This was me, an outcast that never fit in. Never thought I'd marry, or have kids, until I met my wife. She was the only woman that truly loved me, believed in me, and was worth having a child with. She died a few weeks ago, but we were happy for over 25 years. I'm a very lucky man....

Late husband died 7 1/2 years ago. 32 great years. Was 36 when we met, he was 47. He was divorced. Instant click that only got better each day. Sure we argued, never violence, just clearing the air from time to time. Both had serious illnesses, helped each other. Family illnesses both sides. Navigated together. Read each other’s minds. You walk in step, finish each other’s sentences, pass food on table even before being asked, 6th develops. Miss him every moment. Will miss to my last breath. Close to his kids & grandkids. Good rapport. Can’t ask for more.

The scene after Marty walks Clara home is the absolute best of the movie. When he slaps the bus stop sign you know he has just realized not only is he in love but that he will spend the rest of his life with her. And anything life throws at them, whether good or bad they will see it out together. It’s what I call “ a Marty moment “.
If a man is lucky enough he will have his Marty moment. You only get one in your life. And if a man is really lucky, I mean really LUCKY, he will be smart enough to realize it.
I had mine in 1985. Saw her getting off the bus at Mohawk College in Stoney Creek. Said to the guy standing beside me “ You see that girl, the one with the white blouse and glasses. I’m gonna marry her “. This September will be 30 years for us.

This scene resonates with me so much. I met a guy at a party; the nicest man I ever met. He was honest, he looked after others before he looked after himself, he was grounded, he offered help when he can, and saw the good in everyone. He wasn't the most attractive, but his traits made me fall for him. The family liked him but their issue? He was an atheist. They convinced me to break it off with him because he wasn't a man of God. I have respect for those who devoted to religion, but my family had experiences with Catholic husbands, devoted as they were, who cheated and physically abused my aunts and cousins. Realizing what I lost because of others' petty advice, I told them off, saying I don't care if he's an atheist, he's a great guy and I lost him because of a stupid reason?! No, I'm not gonna let that happen. My boyfriend and I got back together. We are now entering 6 years and the religion thing doesn't bother us. My family has learned to accept it because he is such a nice guy.
2024 Update! We’ve been together for 13 years and happy!

Interesting how Clara [Betsy Blair] is characterized as a dog. As if the guys making such judgements are the blue plate special. Betsy Blair may not be ravishing, but she is surely beautiful. She was married for many years to Gene Kelly, for cyring out loud. Now, in the original TV/Live Play version, where Rod Steiger played Marty, Nancy Marchand [who in her autumn years potrayed Livia Soprano] played Clara, who is more believable as a Plain Jane type. Be that as it may, the chemistry between Borgnine and Blair is so very touching. Something to be said for kindness as an enduring character of actual factual MEN.

I lost a girl because of immaturity and letting my Mother have to much control. My Mother always had to be in control and today, 35 years later it still bothers me and the “ what if “. At 57 I have a great wife and two strong and independent adult children. But I still think of that girl. I use to feel bad, thinking that wasn’t fair to my wife and maybe it isn’t. But knowing I let an outside influence play a part in ending a relationship, still eats at me. I’m still bitter about getting mixed up in my parents problems and letting my Mother have to much control of my life.

The first time i saw that film it was on late night cable. I was in tears halfway through. It was as if rhe film was about me.
Hanging out at a club asking girls to dance onky to be turned down and to hear their snide remarks about my clothes and more.
Then meeting up with my loser friends who wasn't having a god time at one club and wants to drive to the other side of town to try another club.
Then 1am rolls around and either we've met someone and the other guys think she's a dog or we've met someone and we took too long to make a move they're with someone else because they moved faster.
Then eventually we leave right before closing time so we can have breakfast somewhere; Whataburger, IHOP, Denny's or another dive that promises heartburn.
Then back home smelling like an ashtray. I take my clothes off in the garage and get them into rje wash so i dont stink up my house or piss off my dog cause she doesn't like nasty ashtrays either.
The next day by 1pm i am getting phone calls aking if im going to the bars that night.
Then i think of Marty. Im gonna stay home and watch a movie. I dont eant to be hassled by girls who go to clubs not to dance but to hang out.
So i stay home but continue to get calls of rhr guys asking me to meet them in or pick them up.
This film is about me an all my buddies. The heart breaks and heart aches.
My mother asking me weekly when am i going to get married. When will i hive her grand kids. That drove me as crazy as it did Marty.
After the film ended. I gave up gpinf to the clubs and dance halls for a few months. I found other ways to pass the time. Id go to the gun range, meet friends for dinner. If they wanted to go to clubs I'd excuse myself and go home.
After the months i went back to rhe club and danced all night. The nexr night i stayed home. That's how it was. I would fo to clubs so randomly that i was down to one or two nights a month from 12 nights a month.
Marty taught me a leason. I dont cry when i see that film but i wonder about the current and future generations of Marty and what theyll deal with.
