Kolohe Andino Hates Surfing

- A fine piece off marketing theatre two months back when the former world title contender Kolohe Andino stunned surf fans with a profanity laden screed on Instagram.
“Surfing culture, big time surf brands and the ‘surf lifestyle’ are FUCKING dead,” wrote the thirty-year-old Daddy of two. “You got every FUCKING up and coming kid thinking they are one of the Paul brothers. Trying to gain cloud in any way, shape or form, with no gumption, no backbone, or no idea. These kids are not leaders, they are followers.”
It was a pointer to his and his San Clemente pals’ clothing venture 2 Percent, which offers hats, hoodies, jackets etc designed in a nineties homegrown style.
BeachGrit has always held Kolohe Andino close to our hearts. I knew his daddy Dino during his wild nineties epoch and first met the boy prodigy, then sixteen, on a holiday to the Canary Islands where his aerial flavours were enjoyed.
A perfect fit for the show "Chas Smith Hates Surfing" to discuss life off tour, the rise of the San Clemente squad, Griff, Cole, Crosby, Kade, at the expense of the Brazilian Storm, being a daddy and the essential nature of teaching your kid to surf with style and the death of the old school surf industry.
“Chas hates surfing less than me,” Kolohe wrote during our preliminary discussions.
Footage from Kolohe's movie Reckless Isolation, a couple of 2 Percent vids, a promo for Target and some excellent recent clips from the El Salvador Pro starring Griffin Colapinto.
Essential.

I think he is just market his brand as the exact opposite of what he is known for. he was never core or rock n roll. Kolohe was always the Nike, Target private school kind of pro surfer. I feel like he´s going through an edgy phase that he didn't have as a teenager but I don't buy it. And that's although I really share the criticism of big sub brands. Dane Reynolds and Former are much more authentic to me..
Surfing is a nightmare because of surf schools and the corporations
So you hate capitalism and free markets.
this is true
@@brockjones.shaper True of some, not of all. What hurt surfing most are the cams and social media. But what shattered the ability to effectively regulate lineups more than anything were the idiots (mostly the Luanda guys) who took things waaaay too far, forcing the courts to get involved and pass surf rage legislation.
It’s always the same story: a handful of jackasses ruining everything for everyone else.
As for surf schools, they’re not regulated and have no process for vetting their efficacy. I’ve worked for several and some do a great job while others DGAF about teaching etiquette and proper knowledge of the sport and lifestyle.
Codified systems are essential as are effective regulations and the proper enforcement of them.
@@theELEMENTSSurFit I hate capitalism and freemarketeers.
@@RCharlyDylan what’s solution? Da hui?
Getting on tour, falling off and then hating surfing is such a cliche. It's been done a million times already.
He actually says he doesn’t hate surfing at all
I watched this and thought "hell yeah".
Hell yeah
I just bought $14.99 sandels at Costco with Hurley stamped on them.
Kolohe was surfing really f&@king good in Australia this year. I didn’t understand the scoring on some of his waves? The scores felt low for how surgically he was attacking it. Would love to see him back on tour. His level in the heats and clips I’ve seen lately seem totally worthy of a spot on tour.
im starting a company called 6%
three times better than 2%

Nobody cares about San Clemente outside of San Clemente.
Which helps to explain why half of Southern California surfs the joint all the time😏
😂 someone sounds salty. San Clemente is arguably at the center of the surf world right now with the most talent coming out of there
@@JJMcCubbing I don’t know about the most talent. They just get most of the attention because the industry is on their backyard.
@@shacktime their whole crew just dominated the CS and like 4 or 5 of them got onto the CT 😂 name a city that did better this year
@@JJMcCubbing Hysterical that you think all the best surfers compete. Dane Reynolds is still one of the two best surfers alive today. And Eithan? Mickey Clarke? Bobby? You need to get out of your little internet bubble.
I’ve been living and surfing all up and down the California coast for four decades and I’ve seen underground talent no one’s ever heard of that’s as good as anything coming out of S’Clemente.
Industry like any other really is about who, when, and where, so much undiscovered talent everywhere because the industry wants to keep their circle tight. So anyone with talent really gotta grind outside of surfing just to get on, too many bs politics.
"Pro" surfing is the lamest and I hope Brother pursues his stated interests here, rather than chasing the "who can do the best flippity-dippity at Trestles" trophy. The Olympics at Chopes is kinda cool but not sure the LA-based version in 2028 will have a "real" venue. HB pier, cobblestone crumble, T-street....? Take em to Mav's and let's see Gabby on his 5'4 out there!!😂 Long live Dino, Archy and Christian. When surfing was real and hardcore....
Great watch, Brother what an Inspiring young man. Dino is a rad human. Hope to see Kolohe in the Olympics in 28’.
Kolohe as a grom reminds me of Kalani Robb how back in the days he was a super grom sandwiched between different generations of the best pro surfers there could be on earth older and younger then them.
Griffins second air on the wave from the first clip they showed was fucking insane. Big ups to him and mayhem for that one -invisible roller coaster tracks in the air that was one where it all just came together should’ve been a ten. And then you have one of the gnarliest airs that nobody talks about from kolohe at the intro.
You literally copied Rich Piana 5% name. Which was a body building company. Logo Looks so similar as well
Surfing is better without a surfing industry. The people who are upset about the industry dying are upset because that industry supported the notion that surfing is inherently cool and feeds the egos of those who do it (and the pocket books of a very lucky few). If your truly love surfing you’ll do it regardless of industry or image. Personally I hope the image of surfing gets less cool and less people take it up.
Surfing doesn't need any industry. Industry needs surfing, but they never gonna own any of it.
Nothing changes. Things just come and go. There will always will be those kids coming from nothing wanting it all.

growing up is fun 😂 good luck on the tour 🤙🏽😎🖤🕺🏄🏽♂️
Ive heard that the 2% crew sucks eachother off. Not that theres anything wrong with that. If thats what your into
You know it’s perfectly okay to not share all of your freaky fantasies with the world, right?
😂
I get the impression you’re projecting a fantasy of yours onto them😏
I actually really heard it from a reputable source. And most the boys know about it but dont talk about it. Just waiting to see when it will come out in the open
@@jamesthompson321 Wow. You really have a hard on for these dudes, eh?
Kolohe is going through his "Dane" phase. 🤣
Is that what they call guys who get off of cst and then don’t have to act fake anymore and surf for fun…
Love watching this guy surf.
My kids rock my quick button up shirts from 89' that are still tough
i like brother more and more these days. chas who makes those pants/sweater combo? i like the colors and i want em.
Brother is a treasure! And, pants Standard Issue, sweater Bassike!
Mount that microphone on a long stick, like wheel of fortune
Sounding like sour grapes. Happens to surfers who dont succeed on the tour, like they had wished. Bobby Martinez for example. Love my Cali brothers, but you need to toughen up. No excuses. Pin your ears back, and get after it. Mental toughness. Let the chips fall where they fall.
Dood, Bobby’s been doing just fine sans the tour and any media hype. Guy doesn’t even bother with socials because he doesn’t need to.
@@shacktime Duude....I'm happy Bobby is happy and doing well. I'm talking about the tour. How did he do when the going got a little tough on the tour ? He folded like a cheap suit, and flipped out. Life isn't easy. You have to stay mentally tough to survive, and that holds true on the tour. If Brother got back on the tour, I would pull for him 100%. He just needs to get back into it with a different state of mind to be successful. Just have fun with it, and let the chips fall where they fall. If he comes in with this easy going attitude, there is less pressure, and I bet he succeeds.
I can't get behind 2% as a brand if all he did was pick the name out of a hat, I need a origin story like we are 2% of the 100% that rock hard and ride free
Yeah its pretty lame. I thought it was inspired from the biker gangs 1% patch.
2% of the 100% that rock hard and ride free? What? Hahahah, that sounds like a tenacious D line
Yeah. I like Kolohe. Solid bloke. But the name just kinda goes “meh.” And I agree that having an interesting backstory is clutch for any brand, especially a lifestyle brand.
Not everything needs meaning. 2% is a sick name and the logo is cool
@@JJMcCubbing What makes it a sick name? And why 2?
Jesus time flies, kolohe 30 now
San Clemente got news for you ,,, you’re not core….
Neither are you🤷🏼♂️
Maybe you should brush up on your surf history. San Clemente goes way back with lots of core legends
Never made it
Big Kolohe fan here…
Rad duo,really fun
So a Former middle ranked pro who was way overpaid during the Glory Years, thinks 300k is a fair clip, decides to start a clothing brand, so one day he can pay someone 300k.Or to show these Corporate dogs,[ essentially the same guy's who wrote his Million dollar paychecks] how his many years on the gravy train have taught him that he knows best. After a few years of struggling, he realizes how hard it is to make money in the surf clothing game, unless you have very solid financial backing. Enter cashed up investor, arguments ensue between creatives/founder and investor when sales targets fall short, brand struggles- eventually folds. Former Pro sneaks back to his safe place. Finds someone else to blame. Maybe has to devise a way to earn a buck. Good Luck KA - Tough road if your looking for a payday
Bitter much? Companies like Patagonia set the standard and are doing great. Quik and Billy didn’t need to go public. No successful lifestyle brands need to.

I feel that
DUDE LIKE TOTALLY GNARLY BRO RADICAL
Surf brands have whored themselves out and sell at Ross and TJ Maxx. They aren't cool. That's exactly why everyone wants to start their own clothing company. It's a joke. Surfing was seen as cool in the aughts but surfing isn't cool anymore and there is no money in it now and never will be. If you want to get sponsored you have to be on the CT winning events. And TBH I don't know how the WSL can survive. Surfers are basically funding themsleves.
He’s going back to the …lost days with 2% I feel like
It’s his roots
He sounds like a goofball but you gotta love him
KA shows himself to be a grounded guy for sure; loving on his family, acknowleging the different paths for talented So Cal surfers, and his own love of just "paddling out" on anything/anywhere...
that said, I noticed CS starting to dream wistfully when KA started with the "shave my head, head tatoo, shave my eyebrows'" comments... DON"T DO IT, CS; ya KOOK! sad to hear 2% is just one of a list that seemed "cool"; but what's in a name... besides" marketablilty, revenue stream, public perception", etc; and all the other stuff that goes along with milking the modern "surf culture"... hence the frog..?!?
When the “GET IT RIGHT” shirt comes out..lmk..aloha
Excellent point about the corporate wash that seems to come in without a clue in the world and put their special cheese onto things. The company i work for follows the same operandi. They have just rolled out the rockstar policy for special achievements. There must be Elo clones everywhere.
This was so sick. He’s spot on about the industry. It’s just a skin suite of surf culture, a facsimile of more dynamic eras past. It’s so boring when compared to the 70’s - 2010’s, each of those eras were distinctly surfing and distinctly unique. They pushed the boundaries of fashion (some/most was terrible, but we love that!), music, culture and lifestyle. At best these days all we see are plain black tees with small inoffensive 90’s logo’s cheaply machine printed on, made in Bangladesh, edgy. This generation will have nothing to look back on, nothing to look back and laugh about or revel in and nothing iconic enough to become vintage in 20 years time. I’m not shitting on this generation, I worry for them. I am however pointing the finger at the chicken shit corporate overlords too scared to take any risk and invest in the surf culture of tomorrow.
Sure? This generation will remember 2% and Big Hammer!
Your beef is with capitalism, dood.
@@estebanlucas240 perhaps, time will tell
