IMJAMAICA caught up with Skip, grandson of reggae icon Bob Marley and son son Melody Maker and fashion designer Cedella Marley to find out what he's up to
I think his voice and style is a little forced. As a Jamaican I think he's trying to come off too Rasta instead of being himself because the whole Rasta image is more marketable. Still he's talented

None unto Bob Marley like Damian Marley--Rita's children many not like it, but that is the truth. He is the stone that the builder refused. As Lauryn Hill stated, many seek to duplicate the imagery of Bob Marley; whilst not knowing what it took to create said image. Gong did not seek to duplicate the physical of Bob and there is no need to as the Universe gave him the spirit and essence of Bob Marley. Look at his energy, his essence, his music, his lyrics, he is totally different and at the same time he is just like Bob--this is becuase Jr. Gong share the Bob Marley core.
Damian is incredibly talented, he inherited musical talent from his father, & having his mother's Miss World looks helps in the industry. But it's wrong to say Rita's children "may not like" Damian's success when one of them- Stephen- has played a huge role in JR Gong's rise, producing Damian's first three albums (Mr Marley, Halfway Tree & Welcome to Jamrock, as well as three songs on Distant Relatives, including the hit Patience). Damian is the better dancehall DJ/toaster/rapper, Stephen & Ziggy are the better vocalist/singer & multi-instrumentalist. Damian is the most popular of the siblings now, but in the 1980s/1990s it was Ziggy & if you listen to those songs he wrote when he was @ his peak- Tomorrow People, Tumbling Down, Look Who's Dancing, Black My Story (Not History), Conscious Party...these were really good songs. Ziggy's ten years older, so it's now Damian's turn. Stephen is in between & he's spent most of his career spreading his talent around, backing Ziggy as a Melody Maker, producing Damian & Julian, remaking his father's music (Chant Down Babylon album, including the huge hit "Turn Your Lights Down Low" feat. Lauryn Hill); unlike others who've mostly focused their talents on their own careers, you shouldn't judge Stephen purely on his own albums (which are good by the way), his repertoire includes producing music for the Fugees, Erikah Badu, Eve, Inner Circle, Capleton etc... Sharon & Cedella had their own vibe as Melody Makers, not trying to clone Rita & the I Threes. Now let Skip, Jo Mersa & the next generation come through without unnecessary comparisons about who is better...

This mostly has to do with image/brand engineering to me; he is young, time will if this the scion of a scion is the real deal. He is amongst many a Marley boys and Bob essence is everywhere; most of what we are seeing is fabrication in its most polite form...
I was not going to say anything but you are right and to be honest, the Marley's need to do something about that before it is too late. The boy is talented as fuck to me(I don't think he is faking it) and I love his songs so far, very vibey. He also has a smooth voice just like butter ,however; it is bad enough that he will forever be under that Marley legacy cloud but it does not have to be made as obvious as it is. I don't know the guy but I would like to see him, I don't want to see Bob. He is going to struggle with this even more because he really does resemble Bob in some ways so the comparisons are going to be hard to shake. But his people need to let him have a little bit more wiggle room for him to express his inner being, I am not expecting Bob, the world already had a Bob; I want to see Skip.

The only thing he lacks was the struggle of growing in a Trench Town, Kingston dodging bullets and struggling through poverty, crime and depression. So he lacks the core that drives his grandfather... But his sound and looks resembles Bob more than Ziggy, Stephen, Ky-Mani and the rest....
