      @@denzterwastaken thats not the platter making the sound, its the motor. Theres no major damage to the platter if it does the seektest.

    You have a lovely amount of excellent drives. I love those Seagate Medalist drives. 10:25 the resonance of those is probably what makes me like them so much.

      Yeah they are some of my favorites, too. The motor sound is very unique. They also were some of the first drives to show a SMART status and had defect management.

    The one at 0:25 is the same sounding as the one in my i386 ibm ps/2 55sx

      @negr-zorik, It's not 2.1GB. For Quantum, the storage volume is indicated on the end side of the hermoblock.

    WD Piranha ? Thats one i had no idea existed. Watching these HDD videos i do tend to see A drive or 2 that i didn't know they made.

      WD Piranha has a double height and 4 platters instead of 2 platters. So it had twice the capacity of a WD Caviar at that time, but was kinda expensive

    how is it possible that the Caviar 11000 was made in September 1999? was it being used in some kind of embedded system or something?

      seems so, it also has an OEM sticker. or maybe the letter after the manufacturing date means it has been recertified ('S' maybe stands for Singapore)

      to show activity while reading or writing. almost all Quantum drives had this feature

      Also I noticed that WD Caviar 280 and 2200 have a LED that lit for just a second

      @@mikixyz123 many early western digital caviar drives had a push-in connector to put an LED on the PCB. If you insert an LED, it acts as an indicator light. If you have an old WD drive, the LED port is on the opposite side as the IDE connection, on the bottom of the drive

    funny I have a box of old, small capacity drives that I am giving to charity,
    and alot of the ones you showed here are the same ones. mostly out of
    computers that ran windows 95, back when drive and memory size didn't
    matter that much. they're too small for much Data storage,and Not SATA
    so they're not strap-able, so they're no real use any more

      No, this is the only drive of my collection that doesn't work. It's only spinning and not able to seek.

      In the early 90s, a series of Kalok/Nec hard drives were produced, of a non-standard 3" size with a thickness of about one centimeter and with a non-standard interface connector.
