- There is a surprisingly large amount of references to Mario in Metroid games and vice versa. In this video, we're going to cover them all.

Man samus sleeping in the bed with that suit on must be extremely uncomfortable
Sly Fix I don't think so.
I mean, she can fight and move extremely easy with the suit, so, why would it be uncomfortable?
Anyway, at the beginning of Metroid Prime 3, we can see that she is sleeping without the suit. She wears it once she wakes up.
Well I apologize if I said something off
Bunch of retards cant take a joke...
Her turning into a ball is more uncomtable
A Cow lol you didn't know the lesser known Metroid lore, no one was upset I don't
Samus: I'm resting for mother brain.
Mario: How did u get here, aren't you supposed to be at planet Zebes?
Samus: *sweats profusely*
She’s taking a much needed vacation
As you can see, the first letter of Metroid starts with M,
meaning "Man, that's a stretch."
The second one is not really a reference, it's mainly because Wario Land and Metroid 2 use the same engine
Popple funny that you say that. Wario Land 4 and Metroid Fusion also use the same engine!
The same guy is in charge of both franchises, Sakamoto, right?
Frahd Chikun yep, that’s also true
Popple So that means that we're going to get a new Wario game on Samus Returns' engine?
Zekeram12 nah, that's unlikely
Peach has always been a fan of Samus.
Lightman 2120
Geez, that's cool.
Printsess Peetch
GamerNation Princess peach
Lightman 2120 Nice reference to that Nintendo Power comic
Sonikku A glad someone caught it.
To all of you saying DK is not Mario; Donkey Kong was originally a Mario game that featured both characters, they're both in Mario Party, and Mario & Sonic Olympic Games. While DK has evolved into his own franchise, he's still a Mario character at heart.
Technically, Mario is a Donkey Kong character, since the original Donkey Kong was released in 1981 with Mario Bros. being released in 1983.
The Apistevist
Mario didn't even have a name back then. He was just "Jumpman." That said, technically speaking that Donkey Kong is a different Donkey Kong.
+Clnr0n05 I'm aware of this. It doesn't change anything I said.
The goal wasn't to change that. It was to reinforce what you said.
+Clnr0n05 My mistake.
Sound effects aren’t necessarily references as for reusing assets is a common and smart tactic
Wario Land and Metroid II use the same engine.
It saves money and makes production easier.
2:30 Not a portal. It's the generator dynamo in the sanctuary fortress from Prime 2.
It is! After the 1000000th time that place made me restart my visor, I'm kinda mad I didn't see it on my own.
The ones in DKCR make sense, since Retro Stuidos were at the helm of both DKCR and the Prime Trilogy
Frahd Chikun
Exactly.
That was pretty cool!
Frahd Chikun the wario ones make sense too as gunpei yokoi made the first 2 metroids (and supervised on super and prime before death) and made all the Mario land/wario land games, same reason kid icarus has metroid references
They are cool, however the DK ones shouldnt be on this list since they arent mario games
Quinten Goss true
All the donkey Kong ones kinda felt like a stretch to me personally. Except the gunship obviously but all the others are kinda pushing it
at 2:35, it resembles more of the gyro thing in the sanctuary fortress more than a portal
DonutAssassin z
Yeah, a good few of the things here are a bit of a stretch to compare them or call them references.
Troy but I mean Retro literally made all the Prime games and the rebooted Donkey Kong Country games so
Gyro?
Gyro Zepelli with the steel balls, right?
gotta be prepared I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Stretching on a lot of these.
Jordan Neal for the portal one, they actually got it wrong... the spinning structure really resembles a gyro energy structure in prime 2, not the portals.. so there's no similarity in what they're saying there is
David Weeks i would say it resembles the temple keys more than the portals and the structure.
i just hate that they called donkey kong "a mario game". i fucking get mario started off in donkey kong, but wouldnt that make mario a donkey kong game, i mean fuckin seriously, also, that only "resembles" the thing.... im not a meteroid fan.............. that would mean im a (dead but besides my point) gaming channel, i resemble jackseptieye
what i meant at the end was the dinosaur thing
also, the mario maker one doesnt count
I’d love to see some kind of crossover game between Nintendo franchises in the future. I know we have Smash, but maybe Nintendo Party or Nintendo Kart would be cool. Maybe I’m dreaming, but an RPG would be awesome!
I'd love for a crossover of just 2 series, like Starfox and Metroid.
There is a girl, she's strong and cute
But she's also shy and wears a suite
So that no one can see when she's having a crush
Because everyone would know since her face would blush
Her name is Samus and she knows how to fight
When she engages the battle
Her enemies will hide
~ Levodaro
Levodaro you my friend have become Nintendo’s poet.
Alexandros Baker and cute too
I read this like it was the DK rap
Pillar guy Perfect XD
Levodaro looks like someone’s off their meds again.
6:18 What the...?! WHO PUT THE STICKERS IN MY SHIP?!
Can confirm that trying to fight Mother Brain without a good night’s sleep is torture
I mean, most of these are just coincidence I think? Like the ones where Mario and co are actually visible in metroid and samus is visible in Mario games can't be faulted, but I feel like stuff like the sounds used where because they had a limited sounds to use in 16 bit and the look of the air holes are just because they have to look remotely pipe-like to justify something coming out of it, in order to fit the semi mechanical cave system samus explores. And as far as textures and backdrops go in dkc, that could be anything. Doesn't specifically have to be tied in with metroid.
Excellent video! Good work!
OH COME ON! AMIIBOS AREN’T REFRENCES OR CAMEOS!
shut up people have their opinions
@@HankSmashes and nobody asked your opinion about opinions
@@mpasqui228 excuse me i dont care if no one asked i just tell it anyway
Yes they are
You must do all Star Fox references in Mario Games and Vice Versa
They share some of the same sound effects
...Uh, yeah, they were both on the GameBoy.
That means nothing. Sound effects aren't hardcoded into the GameBoy but are included in the ROM. That means, two different games can only play the same sound effect if both of the game feature the same sound effect inside the ROM else they can't.
Edit: And according to a comment below, Wario Land and Metroid II share the same engine (which I was expecting because the GBA Metroids used the Wario Land 4 engine) so if you want to complain that the shared sound in Wario Land and Metroid II isn't a reference, the game engine is more of an argument than the console the games were on.
...Okay, but, it's not like the GameBoy can make just _ANY_ sound. The same sounds were bound to show up twice at least once, if that makes any sense. You can't expect every game on a system that can only make beeping and crashing noises to have unique sounds. ...Also, it's possible they might have just reused some sounds to save time, seeing as Wario Land came out four years after Metroid II.
@That Kid Called AJ: First of all, I'm aware of that the sounds the GameBoy can do, are square waves (two channels), noise (one channel) and wave samples (one channel) but it still allows you more freedom than you might think.
In fact, the more complicated a sound is, the less likely it will be recreated in two independantly created games. It's expected to have similar sound effects if said sound is made with a few notes but more complicated ones like the pause and boss hurt sound effects are unlikely to be independantly recreated.
I'm pretty sure, the time constrain isn't much a thing. Older games are much simpler than current ones meaning that they take much less developers and some time.
If anything, it's more the fact that Wario Land uses Metroid II's engine and the creators thought it would be nice to reuse some of the sound effects.
That Kid Called AJ you underestimate the game boy's power
Also, it's because Metroid II, and fusion used the same engines as wario land
A galactic bounty hunter sleeping in the master bed room of a castle in a fantasy world. Totally not suspicious.
Damn, I already knew but series had references of each other but I wasn't expected them to have THIS much of references o_o
since when can Samus's ship have stickers? 10 years later and no one ever told me
Since the original release in 2007 TwilightYonder720. You unlock them by earning medals, then by using the medals to purchase the MP3 Ship Bumper Stickers in the extras gallery. You can unlock them with the same medals in the original release, and in the trilogy.
Mr. Mendelli Except you have to give those tickets to friends who also have the game, so that they can trade THEIR stickers to you.
When I was playing through Wario Land a few days ago (right after finishing Metroid II: Return of Samus) I just assumed the pause sound was something the devs use in a bunch of their games like a signature. I thought so because the old Konami games have the same pause sound effect.
"The iron structure resembles a portal from Metroid Prime 2" hahaha come on dude. That's just a portal. xD
2:36 is more like the weird dynamo structures from Metroid Prime 2's Fortress area, honestly.
Mario: ooh sleeping samus. lets take a look at the real zero suit samus
The "Iron structure" Is the mini dynamo from Metroid Prime 2
Some of these are blatantly not references to basically anything. "This game was localized in English, just like Metroid!" levels of stretching on display.
5:46 not true AT ALL it’s not even remotely alike
Not alike at all
It's not, the sound of Crocomire dying is the same as when samus freezes an enemy with the Ice Beam. 5:05
It does, just slower and a lower pitch.
You forgot to mention that in one of the underwater levels in Tropical Freeze (I think it's Amiss Abyss), a metroid can be seen floating around in the background
You should do videos with all Animal Crossing references in Mario games (and vice versa), all Star Fox references in Mario games (and vice versa), all Warioware references in Mario games (and vice versa), all Donkey Kong references in Mario games (and vice versa), all Nintendo exclusive references in Mario games (like Excitebike, Wild Gunman, Stack-up, Gyromite, Drill Dozer, Helirin, Nintendogs, etc, and vice versa), and all Chibi-Robo references in Mario games (and vice versa).
The references in donkey Kong country makes sense during as how retro Studios developed both the Metroid prime series and donkey Kong country returns and onwards
Zero Suit Samus Yoshi is lowkey thicc.
Also a good number of these are just coincidences and reised assets rather than actual references, but I love me some Metroid so I shall let it slide.
The later Donkey Cong Country games were made by Retro Studios, the same company that made the Metroid Prime series, so it's not super surprising to me that they reference Metroid so much.
The gyro in DKCR resembles more on the gyroscopic ring structure in Sanctuary Fortress from Prime 2. Also Crocomire's death looks like it was inspired from Bowser melting in lava in New Super Mario Bros.
Super Metroid: 1994
NSMB: 2006
2:35 I was expecting to see that reactor core from the sanctuary where you have to be in morph ball.
2:36 another structure in metroid prime 2 : echoes exist as a puzzle in the high fortress zone
I’ve played Prime 3 several times and never knew you could put stickers on the ship
Samus is like the BIGGEST Mario fan.
Easter egg (media) In computersoftware and media, an Easter egg is an intentional inside joke, hidden message or image, or secret feature of a work. It is usually found in acomputer program, video game, or DVD/Blu-ray Disc menu screen. The name is used to evoke the idea of a traditional Easter egg hunt.
2:38 it looks like the central power source in Sanctuary Fortress from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes more than the portal to Dark Aether.
I know this is kinda old but Luigis Mansion referenced Federation Force in one of the hallways posters and its main theme is a remix in the Armadeus Wolfgeist boss battle
huh, Mario jumping on top of Samus, guess he finally got tired of Peach not putting out...
I find it funny how I know all the soundtrack for all the Metroid games you showed
3:13 Okay I was going to make a comment on the portal before but this is a better example, that's the Metroid Prime 2 gunship in the background, both DKCR and Metroid Prime 2 run on the same game engine lol
Except Retro Studios also worked on DKCR. But I find that they put the gunship in there very cool
Thats cool. Metroid: samus’s misadventures
I think that circle think in DKCR is more likely a reference to the Gyro chamber from Sanctuary in Prime 2, rather than the portals.
2:06 while I don’t believe this was directly a Metroid reference, I just noticed a classic DK reference in the background tho that I didn’t see before lol
Cameron E. Retro Studios, the team behind DKC Returns, worked on the Metroid Prime Trilogy, so it wouldn't be surprising. It's also why there are so many overt metroid references in them, like the gunship. The "portal" looks more like either the dark temple keys, or the gyro device in Sanctuary Fortress (both still prime 2)
I like the Paper Mario's Head, Wario's Eye, Nose, and Mustache from Warioware Series, Star Carnival Logo from Mario Party 8, and Mario's Symbol from Super Mario Galaxy Stickers! (Metroid Prime III: Corruption)
You forgot to mention that Tatori Jr. can be jumped on which causes them to slide across the floor just like Beetles from the Mario series.
Theat Structure could also be that gyro from metroid prime 2
there seems to also be a eggman figure in the toybox, but that might just be my eyes playing tricks on me
The Power Grip isn't a reference either, Superstar Saga came out in 2003, Zero Mission (which was the first Metroid game to have the ledge grab listed as a power-up) came out in 2004.
Power grip was first in zero mission, which came out after superstar saga.
Mr.Ridley Samus was originally gonna be a cameo character on Superstar Saga to drink the bean coffee for you, then give you the related item, but was scrapped in favor of E. Gadd, who also replaced other cameo characters like Link and Wario.
I found that one of Robo Fortune's color palattes from Skullgirls is Samus' suit
I'm pretty sure Mario and Luigi super star saga came out before metroid zero mission. Still a neat video tho
Not a Mario game per se but in Kirby Super Star, when you use the Stone ability, Kirby will sometimes, very rarely, change into a Samus statue.
Paper Mario sticker? Strange, never thought I'd see a Paper Mario reference
4:35
I just noticed the moving sound here is the same from Kirbys Epic Yarn
In many Mario related games, there are hidden "Super Mario" theme music. From the sub-zone in Mario 2, the Special Zone in Super Mario World, even in Luigi's Mansion. Can you compose a list of all of them?
That's crazy
Some of these are HUGE stretches.
Theres a game named Geist that is for the gamecube that had a helmet of the powersuit of samus in a locker
just realised how much the Samus Yoshi looks like the 2nd form of the SA-X
Samus sleeping and her ship in dkcr are the best two
Surprised to see 7 minutes of footage
Someones prob said it, but those were actually stickers from any wii game, all of those games, including corruption, were within 1st year release of the wii
Is it safe to assume that as long as they show up to smash than they are in the same universe? Maybe different times or places but it seems feasible, no?
I've just recently started playing Super Mario RPG (on the Wii VC), so does anyone know when Samus is available to see? And on that note, where does Link sleep as well?
Link sleeps at the Rose Town Inn, you have to spend the night there first and when Mario wakes up, he'll take up the second bed. But only after you clear Forest Maze.
Samus, you'll have to play a little farther. I can't remember when exactly, but I think you need four Star Pieces then head back to Mushroom Kingdom, but if you reached Nimbus Land, it'll be too late.
Okay, I take back what I said about finding Samus. You have to earn the Fifth star piece, not the Fourth. And you only visit her before you reach Land's End, not Nimbus Land. Sorry for the confusion.
Super Player Ryan Ok, cool! Thanks for you're help (and for also informing me on how to find Link).
Now wheres Nemo I have to find him
So many of these are a big stretch it's ridiculous lol
0:10 Ms. Aran's first ever dialogue
I don't know, a lot of these are stretch, especially the dkc ones.
i didnt even realize the sound effect one aince it wasn't pointed out, and I have no idea what nightmare from Metroid fusion looks like.
2:38 i thought you were gonna show the one in metroid prime 2 in sanctuary fortress, where you need to solve a puzzle while being in a morph ball, i dont see why this is a reference when the portals look way different
The power grip first appear on metroid zero mision in 2004 and m&L super star saga is from 2003 so yeah
How do you unlock the stickers on the Gunship btw?
Mario stickers can be unlocked
Only in metroid prime trilogy (for Wii)
(Ok I was wrong you can actually get those stickers from the original Metroid prime 3 I was wrong)
Samus in super Mario RPG, cool. 😆
Alexandros Baker
I knew that, but thanks for the attention.
@2:33 is the Gyro from metroid prime 2 in the sanctuary fortress, not the portal.
1:03
Ooh, I love threasures.
4:18 did anybody realize that's the item collect song from zero mission?/ fusion
The Mii In Mario cart was in the MP Big Blue From F-zero
What was the name of the game at the end of the video?
2:59 if it wasn't for the nouse, that plane looks like a P-40 of the flying tigers (it has the camo and even what resemble de nacionalist blue sun in theire wings)
Hey, in the Super Metroid thing the theme heard is...
...a Mario underground remix!
Resemblances are references, but direct appearances of objects, characters, and names are Cameos.
cool
You missed obvious similarities in DKR: Furious fire is a lower norfair remix, while the music at the begining of 5-1 is(I think!) a phazon mine remix.
You missed the underwater Metroid Easter egg in DKC Tropical Freeze
Crocomire's death is the NEW Dry Bones shatter sound from Super Mario World, not the old one (Super Mario Bros. 3)
Samus got a small reference in the mario movie:)
A few of these are A MASSIVE stretch
Man, how did I never notice that in super Mario RPG?
dead space is a mature version of metroid prime, just 3d, tho metroid still takes the cake
You forgot the Screw Attack as a treasure in The Great Cave Offensive (Kirby Super Star)
Edit: Missed the part where it says Mario games
It's official. Any studio that has made a few Metroid games can't stop referencing it in their other games.
Yea there are so many THEASURES in Warioland 2
Theres an entire board in kirby dreamland 3 dedicsted to freezing metroids to help samus
I also believe theres references to it in kirby superstar in the 'great cavern' or whatever the collect game is
Bob cares Great Cave Offensive?
Mr. Anonymous nope, kirbys dreamland 3 :)
Bob cares The cavern minigame in Super Star is called The Great Cave Offensive
Mr. Anonymous i own all kirby games pre 1998. Great cave offensive i dont remeber metroids, i do love the rpg boss fight, and the ultra racist looking big lipped tribesman is a great battle too.
Bur no im reffering to dreamland 3, like world 4 you need to have freeze so u can freeze the metroids, then at the end a cartoony unmasked samus gives u the rainbow thingy
Bob cares "I also believe there's references to it in kirby superstar in the 'great cavern' or whatever the collect minigame is."
THAT COLLECT MINIGAME IS THE GREAT CAVE OFFENSIVE, so you WERE talking about it.
6:21 Now that's a reference!
