The Grateful Dead was my dad's favourite band, and Garcia was his idol. He used to play this song on repeat ALL THE TIME. He passed away 16 years ago, and this song was never played again in our home. Just recently, I rediscovered this song, and to hear it again is like bringing dad's heart and soul back into my life.
"I wrote 'Terrapin Part One' at a single sitting in an unfurnished house with a picture window overlooking San Francisco Bay during a flamboyant lightning storm. I typed the first thing that came into my mind at the top of the page, the title: Terrapin Station. Not knowing what it was to be about, I began my writing with an invocation to the muse and kept typing as the story began to unfold. On the same day, driving into the city, Garcia was struck by a singular inspiration. He turned his car around and hurried home to set down some music that popped into his head, demanding immediate attention.” - Robert Hunter
Yup and Jerry said in an interview that the words Hunter had written fit perfectly into the music he had written. They fell right into place without editing of any sort. See normally Jerry would take a stack of Hunter's lyrics and go off and write music to them, but in the case of Terrapin, he had the music beforehand as you mentioned. Jerry said it was one of two times that ever happened. The other time being Wharf Rat.
I was able to see G.D. with Jerry 15 times(including the last 8 shows and most of those in the 95 summer tour, I missed only knickerbocker and night 2 in Deer Creek, because I guess an acoustic Desolation Row is the time the mob decided to ruin things. I am truly grateful to have met some incredible older (not old) heads who were more than happy to pass on some nuggets, no not those kind of nuggets, but experiences, stories and some crispy crispy tapes. It opened our eyes even wider than they already were, like sponges we soaked it all in... Sad that so many couldn't understand just how special the gift we were given.. Sorry I get long winded. I was INCREDIBLY fortunate to sit in the 6th row, right in front of Phil, at 3RiversPitt. It changed everything that night as I went to music school. Never before had I seen what it looks like when a band that has played for decades, interacts on stage. Jerry didn't look well, he looked very pale and barely lifted his chin off his chest. Of course we had no idea that Jerry was dying. But you know what they came out for the second set and began to noodle, when the sky opened up, I mean it absolutely down paired. But considering the heat, and being in the 6th row, I was going nowhere and neither were 50,000 others. They jumped right into the rain songs: Rain/Box/Samba, just as they had played the week before at RFK, but you could feel a different energy and sure enough Bobby stepped forward and you hear the first chords of Looks Looks Like, my favorite Bobby ballad and he didn't disappoint. Simple math(lol) was telling us Jerry was up and it was as going to be special.. As soon as Bobby stepped back, the lights went dark then green as Jerry stepped forward and you hear those incredible first few notes of Terrapin, 50,000 and not one would be any other place in the world. I've always been a little more lyrical than music, but u can't have one without the other.. The story teller makes no choice, soon you will not here his voice, his job was to shed light and not to master. That was Jerry to me the greatest storyteller I have ever heard, he changed my life. Very grateful to have been there and starting to get it.. Thanks for reading I know it was long, but that's how much it meant to me...
Floridapirate1 I was always a jerry girl, he is a fine man and i miss him dearly. My husband has often been mistaken for Jerry, lol, but right here right now, my man plays Jerry for me to me, and to anyone human, animal, trees, rock, sand and soil. I am lady with the fan. All day every day- for this I am grateful to be alive every day. Miss the days on the road with the band, ahhhh, beautiful memories✌💚
There are certain experiences in one's life that are so moving and so haunting that one is forever changed. Watching Jerry perform Terrapin Station live in Las Vegas during an electric storm is surely a moment that I will never forget. Arguably the greatest song ever written. If you are not moved by this then you are listening, but are not hearing! Thanks for posting. R.I.P. Jerryman can't believe it's been 16 years already.
I now understand the brilliance of the dead. I am 53 years old and have just recently gotten into GD. I know what your thinking ...on what planet have I been living . the fact remains that I am continually playing GD all of the time . I cannot stop;
I'm 24 and I love these guys to death, I miss him too. It doesn't matter how old you are, how recently you've been listening, or where you're from. What's important is that you found them and appreciate the magic they bring to this world. That's what being a Dead Head is all about!
He was just good, this guy... He touches the interior of my heart... Why would anybody ever criticize him? He was an American boy and within my dear heart I so wish he and Willie had gotten together....
Pacero I was at this show. I only lived about twenty minutes away back then. I don't even remember them playing this. Lol took 2 tabs of "Chinese New Years" and Cowboy Neal took the wheel. Just remember it was soooooooo hot during the day when GD came on, me and a buddy left our seats and went into the concession area seeking cold beverages and shade. We came with another guy and we'd go check on him from time to time. Everytime he would just smile, then frown and go, "man, it's hot really hot. Too hot." Then look back at the stage and start smiling again. When Dylan came on it had cooled somewhat. I do remember the craziest version of Rainy Day Women ever!!! 70,000+ screaming at once, "everybody must get stoned". I felt like it was a dream. I came home and my bedroom was still breathing and I wanted to go back, I was certain the band was still playing. Lol. Some rise, some fall......to get to Terrapin.. I'm 50 now. Dead and Company are ok. But these were the days......
Pacers that comment hits close to home. Maybe seek out a video called girl gives coin to street musician. When Garcia awoke from his coma he said "I'm not Beethoven". Not this time anyways.
"More than this I will not ask/Faced with mysteries dark and vast/Statements just seem vain at last . . ." My favorite line from my all-time favorite Dead song. And this is one of the best live performances of it that I've ever come across! :)
Im so thankful for the music being shared im sure had some fun in my life and these boys were the reason i was able to dance and now a dawn of a new sounds beautiful the birds are singing outside the door as if they are singing in the band
This was a great show. Somewhat surreal. Outside in the parking lot felt like you were being processed at an internment camp with all the cops and fenced walkways, so finally entering the stadium was an amazing relief in and of itself. It was like a refuge from the police state. Radically different than Ventura 6 weeks prior but it all came together. For those on these boards who never made it to a dead show and wonder what it was all about I would liken it to a life-altering religious experience. Particularly for a daytime show on a beautiful day. The combination of the music, the sun, the beautiful people, the mind altering substances and the sense of true freedom rocked your soul to its very core. It gave you hope for humanity, and it changed you forever. There will never be anything like it again. It was a privilege of my life to have had the opportunity to live it.
I sat right above Jerry , first row Balcony in the Old Boston GAHDEN this same year when they played Terrapin Station. Crickets and Cicadas sing a rare and different tune. I shivered when those words came out of Jerry’s Mouth. God , I miss that whole scene. God Bless you Jerry. Thank You.
saw them 3 times before Jerry's passing and was in strawberry fields in NY central park when he passed. I feel so blessed to have been a part of something so special. Never have I found what I did at their shows. They are priceless but I hope something comes along similar, this world needs it so much!!
This video is perfect evidence to how great the GD were. Excellent music written by Jerry, excellent lyrics by Hunter. Jerry plays very well here, nearly flawless, and Brent does an exemplary job coloring the background with his vocals and keyboards. Bob's subtle contributions aren't easily noticable, but are a great contribution to the song when one delves deeper into the music.
great comment izzydance13. i was fortunate, i got to see jerry and the boys from 92-95. i am so thankful that i had that opportunity. everytime i see a video tears come to my eyes. i miss the shows so much. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JERRY!!! you live on through the music.
+Max Dolof suit yerself then~~count the time, and know that any band has on/off gigs~~the Dead were known for the unpredictable nature of the "beast"~~
It confuses onlookers that my joy and nostalgia of times bygone manifest in tears, the look of sorrow. I am blessed to have been part of this scene the final two years. It centered my existence. To this moment, should despair creep on me, Mr. Hunter and Mr. Garcia nearly as magically turn my page to brighter days and thoughts.
Crazy that that baby is about 32 years old now. Glad mine and Jerrys life collided where I was able too see about 50 shows until he passed, greatest times of my life.
Lyricist Robert Hunter wrote the "Terrapin Station Part 1" lyrics in a single sitting, during a rare Bay Area lightning storm. On the same day, driving across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, lead guitarist Jerry Garcia was struck by the idea for a singular melodic line. He turned his car around and hurried home to set it down in notation before it escaped him. Hunter said "When we met the next day, I showed him the words and he said, 'I've got the music.' They dovetailed perfectly and Terrapin edged into this dimension."[7] He based the lyrics for the "Lady with a Fan" section on a traditional English folk song known variously as "The Lady of Carlisle", "The Bold Lieutenant" and "The Lion's Den". The ballad is #396 on the Roud Folk Song Index. It is also O 25 on the Laws list, which synopsizes "The lady decides to choose between two brothers who love her by determining which is braver. She tosses her fan into a lion's den and asks them to retrieve it."[8] Hunter, who was also influenced by Sir Walter Scott, had composed "Terrapin Station" in two parts, the second never recorded or performed by the Grateful Dead. Drummer Bill Kreutzmann ironed the arrangement, explaining "We sat down and mapped it out. I said, 'This is how the song goes.' I showed [Mickey] all the parts that I felt worked really well, he added a couple, and that's what the song is today. We went back into the studio the next night and got it right. With the drum parts worked out, everything else snapped together like puzzle pieces."[9] Rhythm guitarist Bob Weir's "Estimated Prophet" was written in septuple time. His lyrics for the song (finished with writing partner John Barlow) examine a character's delusions of grandeur and California's propensity for false prophets. The song also quotes "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel".[10][11] Drummer Bill Kreutzmann said "It's a great song but when [Weir] brought it to us, something was off. It needed a groove. It was in quick 7 4 but it didn't swing. Yet. For my homework that night, I combined two fast sevens and played half-time over it. The two sevens brought the time around to an even number - the phrasing is in two bars of seven, so technically the time signature is in 14 8. But that's getting technical. In layman's terms, 'Estimated Prophet' suddenly grooved."[9]
This was some of the last of Jerry's great shows. Just before the coma. Whats even better is I was there hearing this as it was recorded. I love this song. I really don't think Jerry was the same after the coma. I never saw another show after that. He wasn't the same.
im very forchant to live in those great times i saw a gd a couple of times but dont remember all,one of the most iconic bands of all times so much fun jerry will be in my heart and soul always
This is Jerry at his best he brought everyone together hippies, yuppies and as you may have noticed even bikers by the Hell's Angels sticker on his amp. Great man and musician.
What's Bobby doing wearing my sisters shorts? No seriously folks I'll be here all night, tip the bartenders and thank the waiters. Long live the music of the soul!

lavendermagic84 awesome!
I only hope that one day when I'm old and grey my grandkids hear this and feel what I felt.
right on
you must show them brother, it is your job to shed light...

wow. love that
now that, is how music is meant to be written
Yes Seth. ..what an epic tune

In 400 years when everyone has forgotten Lady Gaga and Brittney Spears people will still be listening to the Grateful Dead.
More than anything
this comment is everything
Yeah they will
I know I will 😉
I miss the fat man... he rocks like no other can or ever will.....
Floridapirate1
I was always a jerry girl, he is a fine man and i miss him dearly.

I now understand the brilliance of the dead. I am 53 years old and have just recently gotten into GD. I know what your thinking ...on what planet have I been living . the fact remains that I am continually playing GD all of the time . I cannot stop;
Same thing happened to John Mayer and it got him in the band. I am still waiting for my call.
Once you have been touched there is no turning back.
welcome
you'll never be the same. 😁
Welcome. I had the privilege of seeing Jerry about sixty times. Just remember, the music never stopped. Enjoy!
I cant get enough of this performance jerry fuckin shines
his job is to shed light, not to master
+Alexander Imperatore the story teller?
I can’t quit this song. No song can transport me to moments like this. Forever Grateful ⚡️❤️
If Bob Weir can wear short shorts like that - so can I!😁
Love this song!
Peter R no, not even Bob can get away with it really.
In 1987, they were the standard.
No they weren't. Everybody was making funs Bobs shorts even then. Shorts were shorter but...
You can wear them , but please don't.
Yeah but why would you want to?
I'm 24 and I love these guys to death, I miss him too. It doesn't matter how old you are, how recently you've been listening, or where you're from. What's important is that you found them and appreciate the magic they bring to this world. That's what being a Dead Head is all about!
Without question one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever created by human beings. The Grateful Dead are the quintessential American band.
Agreed!
He was just good, this guy... He touches the interior of my heart... Why would anybody ever criticize him? He was an American boy and within my dear heart I so wish he and Willie had gotten together....
This is what it looks like when artists paint a masterpiece. Brilliant, really well done
Some of the best guitars I`ve ever heard. It is like nowadays Beethoven`s crescendo.

Cowboy Neal gets things done.
Pacero back when Grover was still tickling the ivories
outstanding video...Jerry and Brent shined together throughout the years...some the best years!!
Such a masterpiece. Forever my favorite Dead song. I'm 18 years old and my dad introduced me to their music and I'm immensely grateful.
wow that’s good to hear 😀
"More than this I will not ask/Faced with mysteries dark and vast/Statements just seem vain at last . . ." My favorite line from my all-time favorite Dead song. And this is one of the best live performances of it that I've ever come across! :)
Sheer beauty
Still the greatest song ever written.
B Reezy amen. The best ever
My favorite

I listen to this often, its a favorite of mine, particularly when I am driving....
Guitar and vocals: Santa Claus

old, and die but he is in our hearts. Never willl be any person like Jerry
he was not that old stop that
Jerry is over 200,000 years old. Possibly much older...
and?
and a few days maybe?
Jerry is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, he is beyond time. Peace
Happy Birthday to the one and only legend, Jerry Garcia.
Im so thankful for the music being shared im sure had some fun in my life and these boys were the reason i was able to dance and now a dawn of a new sounds beautiful the birds are singing outside the door as if they are singing in the band
Unique, beautiful... I must have been here 100 times in the last three years.

I am so glad I was around when Jerry was ...what a pleasure it still is to watch him play.
maybe if we all listened to more of this,we would not be so mad at each other !
I agree. People are mad at stuff for no reason.
Scott York o there are alot of reasons to be mad in todays world but listening to the dead does make the day a little better...
saw them 3 times before Jerry's passing and was in strawberry fields in NY central park when he passed. I feel so blessed to have been a part of something so special. Never have I found what I did at their shows. They are priceless but I hope something comes along similar, this world needs it so much!!
Beautiful Gorgeous Song / so much cool lyrics and story--Inspiration moves me brightly!
Was blessed to have been able to see them live !! Miss the shows, but am grateful for the print they left on my soul!!! Long live the Dead!!!

I think the most beautiful of all Dead songs.
Insobriety + Grateful Dead x Jerry's hair = Cool 2 the 10th power
A beautiful song with the music and lyrics about life and love that fit so well and in the end it seems both win.
was turned on to the Dead at age 10 by my brother Glen, I'm 57 now, Thanks Bro! What a great ride!
One of my favorite songs
INSPIRATION!!! Move me brightly.......thank you Jerry, job complete
RIP Jerry and Brent. So much passion for music in the both of them.
I never thought a jam band could be so awesome RIP Jerry
great comment izzydance13. i was fortunate, i got to see jerry and the boys from 92-95. i am so thankful that i had that opportunity. everytime i see a video tears come to my eyes. i miss the shows so much. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JERRY!!! you live on through the music.
One of the best Lady With a Fan I have ever heard. Grateful for you sharing it...
Such a beautiful and unique tune... thanks for sharing!
Saw them winterland when they first played this sing. Flawless and great song. Sometime in the late 70s i think can't really recall when.
Just one of the many reasons why we Love The Grateful Dead so much.
This is america's musical legacy (and jazz), and I wear it with pride.
Immortality Achieved. Although your light has dimmed, you left us a spark. 💜
Chills...really stands alone in their catalog of amazing music. Had this one really stuck in my head during more than one trip
Thats what keeps these videos free
RIP Brent. 22 years today.....gone but never forgotten...
this is a magical journey~~~and as a bassist, i love the progression and melody, coupled with lyrics~~~it all fits~~gotta love that
Nope I can't stand this music
+Max Dolof suit yerself then~~count the time, and know that any band has on/off gigs~~the Dead were known for the unpredictable nature of the "beast"~~
I was there....great show, kicked off a stunning 1987 summer tour....
Awesome. One of my favorite Dead songs. A great live version!!
Great video, awesome quality. Thanks for posting my favorite Dead song!!
With the drum parts worked out, everything else snapped together like puzzle pieces."[9]
Rhythm guitarist Bob Weir's "Estimated Prophet" was written in septuple time. It was in quick 7
4 but it didn't swing. Yet. For my homework that night, I combined two fast sevens and played half-time over it. The two sevens brought the time around to an even number - the phrasing is in two bars of seven, so technically the time signature is in 14
8. But that's getting technical. In layman's terms, 'Estimated Prophet' suddenly grooved."[9]
The band was in great form for most of the Brent years, this is no exception. Wonderful musicians making music that touches the soul.
As ahhhh, tears to my eyes, twitching to my toes....😍thanks for lovely post.
Love love love this performance! Heart braking.
Fucking awesome! Good Quality! I miss those days so much!!!
I MISS JERRY AND BRENT!
+sweetbubbles love Brent died 3 years to the day after this concert
Oh, me too. Every day. I chased them around the country. Do folks even do that now?
This was some of the last of Jerry's great shows. Just before the coma. Whats even better is I was there hearing this as it was recorded. I love this song. I really don't think Jerry was the same after the coma. I never saw another show after that. He wasn't the same.
It's amazing. You watch Jerry on that guitar, and it looks like he's not sure where the chord is, but he nails it just in time. Jerry magic!
This is one of the best terrapin stations I've heard in my life!
I love Jerry's strength and confidence. Jerry, double drummers & "Tiger"
Will "Tiger" Roar? Dreams come true and I know we will get there soon
I am absolutely obsessed with this song.
amazing performance !
Thanks for posting ! Jerry would have been 68 this year and I bet he would still be performing !!
I was at this show... my first one of many... such awesome memories.
So good, so sweet, it hurts because Jerry is alive even though he isn't.
