GRANULAR EFFECTS IN THE KORG WAVESTATE - TUTORIAL

- In this tutorial, I explore how to approximate the sound of granular effects within the Korg Wavestate. Although the Korg Wavestate does not provide adjustable sample start and end times, by modulating the parameters in the timing and sample lanes, it's possible to create a granular-like sound from the wavestate.
I start from the absolute beginning, so those who are unfamiliar with the Wavestate can follow along. Below I have provided times within the tutorial for those that would prefer to skip over parts they may already be familiar with. Similarly, if you'd simply like to hear this effect (though not necessarily learn how to program it), you can skip ahead to 12:15, 13:35, 15:40, or 16:18.
0:00 - Introduction
2:15- Initialize patch
2:35- Load samples
3:10 - Choosing sample for step A1
4:00 - Choosing sample for step A2
4:25 - Soloing a step to audition a sample
5:00 - Add steps to end
5:40 - Choosing samples quickly for steps A3-16

haha very interesting. i figured how to make sequences on my WS not long ago, but im fairly new to granular methods as a whole. the crossfading options alone are pretty amazing. and it looks like granular on a WS will work pretty amazingly, esp with some delay added also

Great ideas. I guess you can call it weird sounds but for noise based music or some experimental idm like mentioned Gantz Graf this is highly usable. I have a sampler for that kind of sounds for now abut I'm considering getting Wavestate. Anyway subscribed and looking for more interesting ideas.
Great video! This actually has me even more interested in this synth. I like using waves as basis for synthesis and I’ve actually had a lot of fun using my Digitakt as a sample based synth. This, being multi-timbral and the huge polyphony and mod options seems perfect for me!
One question though, could you in theory be doing these insane sequencing tricks and glitches on one part while a soft piano is playing on another part (for example sequenced on a different midi channel)?
Yes, easily. You just program another one of the four layers and then use the keyboard split function.
I recently bought myself a Korg Wavestate and increasingly find that I can spent hours fiddling with the sounds and getting weird effects (such as in this excellent video) but at the end of all that time, I start to think 'well what have I actually achieved?', I've not learnt to play a new song or improved on what I can already play. I've just spent all my time fiddling around to make a few weird sounds. So I've just wasted several hours on nothing really!
Hmmm, what do you mean by "achieved"? "Achievement" seems to require some sort of standard of success. If the standard you are using is learning to play a new song, then perhaps a piano or keyboard would be a better choice of instrument to work with. If your standard is to be absorbed in a world of sound and explore strange and inspiring sonic possibilities, then the time you spend with your wavestate could also be considered its own achievement. Also, let's not forget that those weird sounds and effects can be recorded, arranged and eventually turned into compositions! :) Just my 2 cents; thanks for watching~
@@bluecliffsynthesis6685 I thought your video was excellent. So I wasn't criticising anything you were doing here, I was just making a general observation on the machine itself. I was very excited when I first got it and looked forward to getting some great sounds from it. But then I started to realise that I was really just spending hours playing with the settings and the sounds and had nothing really to show for it . Perhaps it's just not the machine for me! But keep up the great work.
@@loskioskbears Hehe, for sure! Glad you liked the video. I was more offering my statement as a general reflection. The Wavestate has a particular workflow that may not appeal to everyone, so it very well may not be the right fit for you. Either way, wishing you happy creating!

I wonder if you can have granularization effect by modifying a delay time from step seq lane... And also as you can load your own samples into WS now you can slice a sample and load the slices to put them on the sample lane

Not sure what you mean by this? My device starts up on the last patch that I was using.
You can create and select a different set list, and whatever you put in the first slot will be the default patch. Pretty sure that the selected set list persists across power cycling.

haha, it's possible to make music out of anything! :D For me, I feel granular effects can be useful as "ear candy" - embellishments within a track to complement textures or percussive elements.

I'd use it as the background layer for a pad, with a very long attack time. Think the D50's Native Dance pad for example.
