How Will EA Treat Codemasters?

  • With EA's recent acquisition of Codemasters, speculation has been everywhere: Many are wondering if Codemasters will be forced to use Frostbite, or if they'll help develop Need for Speed. In this video I wanted to debunk what I feel like are false claims and give my opinion on some potential things that could happen with this merge. Keep in mind that this video is purely educated guesses and speculation - anything can happen.

Why create a studio then bring it back to a studio that they broke up a while ago it didn't make sense or maybe it's just me 🤣 blackbox got over loaded with work then produced eh games from it so they got shut down. The point is EA Seems to have a habit of doing this stuff. Don't get me started on battlefront 2🤣 so overall I lost pretty much hope with EA actually doing something good in influence on their studios. I might be completely wrong yet but we'll see

I doubt Frostbite is much at fault here. The EGO Engine is a heavily modified version of the Phyre Engine which was a free-to-use engine developed by Sony so developers of any size could make games and it was mostly used for platformers and JRPG titles in the PS3 era, if an engine like that can be turned into what Codemasters used for years then I'm sure Frostbite can be used for a decent NFS game too. I still think most of the handling issues come from the fact that all Ghost titles have the NFS Rivals' handling under the hood albeit with a few tweaks.

@@aaronwestley3239 Not the most foolproof source in the world, but the Wikipedia page for the engine mentions the implementation of PhyreEngine's graphical features into the engine. You are indeed correct, it was Neon that was used as a base for Ego, I read that article a long time ago and switched their places by mistake, so my bad on that one.

The reason why is because frostbite is an engine that was designed for first person shooters only. When the engine is used for any other genre, it sucks. I think this is the reason why nfs has a huge handling problem.

I used to play BF games a lot on my outdated PC. For some reason Ghost Games removed console and didn't include some "engine specific" options in menus. It was a shame because writing them down manually in config file drastically improved performance.
    About Codemasters:
I hope they keep Grid alive and next game will be closer to the original one (higher speed, better damage model, more compliant and softer suspension, main focus on team management)
Dirt Rally will propably become official WRC game, I just hope they keep it on the sim side of simcade.
If they want to keep Dirt5 alive, they have to follow formula of original 3 games but I doubt there's big market for arcade rally games, as sport itself is in decline.
SMS should create simcade circuit games to rival Forza/GT on consoles. They can even base next title on PC3 (better camera, AI that doesn't try to emulate oval pack racing on road courses, utilisation of Madness engine's weather options etc.) and sell it as PC spinoff or Shift 3.

I think EA may not micro-transactions especially given that they are dealing with 3 lawsuits regarding microtransactions and the mess that was SW:BF2 and BFV I hope Criterion uses a different engine for the next NFS game imo the good looking games on frostbite were Rivals (one of my top 5 NFS games) and I hope Dirt and Grid don't die because from Dirt 1 to Grid 2 all games by Codemasters are amazing and better than the NFS of that time especially in 2007,2008,2009 and 2011 and the Ego engine looks really great.

The main reason these types of takeovers even happen, is all about resources. As Fox aquisition shown, Big studios both in games and movie industries, care about production abilities. Licences and franchises are sweet bonus, because IP is always valuable, but if it were about getting these, EA could have just apply for F1 license, instead of buying out whole codemasters. More games and ips, will be useful for EA pass service, to make it look much more interesting, and then there are many new devs, studios and technologies, that EA can use in a future.
About BioWare and anthem, just because BioWare said they werent forced, doesnt mean much. There are plenty of accounts from people Who worked with these engines on these games, that say otherwise. BioWare officials need to keep straight face, there's no going around it. No one will say 'Yea, use of frostbite was mandatory, and we hate this engine'.
If it goes about need for speed... Again, Fox aquisition comes to mind. Many speculated at the time, that Disney wanted to get back the X-Men license. And look, few Years have passed, and it is just now, that MCU announced first movie based on license from that aquisition. And it's not even X-Men. Time will tell, if codemasters will help with NFS development. Although, having more Diverse portfolio of racing games will be hugely beneficial for EA.

I think need for speed doesn't need to come out 2023. I think burnout can kind of solve their problems. If it's going to come back it need to be an closed track racing game. To separate its self from need for speed. No bikes. Burnout is about car combat.
This is coming from someone who played little heat and their last need for speed game is rivals, who play other game genres and is 16 years old.
