Hacking a Hotel POS Tablet - How Hard Could It Be?

  • A lot of dedicated sales hardware (POS, or Point of Sale) is made from standard consumer tech. Clem encountered a (former) hotel tablet on sale, and wondered if it could easily be repurposed for general Android tablet use. Without a normal USB port, he has to sniff the proprietary connector with an oscilloscope, perform a factory reset, and even break open the tablet to verify its pinout bit.ly/3bhB8Cb
Will it boot into a usable version of Android, or is it indeed custom locked-down hardware? Share your hacking adventures on the element14 Community! bit.ly/3bhB8Cb

ROFL.. when I saw 'POS', I thought you were calling a hotel's room tablet a piece of sh#$.. Did not expect it to be a Point of Sale system.

You could try to use ADB while the device is booted in safe mode

everybody has to start somewhere, and I'm not an expert in ancase of such devices, so its fair to say that what I experience would be typical for the most people trying this.
An expert might have abetter shot, but I like to stick more with Hardware than software...

Once you had USB figured out, you could have restored it using ADB by connecting it to a windows or linux workstation. You’d need to find a vanilla image that’s compatible with it.

No activity on the USB ports visible e. I think there must be some code activation or do in the software before it even gets active at all.

I tried the pressing android version rapidly on my phone and got some weird P animation that changes colors when you turn the screen. doesn't seem to take any input or anything. I took a few screenshots and a video.

It's likely a little puzzle you need to solve to get zo the game, they got more complicated from version to version.

@@MAYERMAKES It doesnt seem to respond to touch input. It animates on it's own and the only way to change colors on it is to turn my phone horizontally like I'm watching CZcams. If I pinch with two fingers like I'm viewing google maps the P zooms in and out.

Android Pie has that psychedelic P easter egg in it, I couldn't figure out what it was about -- maybe a Google search would be of use?

That's the problem with PoS systems ... They are hardwired with custom software that blocks everything they don't use ... Then, since this is a disposable model that requires a input device to access parts of the memory, the only thing you can actually do is just take the battery and save some things. Like you said, it's mostly e-waste at this point. They are cheap to build and customize to the client need ... Since this was going to be a desk unit, they put the bare minimum to work effectively. Just some ram, wifi antennas, a custom chip, screen, battery, that's it. Nothing more. It's a dumb device, made with cheap parts and just for that one usage. They are not buying ipads for you to see all the amazing services they have. It's just a presentation screen ...

I think it's not as bareb9nes as it could be, but certainly built down zo a price and very custom.

@@MAYERMAKES Not really, legally the manufacturer should give you the sdk used to build the os, otherwise there should be ones floating around on the internet for the soc but the work needed is kinda wasted for such a device
