Hunting here in Sweden, I grew up with the "zero-then-never-touch"-mentality regarding scopes. I always zeroed for MPBR and thought dialing turrets were just for guys trying to be tacticool. Through listening to the podcast, you guys have really changed my mind on that!
Yeah I think it’s just as easy to have an exposed turret, zero at 100, and then dial to your MPBR and only touch the scope if presented with a long shot.
One thing to add to Ryan's note about using a chronograph, would be to also space your shots out every few minutes to give time for the barrel/chamber to cool to get an accurate cold bore velocity average. Cracking half a dozen rounds off in just a couple minutes most likely will make that average velocity be higher than the cold bore 1st shot noticeably.
Thanks for sharing this interesting and helpful topics and the things around it! This concept have been a really good help for me trough the years since i started 3d printing rings for my exposed turret scopes and others scopes that not have a endstop turret or originally exposed turrets but with good tracking. It really can change the effectivness out in the woods or field, and for me enables more scopes to be used more active since i print the whole tower for not exposed turrets. It reaches out to 600m on my bird setup with my favorite cartridge for birds in my hunting location with very good precition for my use. For other bullets for deer and white tail i have other data and rings and it takes 15sec to switch between them on the same setup. As you mentioned, it all comes down to the use, the user and conditions. Not for all, but helps alot for many! It is also vice to shoot the distances every 100m inc to verify the hits before trusting it on any game! Good hunting 😊
Do you or will you offer custom turrets for crossbow compatible scopes? Crossbows are continuing to become more common and this could be a very useful tool for the “stick launchers” to make a faster and more accurate system. I find this to be an area of product advancement that might just be lacking in the hunting realm. Anyway love the podcast and Im looking forward to future episodes!

Nice concept, but the weakness is hunting near sea level with a customized turret for specific elevation and environmental conditions, then traveling to the mountains at 7000 feet to go hunting. The turret presets and path of bullet will be different. I had this problem with a Leupold custom turret. I sold my vx6. Again, it is a great concept if you really intend to hunt in locations where you always hunt and do not travel to extreme locations. To be honest, I prefer the Swarovski multi ring user adjustable ballistic turrets that I can adjust to any local conditions easily, Steiner, Burris, and others are now making variations on a type of a quick user adjustable ballistic turret. I can my bring my Boss equipped Browning with a Swarovski scope and adjust to any local environmental conditions and pretty much any 7mm RM load development within ten shots be "dialed in" to 700 meters with preset distance rings and then go precision shooting/hunting. I like Vortex products a lot, but the engineering team needs to have a third option available to those who want to pay for a user ajustable ballistic turret. Having said that, the ballistic turret needs to be taller on the Swarovski to add at least 3 or 4 more rings and/or make the rings thiner. My current project long-range moutain hunter build is going to be a 26-inch, flutted, and threaded 5/8-24 plus an Eric Cortina tuner break. Chambered in 300 prc or 300 wsm with a Trigger tech trigger, a tikka action or the super smooth aftermarket U300 pristine action receiver, then finished with a mdt hunt 26 foldable chasis system, polymer aics compatable magazine. Would like to top it off with a Vortex riflescope with a user adjustable mult ring ballistic turret system similar to a Swarovski Z8i 3.5 to 28 or a Z6i version. Vortex has talented engineers who could bring the product to the next level with an optional third turret choice and really compete with Swarovski and other manufacturers. I do own Vortex binocular with ballistic calculator and love it. I just would like to see the Vortex Razor LHT with a third option user adjustable turret for those who travel alot.
If you go to a different situation w your ballistic turret )that might include your gun creates more pressure because it’s dirty or change of elevation) go to a sweet spot like 500 yards and get you 500 zeroed and that would fix your hunting situation. It would then be close enough for most of your shots.
Look up thlr’s channel. Elevation is one thing, temperature another, and air pressure another. Zeiss’ ASV solution has worked for years. These new turrets are better.
I know you're just trying to point out that elevation affects the accuracy of these turrets but let's be honest - 7000m is an insane example for hunting and doesn't exist in north america. Turrets like these and the Leupold CDS are probably fine for 99% of us.
So. 13:00 What is an ideal Temperature Range? In terms of +/- swing. And what is an ideal altitude range. In terms of +/-? For example, I live in British Columbia, so a few hours west, I'm at the coast, of BC and Alaska. A few hours East, and I'm at the Rocky Mountain Peaks of Revelstoke Banff and Jasper. But if I were to select a 'home range' in the Okanagan and Kootenays... What kind of swing ranges can the custom turret handle? (with that in mind, a customer could probably identify similar regions, in altitude, to their home or most frequent spot.
Kenton industries has been doing custom turrets for a long time. I'm of the opinion that there are simply too many variables to consider to tie yourself down to one specific loading, elevation, temp, etc... Granted the turret could be changed back to stock but still it's just one more thing to deal with. quite frankly I think the modern reticles available negate the need for a custom turret...
There is truth to what you're saying. Having multiple options at your fingertips isn't a bad thing. I like the Swarovski ballistic turret system that allows you to change your stops. Less range options than the Kenton.
@@desertrat79 I'm not familiar with the Swarovski turrets but considering they're swaro I bet they are top notch... I'm not completely opposed to some of this technology but if you hunt at various elevations and the temperature swings could be over 50° I just question how worthwhile it'd be having a turret made. Besides it still needs to be challenging otherwise it's pointless to me...
Kenton Industries is partnered with Vortex and as a company does this for a living 20+ years. They are certainly the experts and have a lot of yardage options as well.
Question, does muzzle velocity change depending on your altitude? I understand “air resistance” changes yielding a different DOPE requirement, but would I need to bring a chrono on a mountain hunt, or can I use my “home” velocity and just updated atmospheric conditions?
What scope bases and rings are you using on that Nosler 21 I’ve got a 21 and the comb sets to low for me even with low rings and the bases that come on the rifle. I talked to Nosler. They said go with the 1 inch tube scope.
I’m starting to see the main concern about this is the repeating ability to track to the same position every time, especially after having a good amount of use.
You're right. You don't need them since you're probably not a good enough shooter to utilize them. You obviously didn't listen to the podcast. It's not about extending your range. It's about speed. So unless you know all of your elevation holds for every 25 yards out to, let's say 600 yards, you probably aren't faster than the custom turret
@chadillac95 😆. The title referred to extending range... Exactly, why would I use that rough system although more beginner friendly, when I already use a more precise system? BTW that's quite the assumption that I'm not a good enough shooter to utilize that system, where did you come up with that? 😅
None of this is new, if you dont have a range finder with ballistic data and angle comp these turrets are usless. If you have a huge barometric pressure drop it will be off. better off learning your system and have a range finder with ballistic data in it. just saying

How about a cartridge comparison between the 17 HMR & the 17 Mach 2? Surprising results in ballistic gel 😮 that would be sooo cool!

Does the Viper hd 3-15x44 come with a free turret???
Not sure if it does but, I can check mine which is actually being swapped and looking for a new home.

Gota watch the studio tour podcast.

Free turret! Never got a code, how do i go about getting a code for my free vortex HD turret?
Turrets are cool but let's talk about something cooler the 340 weatherby magnum. Speaking of.... up next on 10 minute talks the 340 weatherby magnum
"Must have been a different company" just say it mark! Huskemaw or leupold? Lol
I just can't wrap my mind around how putting a custom turret could do anything to extend my range when I already have mil/moa turrets.
