    The KICKR 5 is Wahoo’s best bike trainer and one of the best trainers you can get at the moment. The ROLLR is also from wahoo but It’s a whole new different type of trainer. It’s not a direct drive trainer or wheel-on trainer. It’s basically a ROLLR with a fork stand. In this video, I will talk about the differences between these two trainers and the best use cases for each.

    I have the Snap but due to knee pain I'm looking at either throwing it on a rocker plate or switching to the Rollr. I've used a Rollr at my bike fitter for a short time but really enjoyed it. I also like the reduced wear on my tires. Thanks for the video!

    Great video. You hit all of the points of comparison. After fifteen years of using wheel-on trainers, I made the move to the Rollr. The first thing I noticed is that I'll no longer be able to 'phone in' a trainer ride. You know, those days when you just don't feel like a tough ride. Play Time is over. I have to up my indoor game, and I'm up for the challenge. I'll have to reset everything I've done in the past, but it will only make me stronger. I could not be happier with the Rollr.

    Great comparison! I bought a Rollr and it works great with my Garmin Rally pedals. I don't do massive sprints out of the saddle so don't have issues with the rear wheel losing contact, just a casual indoor rider, and I couldn't be happier with it! And although heavy, it is actually reasonably portable (I move it to and from the lounge room / pain cave depending on whether the wife is home and I want better indoor scenery)

    As a new subscriber I'm really digging your videos. The amount of detail you put into them for my taste and delivery is just right. I suffered a spinal cord injury some time ago and am easing back into cycling (keeping in mind I need to keep things simple and on a budget). I have purchased the ROLLR (with their powerlink pedals) for ease of indoor/outdoor training without taking wheels off etc. I plan on using Zwift since I'm and avid gamer I feel this will keep me interested in indoor training (achievements/experience..etc). My question is will I be able to complete most all rides/routes (and achievements) in Zwift with the ROLLR? Overtime one of those would be the tron bike (over a long time) but with the reduced degree of resistance I'm not sure if that would work or how that works? Thoughts and please keep up the great content!

    Ray, my wife is a 60+ year old C grade daily Zwifter who does mainly TTT and Rosa rides with her Evo team on a Kikr bike. We travel quite a bit and the smart bike is far too heavy and bulky to attempt to take with us. I’d like to get her one of these Rollrs as it can quickly and compactly come apart for travel. Her carbon road bike has a SRAM Force drivetrain with inbuilt pedal power meter and carbon wheels. Would you see this as the ideal option or is there some other brand/model you’d recommend for ease of travel and setup? Thanks, always appreciate your reviews.

    I’m curious how you set up Trainer Road with the ROLLR. If you are using a pedal based power meter are you still using power match? I like the idea of the trainer not measuring the power and instead using the power meter. I wouldn’t mind seeing this added to the next version of the KICKR Bike. My biggest concern with the ROLLR would be using my good tires and wheels on it. I currently have my outdoor wheels set up tubeless and would be hesitant to be wearing them out on the ROLLR. Therefore I’d probably end up switching my wheel for indoor training anyway negating the speed of set up advantage of the ROLLR.
    Great video!

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  Před 2 lety +1

      The ROLLR connects to your pedal based power meter and all you just need to do is connect the ROLLR itself to TR. No need to connect your pedals to TR.
      the kickr bike has a similar function. In the Wahoo app, you should see power match feature. Turn it on and enter your power meter ant+ id.

    Arrived as expected with all parts intact, also included two hex keys for assembly. czcams.com/users/postUgkxwOUUBdw8-88Iu4QnQS7q6b2NwZkHiYVl Had to adjust mine slightly to fit my bike, this was easy enough with instructions. I bought it to train with my track bike and found it to have resistance similar to climbing a slight gradient. Takes a while to learn to balance but there is plenty of guidance to help on the internet. Edit: There was more resistance at lower speeds because of the number of contact points but at higher speeds it is much easier as you don’t have to contend with drag.

    Training indoors on my home trainer feels - and is - way more difficult than outdoors. When Winter begins, I HAVE to lower the power target for my intervals by maybe 20W or even 30W, else I won't be able to finish the workouts I was able to do outdoors. I read, here and there, that as the direct-drive trainers are less "mobile", it could be a reason why training is harder on them.
    My question is: do you feel any difference on your efforts between riding on a direct-drive trainer, vs on the rollers (I'm not talking about your general comfort, but about the difficulty doing your workouts) ?

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  Před 2 lety

      I do notice watts come a little easier on rollers. Everyone is different though and I think the more you ride indoors the less delta you will have between outdoor and indoors.

    • @jimjamthebananaman1
      @jimjamthebananaman1 Před 2 lety +3

      It’s to do with heat: when training outdoors the cool air/wind cools you down which lowers your core temperature and therefore your heart rate is lower. Indoor training causes a massive increase in body temperature which increases heart rate which makes it feel harder than being outdoors. Also with being indoors you are constantly pedalling, opposed to cycling outdoors you can ‘coast’ downhills, along flats etc to give you a small break.

    • @GoustiFruit
      @GoustiFruit Před 2 lety

      @@jimjamthebananaman1 I'm not convinced. First, during the Winter, I train with a powerful fan, and I open the window, the external temperature can get very low (so frisky that, in fact, I only enable the fan and open the window several minutes after I started my warm-up); and I (used to) train with an app that was simulating the slope I was riding, so I had climbs and descents where I could stop pedaling if needed. And second, I'm riding outdoors when the weather is nice enough: during the early Spring, I wear additional layers, so I'm less affected by the cool air; and nowadays, as the Summer is coming, the temperatures can be much higher (15-20°C, and even more) than those I get inside during the Winter; and climbing a steep slope when the sun is beating down and there is no wind, you don't benefit of any "cool air" ! Yet, I think that I would still do better than indoors.

      I’m assuming you are traveling by car as this would be difficult to take on plane. But if you are looking for an option to use with Zwift, this is a great option and should work with her power meter nicely. A wheel-on trainer might also be something to consider like the KICKR Snap as it might be easier to fold and carry when traveling but not as easy to setup the bike on as the ROLLR. Finally, my name is Tariq not Ray :)
