This song came out and was on the radio constantly when our son was stillborn. While recovering from the surgery I needed I cried so many tears to this song. Now my husband is with our baby boy in heaven.

This song always got me in the heart but now so even more. I was helping to raise my grandson (my sons son) he died in January of this year at the age of 12. Ryan was his only child and the only grandchild. Grieving is a daily struggle. Even now 9 months later we still bounce from denial to bargaining to trade places with him. I'd give my life for his. No one should know the pain of losing a child. Parents aren't supposed to outlive their children. I don't know if there is anything more devastating then burying your child. Bless all parents who have gone through this and somehow manage to get up every day. 🙏

The video is scenes from the movie Rush which this song was part of the soundtrack.
It's one time that I think the video distracts from song's meaning for those that don't understand it's origin. 😢
    A great reaction.

Writing. On 20 March 1991, Clapton's 4-year-old son Conor, whom he had with Lory Del Santo, died after falling from the 53rd-floor window of a New York City apartment belonging to a friend of Conor's mother. After isolating himself for a period, Clapton began working again, writing music for the film Rush (1991).

The movie the video scenes are taken from is called "Rush".
It's a tale of a seasoned police detective and a rookie cop
who are paired up to go into deep undercover to infiltrate
a heroin ring. They fall in love as they both become addicted
to heroin. It's a movie as sad as the actual story behind the song.

I was actually listening to an Anthony Jeselnik bit about this song/tragedy on my way home from work today. Probably the most vicious Jeselnik bit of them all. So ruthless. I love Anthony, and I understand that you can joke about anything, but if this happened to me/my kid, and someone made fun of it…. Can’t say I wouldn’t wanna murder them.

the 'movie clips' are from a film titled "RUSH" (1991, not 2013)... about two undercover narcs trying to bust a big dealer (played by Gregg Allman), and what it takes to do so... becoming heroin addicts, falsifying evidence, etc... point being, the clips have nothing to do with the meaning of the song... they're just there because he did the musical score for the film, and the song, or, parts of it, appeared twice in the movie. VERY worth a watch.👍🏼✌🏼🇨🇦

When I first heard this, I had no idea what had happened. I just knew it was a really great slow, sad song. When I found out the reason for these lyrics later, obviously that changed the way I listened to it.
I was not a parent when the song came out and I still was not a parent when I found out what it was about. I am one now and this song is SO different to me from the first few times I listened. What a game-changer some perspective can be! Nothing like parenthood to change the entire outlook of the world.
I literally cannot imagine, and of course I don't want to be able to imagine, that kind of pain.
How was this marketable? Whose idea was it to put this over the airwaves? Somebody had to be really hardcore soulless or cold-hearted in order to get him to record this, just so they could make money...

Hello there the part as u mentioned when Eric said I Dont Belong Here In Heavon is the fathers guilt that he was not there for his son to protect him on what had happened and he showed up after the fact and the guilt of WHAT if I showed up an hour before moment So the guilt he felt for not being there drowned him out.

Some random trivia. This song was released when the movie "Rush" came out. I remember it well because II worked at a Blockbuster Video when the movie came out. The movie Rush doesn't have anything to do with the song, though. I used to listen to this song frequently, we actually played the Clapton concert video in the store a lot.

EC wrote another song about his son's death. Circus because the last time EC saw Connor he took him to the circus. I think it expresses his hurt even better. czcams.com/video/veGF9Vjo_IE/video.html
Little man with his eyes on fire and his smile so bright
In his hands are the toys you gave to fill his heart with delight
And in the ring stands a circus clown holding up a knife
What you see and what you will hear
Will last you for the rest of your life
And it's sad, so sad, there ain't no easy way 'round
And it's sad, so sad, all you friends gather 'round
    'Cause the circus left town
Little man with his heart so pure and his love so fine
Stick with me and I'll ride with you till the end of the line
Hold my hand and I'll walk with you through the darkest night
When I smile I'll be thinkin' of you
And every thing will be all right
And it's sad, so sad, there ain't no easy way 'round
And it's sad, so sad, all you friends gather 'round
    'Cause the circus left town
And it's sad, so sad, there ain't no easy way 'round
And it's sad, so sad, all you friends gather 'round
    'Cause the circus left town

I have no idea how one survives that loss.
Just the thought of it gives me so much emotional anxiety.
People obviously have and do deal with that type of tragedy but it’s beyond my comprehension.
I wonder if he really is a religious person who believes they’ll be reunited in some sort of afterlife?
Sometimes I find myself wishing I had that crutch to fall back on and not have to be 100% certain it’s untrue.
