Detecting meteorites with Leanne

Many of us find special rocks when we're out exploring. In this #STEMyourBoredom video the South Australian Museum's Manager of Education Leanne Wheaton talks about meteorites, which are rocks that fall to Earth from outer space, and helps us figure out if we've found one.
You will need:
- some rocks
- a surface such as a sandpit or a tray containing soil or sand
- some small balls, such golf balls or superballs, and/or some marbles
- a metre long ruler or stick to measure height, a smaller ruler or 'calipers'
- a squeegee to smooth the surface, or you can use your hand or a stick instead.

Hay guys wanna find some free and super cool space rocks and you live near Cottonwood, Arizona. Then get your water your magnet stick and grab your pooch and go to 1000 thousand trails just outside side of Cottonwood city limits along the Verde River, It is free area plus free overnight camping with or with out a motorhome or trailer! just respect the land and its wild life and enjoy caution certain time`s of the year can be thermally challenging so take lots of water and care.

I have some fully blàck, heavy, stones, magnetic,looks like meteorites. How to differentiate Laws/magnum. There are some melted iron balls in these. These balls have meteorites impressions.

Wow. So any meteorites found in Australia are automatically owned by the State? What about ones found on private property?? Wouldn't that specimen belong to the homeowner?

Hi Christopher, meteorites are deemed so rare and important that State legislation protects them, which means that any meteorite found in South Australia is the property of the Crown and must be lodged with the South Australian Museum. Thanks!

What an amazing way to impede science. If I found something there I wouldn't tell you or anyone with authority. Imagine how many stones have gone unlogged because of this oppressive "rule".
