. I see the US being basically being the China of the west: periods of integration with the global economy and periods of isolation. When the US integrates it is dominant during that period, much like China. China will not be a conquered power again any time in the foreseeable future and the US will similarly fit that capacity. Both have regional holds and I'm curious to see if the US will invest more in Latin America.
      In this context like you said I think France has the chance to really bloom in this sphere. The US is happy to let a friendly power rise and as long as the French properly integrate in Africa economically and militarily (I imagine a large expansion of the French foreign legion if they can create political allegiance which can be carried as long as the French military is the guard of these countries) then France can easily become the guardian of the eastern Mediterranean and half of Africa. I see the west Mediterranean being taken by Turkey and what's left being taken by Iran. Both are stable powers in an unstable area which have a way to unite the region and industrialize to power their dominance. So it'll be interesting to see how that develops.

Maybe the Germans and Belgians because Belgium has no unity, and Germans are terrified of their own history. But never proud, old countries like Uk, Ireland,France or Poland for example.

      @@adamtoner3870 you people know that a united Europe would not actually be a single nation where everyone goes from French english and German to the abstract idea of European over day ?
      If Europe becomes a country it's would most likely be a try of government with representatives of every nation making the heads of state a single economy and a single armed forces.
      The objective would mainly be to sort out the Euro to better adapt it the weaker nation same to make an armed forces that's has a semblance of uniformity.
