  • Skull Buster Mountain Bike Trails - Would You Ride Something With a Name Like This?
On our way to our epic North Carolina MTB trip with friends, we decided to stop on the way and shake the legs out with a ride. Wow, did we get lucky and pick a great rail, well, actually, it was the only trail around! But it was so good, poisonous snake, teeter totter, and Seth Bike Hacks shows me how the Todder is really done.
Tires I used during the ride:

If you’re coming through KY again, stop off at the Berea bike park. It’s about 30ish miles south on I-75.

Also, and I could be very wrong but I think that was an Eastern Hognose Snake. If I’m wrong hopefully someone will correct me. If I am right, When threatened, the neck is flattened and the head is raised off the ground, not unlike a cobra. They also hiss and will strike, but they do not attempt to bite. The result can be likened to a high speed head-butt. If this threat display does not work to deter a would-be predator, a hognose snake will often roll onto its back and play dead, going so far as to emit a foul musk from its cloaca and let its tongue hang out of its mouth.

I think you are exactly right on that. This one was a little brighter than most when buffed!

I live just a few hundred yards and ride there on my gravel bike often. My favorite loop is the yellow, orange would be second. Stoked y’all got to check it out.

The county leased the land long-term for a future dam and reservoir project… Which seems to be on permanent hold… Luckily for us! And formally there was a slaughterhouse in the area known as skull buster because the cattle were cracked on the head with a sledgehammer at the start of the processing line :-)

Wow! Nice and pleasant! Trail was fun, glad the dam isn’t happening!

That was a harmless Eastern Hognose snake. Very dramatic, but harmless.

Found that out after I looked it up! Looked crazy, but you are right, harmless!

This is NOT private property. It was private property until about 20 years ago the county “seized” the land from some individuals (with payment under imminent domain type deal), and purchased from others without a fight. It was supposed to be a reservoir, and was approved by the army corps of engineers. Years later the army corps of engineers had a political change of heart, and was determined to shut down the reservoir project. I live a few miles away, and we have rode horses/off-road vehicles on it since it was acquired. I like that it’s open to everyone now, but the political discourse surrounding it has really bothered me.

Thanks, I am camping close to there this summer and I wanted to make sure it was the right place. I do my trail research mostly on CZcams😁

@@mtbtmmountainbiketrailmini4888 you’ll like it! Have fun, and keep doing your research on CZcams, I do the same if I haven’t already covered the trail myself.
