First video of yours that I watched, and I'm so happy I came across your channel. Just got into this hobby, and almost everything is group by which is so annoying! You really helped me pick my first keyboard. Great content, and thanks so much!
this is a fantastic breakdown with sensible options. great work!
Perfect video and right on time thank you!
really love how much time and effort you put into organizing and making the video! it'll help out a lot of people hopefully
Thank you for watching!
This is such a good video, ur realistic and ACC helpful, keep it up 👍
This is so helpful for a newbie like me.. thanks and keep it up
Really informative, appreciate the effort!
Glad you found it helpful!
Sometimes I have no idea about the other options for some layout instock budget keyboard like HHKB, and 1800 layout because I know just some of the vendors and most of their stock have 60%, 65%, and 75%. This video helps me to find out that there are more instock options out there, Thanks 💖
This video series is super duper good. Its such a good consolidation of entry information for beginners. In the future, it might be even more amazing if you could include high level specs on screen as you are talking about each board. hotswap/solder, mounting style, stab style, plate material.
Thank you, and great suggestion! I will include specs on screens on my future videos when appropriate
Dude I just started getting into keyboards like a year ago and I’m getting all my stuff to build my first keyboard for my birthday (my birthday is mid November) and your videos have been really helpful.
Any tips?
When’s your birthday? Day I mean…

@sheesh bro yes
@sheesh bro gk61 of course lol
Super underrated creator and content! Your videos are great :)
Thanks a bunch
You are 100% the most underrated content creator in this hobby. Thank you for the wonderful videos Jimmy.
For real wish I saw this video before getting a Tofu not that I regret it I just didn't know there were other nice 60%-65% other than Tofu, Bakeneko, Kbd67.
Fantastic video, Jimmy. Subscribed :)
Thank you and welcome!
very helpful! thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Lifesaver! Thank you
I have one of the powder coat Bakeneko, and it is very smooth. Definitely think it's an improvement over the painted cases.
I completely forgot about KBDFan's Tofu65 which should definitely be on this list. It's basically the same as the Tofu60 and you can also mod it (check out tutorials on CZcams). There's also the KBD8X for TKL.
Regarding Drop keyboards, I should've made this more clear in my video. Yes, they are quite expensive for what they offer and are often not recommended due to the north-facing sockets, integrated plate, and only 3-pin switches. I don't think the first two cons are that big of a deal - north-facing switches are less of an issue these days due to long-pole switches, and not everyone wants to have a flexy gasket mounted case. The 3-pin switch is definitely annoying however.
But I don't want to ignore everyone who has a great experience with their Drop keyboards. I've talked to folks who aren't that deep into the hobby that owns a Drop keyboard and love them. It's also hard to ignore all of the online reviews. From an enthusiast perspective, you can definitely do better, but the Drop keyboards are always there as an option and could work for a lot of people.
With the soon-to-be released Keychron Q2 however, that will most likely be the better choice for most folks vs the Drop ALT (unless you want case RGB). And regarding the Drop CTRL & SHIFT, it seems like the Epomaker MOD001/003/004 could be a better choice if you're looking to do additional mods. Check out Keybored's video on the 003, the master of modding budget keyboards: czcams.com/video/_7cq9hz8WVA/video.html
Is the keychron q2 essentially going to be a successor to the Q1?
This video just earned you a subscriber!
Thank you!
This is fantastic.
nice video!
This is a useful rundown. Somewhat frustrating to watch great reviews from enthusiasts on boards with closed group buys. Subbing as this was super useful content!
great video ! I think you should've included the KBD 8x and Monstargear K80 for the TKL section, and also GMK Wob is on Amazon sometimes, I just bought some the other day
omg can't believe i missed the KBD8X as well even after rewatching this video so many times 🙃
Crazy amount of concise info. Is there a 2022 version? Lol
Other options for instock kits are the BM series from KPRepublic. They have a range of sizes available and are pretty decent for the money. Wouldn't recommend the 60% though as only that isn't the best value for money in its size
great video
keep it up
Thank you!
hihi consider the mw65, it is a 52$ stacked acrylic from taobao, i have personally used it, it has a few different plate options and is either hotswap or soldered, the typing expierence is kinda flexy, it doesnt have much heft though. the sound is quite nice and balanced, you can change sound with foams or pe/tape mods
glad that i haven't bought keychron Q1 yet since i prefer the 65%'s one. can't wait for the Q2
thank you very much!
You're welcome!
:)
The kprepublic bm80 (TKL) got me into the hobby and the keyboard kit was cheap at $70 without key switches and caps. Still waiting on my BM68 to try the 65% layout.
Scored me a bakaneko. Thanks! :D
Nice! Which color did you get?
@@jimmynguyen973 A white one. I panicked and checked out super fast. Didn’t know how long they would last.
@@jimmynguyen973 Now I gotta figure out switches and caps. 😳
commenting for the algorithm, such a great vid.
Thank you!
so the tokyo60 was my very first board and i highly recommend it getting started. im currently in the process of getting it upgraded with new PCB and matching caps(in 20 months after GMK Hunt ends lmao...sadge)
I can't wait for the NK65 Entry Edition restock!
Which color you going for?
@@jimmynguyen973 I’m going for an OREO cookie theme, so I’m hoping to get the Smoke color NK65. I already got some Everglide Oreo switches filmed & lubed put aside for the build
for tkl you should definitely also include the epomaker gk87 for a more budget option
Had no idea that was an option, good call-out!
Great video, btw I like the calendar, where did you get it?
thanks! i stole it from my partner, but she got it on etsy (jianghue)
Hey! What keycap sets fit baka60 I’m looking for some red and black ones
Quality videooo
How does the Bakeneko60 compare to the Freebird60? How big is the difference in sound between the cherry clip in stabs (Bakeneko60) and durock v2 screw in (freebird60)? I am torn when comparing these two and don't know which one to get? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Don't care about the paint as much as Bakeneko60 has powder coated versions which are durable.
Bakeneko is pog I love mine
Hey, love your videos!
I'm planning to get a new custom kb, do you recommend the kbd67 lite or the bakeneko60/65
Thanks!
Thanks! Personally I would go for the bakeneko60/65 because I find metal keyboards more satisfying to use
Hey! The KBDfans 75% v3.1 has an RGB layer between the top and bottom parts of the case. You should probably mention the difficulties that come with modding a GMMK Pro, as well as the Q1's reliance on mods to feel/sound good. - A KBDfans 75% v3.1 shill
Keybored made a great video on the Akko Mod 003!
Yeah I just saw it yesterday! Have it linked in the vid now
Man I really love the 1800 layout, wish there were more of these.
Do you by any means know any upcoming groupbuys or something new now 1 1/2 months after this video? especially with ISO support would be incredibly helpful
Check out www.mechgroupbuys.com/keyboards?status=upcoming for upcoming group buys
Jimmy out here trying to make sure everyone starts 2022 broke as always! haha
Also do you plan on ever reviewing some metal keycaps?
Hey Albert! I don't have any plans atm. I'm actually planning on mostly stepping away from keyboard review videos to make bandwidth for other types of videos (my next one will be testing if "gaming keyboards" actually makes a noticeable difference)
@@jimmynguyen973 Awesome to hear that!
Great video, but you missed the BM65 and Tofu65
what keycap set do you have on the savage65?
ur underated
Personally I would not recommend drop keyboards anymore. They are severely overpriced for what they offer these days. Especially the alt ctrl shift series
Samee
That's fair, but they're a consistent option for those layouts. I think of the Drop keyboards as more like "they're there if you really can't wait for a restock of another keyboard"
i disagree the signature drop boards like whatever the TKL and 65 are called are def not worth it for the price imo but the Tokyo60 and the other lower priced boards are great for newcomers to the hobby. all hotswap and they all mostly come with stabs too. i think those are great options
@@michaelf5185 you can buy tokyo60 other places too, its mot drop exclusive.
@@michaelf5185 but those r ok
should i get the bakeneko60 or brutal60
Can i use a 63 keys dz60 pcb with brutal60
tysm
How did you pack so much into 16 mins?!
frog tkl is restock montly? bro I can never find it in stock
Is the ginkgo65 gonna be in-stock?
Check out the Marsback M1 if you like 75% and RGB.
It's so frustrating that the GMMK Pro and Q1 both don't have a standard white colour (the GMMK 'white' is quite silvery) as it means the only viable option is the ID80 V2 for a white 75%
Also, can you include stores for artisan keycaps :D
Maybe you should've mentioned which of these have north facing switches, since some of these do.
Does the Baka60 support screw-ins, or are clip-ins proprietary? Thanks in advance!
The baka60 kit comes with clip-ins, but screw-ins should work just fine since it's just a tray-mount
keychron q2 and akko67 is most waited keeb for me
The Frog TKL sells faster out than you can blink. Calling it in stock isn’t very much true for at least a year before hopefully the demand drops and it will be more widely available.
It sucks that the supply doesn't meet the demand, but I still thought it was worth adding since it restocks monthly and you don't have to wait months to get it if you manage to grab one.
I feel like a mention of the crystal/bestype id80 woulda been good because of the gasket mount
The crystal's gasket mount doesn't work. It's not like gmmk pro where it doesn't flex much, no, the crystal's gaskets don't even reach the bottom case.
@@user-kz9rz8ui1c so it’s worse than the gmmk pro?
@@tatertots5197 yep. Unless you like the anesthetic, the gmmk pro is superior.
@@user-kz9rz8ui1c well I don’t like how the gmmk pro looks so I bought the integrated plated id80 😈
how about the bm boards from kprepublic?
me watching this video knowing i wont buy any of these products anytime soon but still watching it
I've been trying to buy the bakeneko for a while now for my first custom kb but for some reason its always sold out for me . So I went with the freebird60 instead
Yeah it's unfortunate the Bakeneko hasn't been restocking as much, but the freebird looks solid!
@@jimmynguyen973 Thank you for taking the time to reply I'm really looking forward to it thank you!
I wish there were more keyboards with a left f row style like the sunsetter or the noxary 378
For sure, I personally would love to see more southpaw keyboards
Zenith, extra should be coming up and even aftermarket. The new Geon Works has the left F-Keys and Numpad

what about the tofu 65?
Kinda outdated tbh
@@ceementality im thinking of using it for my first build. please elaborate?
Ah, completely forgot about that one. Overall it's going to be the same as the Tofu60. You could say its outdated (like the Tofu) because of it's simple case design and tray mounts, but if you're looking for something simple the Tofu 65 will work for you. The drop alt and ctl are really bad for the price. I wish you wouldn't have included them, because it is just going to have more new people in the hobby get scammed by a board that is 2 years behind everything else on the market.
No 40%? :(
Sorry 40% gang 😅 I just thought it was too niche. I don't actually know many in stock 40% besides the Planck
@@jimmynguyen973 don't blame you for that tbh, most good 40% boards are expensive and are gb
First kb is a tofu65 from kbd, this video will help me empty my wallet some more
From my eyes the Brutal60 is such a bad deal.
Do not ever recommend the drop alt/ctrl/entr
Their PCBs are terribly designed and will actually overheat from having the RGB turned on, not only that but if you ever decide to get a coiled cable then the PCB will just refuse to work.
Just fyi geon is pronounced gun
Btw Glorious stole artwork from a small designer for their keycaps. Don't buy glorious products.
after getting my first gmk keycaps, i was absolutely disappointed. GMKs are the most expensive in the market and yet their packaging is straight up from a dollar store.
Mine came completely messed up, keys were out of place, theres no way to reseal or to store the keycaps back (mods/novelties/spacebars) once open its forever opened. a freaking $40 doubleshot keycap from aliexpress has better packaging.
and the worst part is having to wait MONTHS for a damn key fucking caps for a quality no different than a $40 doubleshot keycap from aliexpress. Ordering a new car arrives faster than my overpriced useless keyboard cosmetic.
GMK packaging is trash for sure, especially with the smaller kits that comes in the smaller trays and plastic wrap. But I would not say GMK quality is no different than a cheaper Aliexpress set. The quality is better, check out the colors and legend alignment. Is it 4x-5x better? Definitely not. For those who want the best colors and legends, GMK is it. But for most folks, I say stick with PBT keycaps.
