  • Transcutaneous Vagal Nerve Stimulation (TVNS) is a passive activation of the Vagus Nerve.
    TENS Unit: amzn.to/3geQd6G
    Ear Clip: amzn.to/3soCArx
    TVNS Instructions PDF: c18a153e-943b-4e92-ae68-35131...
    Useful Supplements: us.fullscript.com/protocols/f...
    Settings:
    Pulse width: 200 milliseconds
    Mode: Normal mode
    Pulse frequency: 30 Hz (Unless directed to do a rotating frequency)
    Intensity: To start, turn the dial up until you barely feel a sensation, then turn it down until you just barely don’t feel it. Leave it there. This is a “subthreshold” intensity.
    Duration: Begin with 12 minutes per day, two-three times per day. This could be paired just prior or post meals. Or, try morning and evening. If the tVNS is too activating, avoid evenings and only use in the morning or mid- day. Work up to 15-17 minute sessions.

    A little correction: The Vagus nerve (CN10)does not come from your midbrain. It comes from the Medula. If it has ramifications going to the auricular region I don't know. Stimulation of vagus nerve to improve digestion can't do much if people with constipation can't squat on the toiled to help properl food bolus downward, don't drink water and eat only meats and refined, processed grains such as white pasta, bread, etc...

    Hi there, would you say this can be at all similar to an effect of High Intensity Interval Training on the vagus nerve? I can’t really imagine how it would be since that is kinda it’s own thing but just wondering
    Edit: ahh Just watched the whole thing I guess not since it’s not involved in elevating heart rate. Would you know of any other device similar that might increase/raise heart rate and stimulate VN?

    Great video! Some studies on TVNS put the ear clips on the tragus as opposed to the concha to stimulate the vagus nerve. What are thoughts? C

    • @thefacilitydenver
      @thefacilitydenver  Před 2 lety +7

      Yes! We use both options, particularly if there is not enough surface area on the concha to fit the clip. Both options give benefit. Further, we have seen mild success with using a patch electrode just behind the left ear along the neck if a clip is not available.

    Do you have an idea of which method would be more effective - either doing the sessions in a calm relaxed state, or intentionally choosing to do the session amidst a more stressed and sympathetic state (to assist the body to return quicker to the parasympathetic state?)

    • @thefacilitydenver
      @thefacilitydenver  Před 2 lety +8

      Most often, we recommend using it in the calm state as a means of modulating the stress response. (Ie: prepare us to better deal with stressors) But, we have seen success in patients using it in that stressed time. Specifically, we had a patient use it DURING tense conversations with a partner.

      Hi Maurice, TENS has different uses beyond vagal nerve stimulation and has been used for muscle pain in the legs. I don't think that TVNS is the best application to improve your issue. If you are suggesting this is an onset of symptoms (inability to walk) since using the TENS, we recommend you reach out to a local doctor who can assess you.

    • @thefacilitydenver
      @thefacilitydenver  Před 2 lety +4

      I do not expect a quick increase in stimulation to cause physical damage to the vagus nerve. Some patients like a much higher stimulation than we recommend. Especially if you had the other settings in place. Our nervous system (and brain) can handle a surprising amount of insult!

      Yes! Improved vagal tone has impacts on cognitive function as it relates to brain inflammation, cortical firing, and restoring parasympathetic/sympathetic balance. "How Much" is a tough question, as that can be largely subjective. It's certainly a safe and useful technique to add on top of a nutrient-dense diet and mental health therapy.

    • @thefacilitydenver
      @thefacilitydenver  Před 2 lety +8

      You wouldn't want to stimulate BOTH ears, as the right ear has nerve pathways that may activate the heart. LEFT EAR ONLY! However, what you can do is clip the 'active' (usually the red wire) to the spot we show, and clip the 'inactive' lead (usually a black wire) to the left earlobe as a ground.

      We really recommend sticking to around 10-12 minutes per session. You can think of this similar to 'exercise' - there's definitely a point of overdoing it and negating the positive effect. TVNS can be particularly depleting of certain nutrients, so doing too much can tax your body of things like acetylcholine.
