Happy Earth Day! This is my honest opinion about selling on thredUP, the non-sponsored pros and cons of it all : ) Whether you end up using thredUP or not, it's always good to think of ways we can give new life to the things we have that are no longer serving us. Let me know in the comments how you're trying to practice sustainability. Every little action counts, because each person's little action adds up to the next person's, which means we're all changing the world for the better together!

I couldn't imagine giving ThredUp any clothing I cared to make any profit from. I give them what I would otherwise give to the Goodwill because they'll literally pay pennies for items they sell.

I got a bag to sell items to them. I probably sent them 50 things. They kept 18 out of the 50. It took 8 months for all the items to sell.... 8 months to get a whopping $14.00 profit. It's not worth it to sell to them. You won't get much off of luxury items either. Had a friend send them a used $800.00 handbag. They sold it for less than $200 and she got $50.

Thredup also takes clothing without compensating you, there’s a little disclaimer that they make very easily to miss when you request a bag: they will take “fast fashion” items, and sell them, but will not pay you for them because they claim they don’t make enough money off those type of pieces.
Which is ridiculous. They’ve also stolen clothing from me. I sent in a bag of clothing and requested return assurance and when I got my clothing back, their were about 10 items missing.
I will never sell with thredup again.

Hanger! One of the problems with ThredUp is if you send them a set --a sweater set, or a sheer dress that comes with a slip, or a skirt and blazer suit -they'll separate them and sell each piece, ruining the original concept of the piece. A blazer alone might sell, but the skirt won't, going into a bin and defeating their purpose. They also lose the belt that came with the piece even if you tie it on. In all, for nicer outfits, I think Poshmark or eBay, depending on the brand, offers that kind of control. Thanks for telling us what sold and what didn't.

The downside is how little you get per item. However, when I don't want to deal with selling on my own, it's at least a little bit of return rather than just donating. And I can use that towards new clothes. I've lost thirty pounds this year and I'm up to four boxes. They do take a long time to sort. They've emailed me saying there is a larger delay due to the volume they are receiving. If I have shoes/clothes that are a little more worn out, I'll just put those outside for whoever needs them (I live in Los Angeles).

Hanger!!!! I use Poshmark exclusively for years. I am mostly a buyer. There shipping prices are high. As a result it is hard to make money on quality items. Buyers want to always negotiate prices which I rarely do. The shipping process is easy. I would rather go with a consigner store. My clothes are all high end. I am retired all my clothes are in excellent shape and I would not dump them in a box. Appreciate your candor.

I sell on ebay and mercari. I source clothing, shoes and some hard goods from the goodwill outlet (pay by the pound). I lot of resellers on you tube have mentioned sending clothes to thred up. I decided to try it to get more profit out of my time spent sourcing. I find plenty of mall brands that look great and are good sizes but they do not resell well on ebay so I leave them behind. I have decided to buy some of the mall brands and send them into thred up. I have sent in two boxes already and I plan to send in 6 more for a total of 8. I decided on 8 since thred up says it takes 8 weeks to process a box. I guess I will know by September if sending clothes into thred up is worth the time and cost of goods. I used to redonate items that did not sell after 6 months to a year. Sending the items into thred up gives me a chance to recoup some of my money.

I have stopped buying from Thredup and absolutely won’t sell from them again.
    1) the $14.99 fee
    2) lack of control to set prices especially when they messed up, and low balled me. They tried to sell my $390 almost new handbag for $90 and pay me $60. 😤 luckily I was able to raise the price and was payout at $114.
