  • In today's episode of Sick Riffs, Make Them Suffer guitarist Nick McLernon won't be showing you one of the band's riffs, but rather his pre-show warmup riff - and it's filled with palm-muting and pinch harmonics to give you a comprehensive six-string workout.
McLernon plays a Jackson 2019 Pro Series Soloist SLA2 electric guitar in dropped baritone tuning (AEADF#B), reflecting his self-confessed "unorthodox playing style". He runs the guitar through a Kemper amp modeler.

Sick Riffs is a Guitar World video series designed to help guitarists affected by the coronavirus. Self-isolating players around the world have each filmed a lesson where they teach you one of their own guitar riffs, up close and personal. If you dig the lesson, we encourage you to buy music and merch from the artist or stream their music.

You are an extremely talented guitarists...the second verse on "Erase me", where you change up the riff going back into chorus is absolutely killer.. Good work man.

@@synhet84 This is the riff that made me discover the band and makes midnight run my favorite song. I've even learned how to play midnight run. I can kinda see how someone would confuse the two as they have plenty of similarities.

@@bluepyro8972 how the hell do you mimic the sound he makes when you bend the 5th fret on the intro - effects? I can usually do all the other harmonics and the like that he does but that one on the intro on Midnight Run is a special one.

Paddy That’s still a massive string. A .64 will get you there but to each their own. That’s what makes guitar cool though. Nicks setup is borderline unplayable to me but he makes it work for him and he’s an awesome guitarist.

If you have a heavy picking hand, you will need at least a .70 string on a 25.5" scale if you're playing chords down there. I have a 27" scale guitar and the .62 string was always Beoowing, even at Bb. Today i slapped a .70 on it, no BEOOOW until Low G.
