I love Magical mystery tour as well, but to me it is not a real album. It`s more a compilation album where you have the "Magical mystery tour" EP on one side, and the a and b sides of the singles the Beatles released in 1967 on side two. "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry fields" are in my view Pepper songs... They would have been perfect on "Sgt. Pepper"

A very well explained ranking. Sometimes ranking albums isn’t so much what we cognitively perceive as the best album, but rather what album we tend to reach for most often. And that, in itself, changes with time.
I find myself reaching for the White Album and Let It Be lately.

Another enjoyable review, John. In response (horses for courses)....and not that you asked for one....I'm going to give you my rankings. To be honest, I've never thought about ranking them before now so this will be a first for me. I'm not going to include the "Yellow Submarine" album as I don't view it as a "legitimate" Beatles release (horses for courses again) So, here we go:
    12. "Beatles For Sale".........they were tired and sounded it, although there are some terrific McCartney tracks on the record.
    11. "Please, Please Me"......this one continues to grow on me. One hell of a debut album.
    10. "With The Beatles"....of course, it was "Meet The Beatles" over here but this was the record that made me fall in love with the
band. To my 14 year old eyes and ears, the sound was both extraordinary and revolutionary.
    9. "Let It Be"......this was a disappointment for me when it came out. Some terrific tracks for sure but just not enough of them.
    8. "A Hard Days Night"......a full album's worth of top notch pop/rock tracks. Terrific film, terrific album.
    7. "Magical Mystery Tour"......this one continues to grow on me as well. The soundtrack version is a waste of time but the "all
song" version is a showcase of the band's magnificent brilliance.
    6. "Help".....for me, this is the album which first showed the ever increasing maturity of their songwriting skills.
    5. "Rubber Soul".....my favorite George Harrison song of all...."If I Needed Someone"....is contained here which is one of a
number reasons why this record makes it to my top 5.
    4. "Sgt. Pepper".....it has all been said endless times before. Revolutionary brilliance in every musical sense. Timeless.
    3. "The White Album (The Beatles)"......pick any musical genre you'd like and you'll find it here. In a word, amazing.
    2. "Abbey Road"......what a way for the greatest band ever to say goodbye. I shed a tear each time the medley comes to an
end with that famous last verse. Vinyl magnificence!!!
    1. "Revolver"......not that it was needed, but this album proved they were greatest ever. From beginning to end, this is pop/rock
as it had never been heard nor recorded before. My copy, purchased in London, hangs on my den wall as proof.

Abbey Road is the best album the Beatles released. I love it. I think Phil Spector botched "Let it be" Compare George Martin`s version of the "Let it be" song to Phil Spector`s or George Martin`s version of "Get back" to Phil Spector`s... George Martin wins.. I am a little bit biased on Phil Spector... The man is in jail for committing murder, and i don`t like the way he treated Darlene Love on "He`s a rebel" where he put it out on a false name, even though it was Darlene Love who was singing.

    • @hu9204
      @hu9204 Před 7 lety

Get Back on the LP is the same version as the single. But I agree that he ruined Let It Be. He mixed out the backing vocals, which made the song any good in the first place! And he ruined Across The Universe my mixing out the other Beatles and adding his choirs.

Loved the vid! I like and share your passion, even though my list would be totally different - probably because I've become a different kind of Beatles fan - with Please Please as my number 1. It's one of the most energetic and energizing albums ever made, imho, and as close as we'd get to actually hearing the Beatles play live. Wonderful recording too; the sparks flying from the music are almost tangible. George Martin originally toyed with the idea of a "live at the Cavern" album, apparently? Now that would've been absolute gold, if at all feasable, but they did try to give us the next best thing with that first lp. It's electrifying and I never tire of it. Btw, some of my other faves are Live at the Star Club, and the Live at the BBC's, for pretty much the same reasons. That sheer power and togetherness gradually disappeared and got replaced with (albeit brilliant) production artifice. No wonder they didn't feel like performing their stuff anymore. When they quit being an actual band in 1966, Brian Epstein, who was so bowled over when he first saw them play at that "cellarful of noise", was also one of the first to realise that the dream was over, I guess? They still made great studio lp's together because they had immense talent, vision and tenacity, but that mysterious magic they all used to share was lost. Didn't Lennon say: "our best stuff was never recorded"? We know he was prone to exaggeration and, erm...contrariness, if that is an actual English word, but listening to their albums, that quote resonates with me, and I always felt he might be right. So, for me, PPM is my absolute favourite Beatles album and surely one of the best pop lp's ever made. Anyway, do excuse my longwinded comment. I enjoy your channel and it's great to share the same Beatle passion!

I love all the others. I include Yellow Submarine in that and George Martin's score.
Great to see Beatles for sale not too close to the bottom. The originals on that album are superb. And unpopular opinion but I love Mr Moonlight.
The best is so hard to say. Maybe cheating but I count the let it be naked version as I don't like the original. And that naked version makes it jump up my list. No fillers and Don't let me Down is added. Much better production. All the songs are very very good. I ain't saying my best but i do enjoy hearing people's views on this fascinating subject

They didn't have much input apart from the cameo at the end. The side 1 consisted of a Sgt Pepper reject (OANS), three other new songs by John Paul, and George recorded for contractual reasons, and two previously released singles. I don't think of it as a Beatles "album" as such, and neither was MMT which essentially was a double EP in the UK. Both were "soundtrack" releases. However I like the MMT EP as it is (apart from "Walrus" you don't get these tracks elsewhere), and I like listening to side 1 of YS, (these extra four tracks you don't get anywhere else either)……… and it is The Beatles :-)

Abbey Road has always edged it for me as it was the first Beatles album that I really listened to. I was listening to the Stone Roses, Nirvana and Jesus Jones (who?) and the like at the time. My dad was a Beatles fanatic and taped Abbey Road so I could listen to it on my Walkman. I gave it a few plays just to shut him up as he'd been nagging me to listen to The Beatles for years. Needless to say, I was a Beatles fan a few days later.

I have learnt to,love Let it be. The sound is so warm, it goes down like hot chocolate. Oh the Beatles were so good! Any of their albums could have been top of the list because each one has a gem which is absolutely « beyond compare ». Think of Eight days a week or the bridge of No reply. There is more musicality’in those than in the whole catalogue of any group you can think,of.

Abbey road will always be number one in my book, although white album and let it be often are tough competitors. Please keep making more videos. Everyone will have their own different opinion so I would not criticise and I largely agree with you. Abbey Road is my favourite but surprised that Revolver is so low , surprised that Let it Be is No 2 , I cannot see that album is better than your numbers 3,4.5 and 6 . I would have For Sale lower as well as that was a bit of a knocked off album a few great Lennon and McCartney songs but much of it is their old Cavern live act with covers. Most people would have Revolver at 1 or 2 as its considered their peak creatively. Always enjoy these ranking discussions , thanks for posting

You have a preference for 67-70 Blue era over the 62-66 Red era. I like both, but I prefer the originals from the earlier era more. Really, they are like two different bands from two different eras of music. The Beatles themselves caused much of that. The early Beatles members solo efforts are like a third era.

Thanks for helping me identify the version of let it be I have. 1970 UK is what I have with the greeny/ browny apple that looks badly printed. Nice album but I'm surprised is number 2 on your list because for me it's much lower. Although it has great songs on it, out just doesn't seem like an album to me, it seems cobbled together with not of an identity. Agree with you on your ranking of Let It Be. Never understood how an album with three number one songs could be so criticized by the so called critics. As you stated John and Paul’s vocals on Two of Us and I’ve Got a Feeling are superb. Across the Universe has always been one of John’s best but for some reason an underrated song (IMO). And for all of the criticism that Phil Spector got from Paul on The Long and Winding Road-I prefer the string arrangements for this song over the Naked version. I Me Mine has always been one of my George compilations.
The only complaint I have is that Don’t Let Me Down was not included on the original. And, yes, I understand Paul included it on the Naked version.

Great channel. Love seeing fans rank Beatles' albums. However...I must comment on most review ranking channels...yours included, about the exclusion of Past Master 1 and 2. I know, I know, they are not 'official' album releases. However...consider...just exactly what would be considered Beatles albums? The UK releases? The US releases? I only own UK released albums. I feel US record companies butchered The Beatles albums for profit. So I only purchase UK products. With that said...back when The Beatles were starting off, in that time period, it was not unusual to release singles and not include them on albums. It wasn't until the later Beatles years record companies stopped that practice. I believe the stopping of that practice was directly related to The Beatles. So, let me poiny out, there were many singles tracks that never made it onto an album. 'Rain', for example. One of Ringo's greatest drum performances. 'Day Tripper'. Even "Strawberry Fields Forever', and 'Penny Lane', (which should have been on Sgt Pepper), were not included on an album. Yes...I know they are on Magical Mystery Tour. But really...is MMT a true album, or just a compilation album? Truth is...when ranking Beatles albums only...one has to leave out a remarkabke amout of fantastic tracks, that eventually wound up on Past Masters 1 and 2. How can one truly rank The Beatles catalogue if these tracks are left out? I mean...really...are we ranking the albums? Or are wr ranking their catologue. I get it. If one chooses to just rank their albums...that is fine. Everyone is allowed to do as he or she chooses. But how does one determine exactly what a Beatles album really is? What about the US released Yesteday and Today? Does one include it? Many would claim...it is a legitimate album release. Just trying to make the point...it does no justice to exclude Past Master 1 and 2 out of the lineup. They are in fact...Beatles tracks. Not disrespecting anyone...just making a point. Hopefully my point is seen and some can agree. If not, fair enough. I just feel those singles tracks no respect, when The Beatles catalogue is ranked. Just my humble opinion. Forgive me for being so long winded. Just tryjng to get these singles some recognition. Thanks for your channel and review. Two thums up.

Even though AHDN is all original - a couple of Lennon songs on side 2 are poor IMO. And 2 of the side 1 songs irritate me a bit as well. I find a couple of the originals on "With The Beatles" are also second rate.

Interesting having Let It Be so high John but it does tend to get overlooked as an album and it's mostly terrific. I think because it has the throwaways Dig It and Maggie Mae it get's pushed down as low ranked but everything else is top notch. I would say that Two Of Us is the most overlooked classic, I think it's up there with the Beatles greatest songs.
I would agree completely that Abbey Road is the top Beatle album and that doesn't change ever for me, the other albums would rotate around in preference depending on my mood at the time of ranking.

I would have placed Let It Be near Magical Mystery Tour on your list and for many of the same reasons. Get Back and Let It Be were released as singles with the George Martin mix months before the album came out (and the album version of Get Back was the studio single edited and "faked" as the rooftop performance). Across the Universe had also been released on a charity album months earlier The other tracks would have made a great EP (and we can just trash Dig It and Maggie May). Don't Let Me Down wasn't included and there was plenty of running time available to include it (even though that already was released as the 'B' side of Get Back months earlier).
